Dear Fellowship Member:
"So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory
from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the
Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him."–Isa. 59:19.
Words fail me to
express my deep appreciation for your prayers and cooperation in this great
ministry, seeking to alert the world as to the imminent danger of atheistic
Communism. God has been using our executive director, Dr. Fred Schwarz, in a
most wonderful way as he gladly and unselfishly gives his best to this
ministry. Dr. Schwarz has left his beloved family in Australia, and we would
appreciate your prayers for them for physical protection, spiritual welfare,
and for their financial needs. May we count on you to join with us in
stemming the tide of this wicked, malignant disease, and permit the Holy
Spirit to raise up a standard against it? We need your financial support so
we can carry out our fixed policy–"pay as we go."
Our field
representative, Helen Wood Birnie, is doing an excellent work, and we would
appreciate your prayers for her physical, spiritual and financial needs, and
also for her family as they also pay the price of having her in the field.
May we have the
pleasure of having a letter from you this month, assuring us of your prayers
and your support? Remember, "When the enemy comes in like a flood, the
Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him."–Isa. 59:19.
And then let us remember Rom. 8:31: "If God be for us, who can be
against us?"
How thankful we are
that God is still on the throne, and that He has appointed His beloved Son
to bring order out of international chaos. However, the Spirit of the Lord
works through consecrated men and women who are willing to pay the price of
yieldedness to the Lord. Thanking you again, I am
Yours in Him because of Calvary.

FRED C. SCHWARZ, M.D.
MANAGING DIRECTOR
Dear Member and Friend:
Time continually passes, and with the passing of time the Communist program
of world conquest continues according to schedule. It would be interesting
to take one of the news letters I sent out some time ago indicating the
over-all Communist program and compare it with the progress that has been
made. In it I indicated various major priorities for the Communists at this
time. Here were three of them: Firstly, to continue the advance in Asia.
Secondly, to isolate America from her allies, particularly Great Britain.
Thirdly, to undermine and silence, insofar as possible, those in America who
were endeavoring to expose the Communists and counteract their activities. A
moment’s consideration will show the tremendous success that the last few
months have brought for these Communist goals.
Most of Indo-China is
now in Communist hands. There is absolute chaos in the remaining portion and
its complete absorption by the Communists is now simply a matter of time.
The armies for the spontaneous revolutions in Laos, Thailand, Burma, and
other areas are already in process of training and formation in China. The
Asian advance goes according to schedule.
In addition, we have
seen tremendous success attend the Communist program to isolate America from
the good will of her allies, particularly Britain. We saw the visit to
Russia and Communist China of the leaders of the British Labor Party where
they underwent a conducted tour of a week or two and saw what was very
different from that of those missionaries who lived under the Communists for
a matter of years and saw in operation the system that the Communists put
into effect – a system so hideous and terrible that it staggers the mind.
We have also seen how
leading anti-Communists have been silenced. The investigation into Communist
activity by the McCarthy Committee has been effectively stopped. Many of the
other leading anti-Communists have been defeated in the recent election and
the Communist program enunciated months ago is attaining truly frightening
success.
On the credit account
we can report that the ministry of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade has
been attended with very special blessing. Sine the preceding news letter I
have visited the cities of Portland, Oregon; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and
Detroit, Michigan. In all these cities the response to the message has been
remarkable and many folk have been stirred to a realization of the peril of
the hour and to a dedication and determination to give their lives to combat
it. Various highlights from the different cities may be reported.
In Oakland, Portland
and Detroit, a series of lectures on "The Religion of Communism"
have been delivered to Bible schools and seminaries. I would like to pass on
to you some of the comments from the presidents of these institutions. Dr.
H. O. Van Gilder of the Western Baptist Bible College in Oakland writes:
"Dear Dr. Schwarz:
Your series of lectures on "The Religion of Communism," given
before our entire student body and faculty was not only extremely
interesting, but of inestimable value in preparing our students in dealing
intelligently with the various problems arising from Communist penetration
in the fields where they will minister. The lecture on "Communist
Conversion" was the cleverest exposition of dialectical materialism
that I have heard or read. I hope this series can soon be put into print
and I wish it were possible for you to deliver the lecture in person
before the students and faculty of every educational institution in the
country."
Dr. Earl S.
