To all
civilized people, however, and especially to Christians, these are crimes of
appalling magnitude and reveal Communism for the insanity of megalomania and
murder, which it is. All Christians have a responsibility to oppose every
aspect of its materialist philosophy and pragmatic program with every
resource of body, mind and spirit.
SEMANTIC SABOTAGE
"What’s in a name? That thing we call a
rose, by any other name would smell as sweet." Thus spoke Shakespeare.
Words are weapons in this war. Strange things happen to them. Their meanings
change without the realization of the vast majority of the people.
One word that has been
sabotaged is the word "liberal." To many people it means
"generous." It evokes positive emotions. Yet, when used in
politics and religion its meaning has been changed. It has become the symbol
of the tyranny of centralized power and a religious intolerance.
I was scheduled to
speak to the students of a State College at their Religious Emphasis week. I
received the following letter:
"First Methodist Church
"Dear Dr. Schwarz:
"I regret to inform you that we find it necessary to cancel your
visit with us, Nov. 3-5, 1958.
"After a
thorough study of your materials by the members of our group we have come
to the conclusion that while you show an excellent grasp of Communism and
its program, your message is not sufficiently grounded in the spiritual
strengths of liberal Christianity to justify its presentation as a
Religious Emphasis Week program.
"This misgiving
amongst our own staff is making it exceedingly difficult to raise monies
sufficient to underwrite your visit. Rather than place both of us in the
embarrassing position of not knowing whether you will be reimbursed, we
feel it best that we cancel your visit now, in time for you to make other
arrangements on these dates.
"Sincerely,"
I replied
as follows:
"Dear Mr. ___:
"I thank you sincerely for the frankness with which you gave the
reasons for the cancellation of my appearance as a speaker at the
Religious Emphasis Week of ----- State College.
"I regret that
this action has been taken but I cannot say I am surprised as I have had
previous experience of the illiberality of the so called liberals in
religious as well as other realms.
"It is true that
I lack faith in the spiritual strength of Liberal Christianity. It is also
true that my faith in the spiritual strength of Conservative Christianity
is unbounded. It would appear to be the very essence of a true liberal
outlook to allow the alternate viewpoint to be expressed. However, bigotry
assumes strange garments.
"I trust you
will appreciate the spirit in which this is written. Rest assured of my
continued Christian love and dedication to the struggle for freedom.
"Yours very sincerely,
Fred C. Schwarz"
Further
comment is superfluous.
The colleges and
universities continue as one of the great battlefields between the
ideologies of freedom and slavery, miscalled science. We must apply
ourselves more wholeheartedly to this battle.
OPERATION TESTIMONY
The testimony on The Communist Mind which I
gave to the House Un-American Activities Committee continues to reap a great
harvest. The Allen-Bradley Company of Milwaukee continues to supply an
ever-increasing demand from individuals, churches, schools and other
business firms. Under the leadership of their chairman, Mr Harry Bradley and
President Mr. Fred Loock, this company continues to do an outstanding work
for freedom. The Hamilton Standard Division of the United Aircraft
Corporation has published the testimony in a beautiful illustrated booklet.
This has been distributed by the Connecticut Association of Manufacturers.
Those desiring copies
of the booklet may secure them by writing to me.
I wish to express to
Mr. Harry Bradley and Mr. Fred Loock and the staff and personnel of the
Allen-Bradley Co. my sincere thanks for their hospitality and generosity. I
was privileged to address the conventions of their salesmen and
distributors.
South America
The testimony has been translated into Spanish. We are ready to begin
immediately the distribution to the students of the colleges and
universities of Central and South America. All we lack is the necessary
finance. We need $10,000.00 at once to get this project off the ground. Many
have encouraged us with words but to date very little money has been
contributed to this project. Can you help? The need is urgent.
KERALA, INDIA
Under the shadow of potential Communist
terror, our Kerala friends continue the publication and distribution of
Viswadeepam, which, being translated, means, "The Light of the
World."
George Thomas writes:
"In the past few months, as I have
written you from time to time, the Lord has miraculously increased our
work. The circulation of the magazine has come to 10,000 copies a month
and there is an ever increasing eagerness on the part of our readers and
the public to get the magazine. Also we have our share of difficulties.
For one thing, News-print has become scarce because Government is
restricting import due to foreign exchange difficulties. The price,
therefore, is rocketing high and I wish we could stock at least a supply
for six months. The paper alone will cost about $1500 for six months at
the present rate. I shall appreciate your prayers very much."