Kalland, president of the Western Conservative Baptist Theological Seminary
of Portland, Oregon, writes:
"Dear Dr. Schwarz:
May I commend you for the most informative series of lectures on Communism
which you delivered to overflow audiences at Western Seminary this past
week. Your grasp and presentation of the history, philosophy, program, and
activity of the Communists throughout the world left our students, faculty
and friends with a new realization of the desperate need for an informed,
dedicated Christianity to combat this evil revolution of our time. May you
have the widest possible hearing for your message everywhere. Every
student in our universities and colleges throughout this land should hear
your series of lectures on Communism. Every Christian college should make
it possible for you to present these lectures to their students as soon as
possible."
President
Roy L. Alldrich of the Detroit Bible Institute writes:
"Dear Dr. Schwarz:
Just a note to thank you again for your effective lectures on Communism
here in the Detroit Bible Institute. You gave the most stimulating picture
that I have ever known to be presented on this theme. I am sure that the
entire DBI family profited immensely, as did also the many visitors. My
conviction is that the information you possess should be much more widely
circulated. I trust that God will richly prosper the ministry of the
Christian Anti-Communism Crusade that you represent."
This is one
aspect of our ministry which merits the complete support of the Christian
public. The missionaries and missionary candidates have been utterly
unprepared to meet the agents of Communis when confronted with them on the
mission field, and it is imperative that such a program of training in the
mind, the purposes, and the practices of Communism should be incorporated in
every Bible school and seminary in the country. As our ministry progresses,
we expect that this will become a feature of it in every city that we visit
as God opens these doors more and more widely.
A vision that we have
had for some time was the possibility of a training school where ministers,
Bible students, and others could be trained in the ways of Communism that
they might go and teach others. It now seems that it is possible for such a
program to go into effect. At the moment we have tentatively planned two
such programs for next summer. One is in Portland, Oregon, under the
sponsorship of the Multnomah School of the Bible, and one is at Winona Lake,
where we are hoping to have the world-famous conference ground available for
a session of a week. We believe these would be tremendously popular.
Everywhere I go I am asked by an enormous variety of people how they can
become efficiently informed on the subject to speak about it effectively and
intelligently. Conferences of the type proposed would meet this need to a
great extent. We would covet the prayers and support of every Christian and
person of good will to render such sessions possible where interested people
may go more deeply into the philosophy and practical program of the
Communists and then intelligently go out to combat it and present the
Christian alternative of freedom.
The two weeks spent in
Minneapolis, Minnesota, were thrilling weeks. I had the privilege to be the
guest of the Rev. R. F. McIlnay, the beloved "Pastor Mack" of
Spiritual Clinic, each day on his radio program over KTIS. This provided a
background of interest and prayer for the meetings which we conducted many
times each day. Pastor Mack was as warmhearted and generous and cooperative
in every way as it was possible for anyone to be. Response from the radio
itself was remarkable and also the attendance at the meetings of the people
who had been informed about the respective subjects over the radio was
encouraging indeed. The Minneapolis campaign culminated in a Sunday
afternoon rally at Calvary Temple and it was indeed thrilling to see the
overflow crowd packed into this large auditorium fired with burning
intensity of interest and dedication.
Another feature of the
Minneapolis visit was the number of secular high schools addressed. It was
always a great experience addressing the assemblies of these high schools.
The auditoriums are large and packed. The young people are in the very prime
of their intellectual life. The interest with which they listen is always
apparent and the questions asked at the conclusion most penetrating. I spoke
at an assembly of Patrick Henry High School, to the Junior High students.
When I had completed the address, one small boy about twelve years of age
stood up and in an excited voice cried out, "Why haven’t we got our
books in Japan?" I had been indicating the extent to which the
Communists had flooded that country with their books. This question is the
burning one confronting everyone. It seems incredible that we should be so
foolish as to allow all literate Asia to read almost exclusively Communist
produced materials. The reason our books are not there at the highest
educational level is simply that we have falsely diagnosed the Communist
disease. We have a saying in the medical world, "It is better to have
the right operation done poorly, than the wrong operation done well."
If the diagnosis is wrong, the treatment is almost certain to be
ineffective. If the trouble rests in the appendix, the most expert removal
of the gall bladder by the greatest living surgeon is liable to produce very
little in the way of results. Our diagnosis of Communism has been a material
one. It has been interpreted as a movement of the poor, originating in
poverty. This diagnosis is false. Communism is a movement of scientific
intellects originating in godlessness and materialism and exploiting
poverty, and it must be met in the battlefield of the mind and the spirit
and not simply in the battlefield of the material. Until our diagnosis of
the Communist disease becomes accurate and widespread, the treatment will
continue to be ineffective as it is at the present time. The Christian
Anti-Communism Crusade can rejoice that books diagnosing Communism correctly
are now being published in these countries. We have received a copy of the
translation of my book, "The Heart, Mind and Soul of Communism"
into Korean. It is a matter of great thankfulness that we were able to send
many books to Japan, and we hope as time goes on to literally flood the
country, that every student in Japan may receive a copy to really discover
what Communism is instead of merely hearing its seductive voice as it woes
him with some local project which appears so desirable. We thank all those
whose contributions render possible our sending these books entirely free of
charge to both Korea and Japan, and we look forward to continued and
increased support that the flood of books to all the countries bordering the
Communist regime may be an increasing torrent so that we may reach the
student mind more and more. This is the desperately important mission of the
day and hour in which we live.
In Minneapolis I
preached on Sunday night in the Fourth Baptist Church, a well-known church
where the great Christian leader, Rev. Dick Clearwaters, is the pastor.
There I outlined as I often do the situation in China, where the children
were by compulsion attending mass executions as a portion of their
education. At the conclusion of the address, I was approached by a charming
couple who indicated that they had been missionaries in China under the
Communists for two years. They had been serving with the China Inland
Mission. Their names are Mr. and Mrs. Christiansen. In conversation they
confirmed every statement that I had made and amplified them with details
from their own experience. However, they told me the same sad story I have
heard in so many places. People were just not interested in hearing what had
taken place there. It disturbed them, it unsettled their enjoyment of the
privileges that surrounded them. As a consequence Mr. and Mrs. Christiansen
had practically given up speaking about it and warning people. We were
privileged to give them the opportunity to tell their experiences to many
people. I interviewed Mrs. Christiansen over KTIS radio with Pastor Mack and
responses simply flooded in. On the Sunday afternoon at the Christian
Anti-Communism Crusade Rally Mr. Christiansen stood to my right and Mrs.
Christiansen to my left while I questioned them for half an hour and with
transparent honesty they told what they had seen. Their actual experiences
are terrifying. They told how they would receive orders from the authorities
that they were not to leave their dwelling on the morrow. At an early hour
of the morning there would be a great commotion outside and the bands would
come down the street. Behind the bands would be a group of prisoners with
their hands tied behind their backs. Into the bonds a stick would be forced
and at the top of this stick there would be a placard indicating the crime
of which they were allegedly guilty. The whole population was out on the
street in apparently festive spirit and the school children were marching
and the mothers had to take their children in arms to watch the execution of
these prisoners. We were informed of how the mothers hated it. Many of them
would try to hide their children but if they were caught they were arrested
for counter-revolutionary activity. The Communists in every way incite the
children against their elders. They are given the job of searching their
elders on the streets, down to their most intimate clothing, as well as the
job of searching the business establishments for hidden money. They are
given guns and told to guard certain areas and challenge everyone who
passes, and if they do not reply to shoot them. The entire regime is
concentrating on creating out of the children the cold, scientifically
formed, materialistic executioners of the future in anticipation of the time
when they come for the liberation of America and the other free countries of
the world. May God forgive our blindness and unwillingness to face up to the
facts that are apparent to every thoughtful person of what is taking place
in these lands under Communist control.
The Crusade is on the
threshhold of great things for country and for God. Now, as never before, we
stand in need of the support of every Christian. This support should
primarily be prayer, but we also need sacrificial contributions and gifts.
One such sacrificial contribution reached me in Minneapolis. In an envelope
with this written on the outside a gift of $100 was received:
"Dear Sirs:
Enclosed is the $100 pledged last week. This is out of my earnings as a
nurses’ aid and a tithe has already been taken out. I had some saved
towards a Christian education for whichever grandchild wanted such an
education. Having eleven of them, we are trusting the Lord for what is
needed." –Mrs. H. W. R.
We trust
that many will be stirred by this example to contribute sacrificially as
this dear woman has done. Our ministry has now emerged from the probationary
period and has a wide scope reaching into every part of American life and
mission life throughout the world. We honestly believe that it merits the
support, on the widest possible basis, of Christian people. As the support
is given we can expand the range of the ministry. It is expanding all the
time, but not as rapidly as the Communist peril is expanding. We must do
more, and we ask those who receive this letter to honestly consider what
they should do. Please write in, either for life or annual membership or
with a sacrificial contribution towards this ministry of education,
evangelism and dedication in the hour of man’s greatest peril. May God
bless every one.