The project to secure
a daily newspaper in Kerala seems to have stalled temporarily as money is
not coming in for it. Fifty thousand dollars is a large sum. It scares
many people. While not abandoning this large project, here is a smaller
one which is surely within our grasp. Again George writes:
"My decision to
write you today itself resulted from the visit to this office yesterday by
our landlord. For the first time, he personally proposed the sale of this
property to me. The way in which he approached the issue and the liberal
terms he has proposed, point to the fact that it may be from the Lord. He
said that he has determined to sell the property along with many other
pieces he owns in the city. He is getting old and there is no one to look
after his affairs. His children are grown up and they are outside the
State.
"He is not in
any undue hurry about our executing the necessary deeds. But he wants us
to give him our word as soon as possible, that we will definitely but the
property. Then we may pay one half of the price, i.e., $2250 within the
next six months, and execute the documents. The balance need only be pain
in one installment or more within the next 18 months."
What answer
can I give?
That depends upon you.
Response through the mail has been so slow. Again the old, old question,
will you help?
THAILAND
From our friends and fellow-worker, Rev. C. T.
Walberg, Pastor of First Congregational Church of Redondo Beach, California,
we receive the following report:
"Dear Mr. Walberg:
I have just read Dr. Schwarz’s book ‘Communism-Diagnosis and Treatment’
and have been agonizing in prayer for him and all who are dedicated to God
and the kingdom of our Lord. Every Christian missionary should have Dr.
Schwarz’s books and make a study of them! I believe God has chosen him
to awaken and stir our beautiful America to action. As for me, the
challenge is clear. I don’t have money to buy and send these books to
other missionaries. What I want is more of these books to give to men in
strategic places. As you have money and time please send me these books.
If you could put these books on tapes we will play them at our
conferences. There should be a Thai translation of these books to give to
students and officials who do not know English." (Signed) Ruth
Perkins
CHINA
The following correspondence speaks for
itself:
"September 5, 1958
Dear Dr. Schubert:
This is to inform you:
1. There were over two hundred (200)
church preachers attended the conference on August 25, and prepared
program, establishment of Gospel teams at various counties and cities for
Taiwan’s preaching work and will spread Gospel work through organization
and training.
2. Two of your writing have been printed and issued to various agencies
and their subordinates. Those, who have read your writings, praise them as
powerful Anti-Communist medicine (The samples are enclosed.).
3. Please mail us another twelve manuscripts of your writings and support
us to print more and issue more.
4. We are planning to drop your writings to Chinese Communis occupied
territory in Asian Anti-Communist League’s and Mainland Relief
Association’s airplanes.
5. If you are going to request Americans to support us more printing
expense, then a surprising achievement will be acquired.
We pray for you every morning and every
evening.
May God bless your work and your family!
Your brother in Christ,
Wang Ship-ping"
"Rev. Wang Shih-ping
September 18, 1958
"Dear Dr. Schwarz:
"Thank you for your mighty letter dated September 10, 1958; which
greatly encourages our front line people. I would like to inform you the
actual situation here and my personal points of view:
1. The situation at Quemoy and Matsu:
The Chinese Communists have gathered their armed forces at harbors near
Amoy in the last few months. On August 23, after their complete
preparation, they shelled a sudden bombardment of 50,000 round on Quemoy,
and have been shelling in succession since then. The grave restriction of
our counter-shelling is that we cannot shell over the line and destroy
their combat capabilities. Therefore, we can now only to be beaten. The
mutual-defense fleet and airforce can only help and demonstrate at a
distance. Communists do not afraid at all of the deterrent policy, they
know very well that they can beat you over-line and you dare not to do so.
Therefore, they do not worry, they can fight and rest as they wish.
2. The situation in Taiwan proper:
All walks have been affected since the war broke out. We should like the
situation to be cleared after severe fight.
3. Tactics of Chinese Communists:
Their tactics include military and economical aids, organized smuggling,
low-price sale, infiltration, subversion, assassination, terror, local
warfare, peace talks, etc. The critical tactics among them is peace talk,
and we have lost our mainland through peace talk. The Communists gain
great profits while those who fear war like it much. The high-level and
low-level talks during these years have been ridiculous.
4. The free world needs superior, outstanding, and decisive leaders;
however, to our knowledge there is no one can beat the Communists.
5. We can only pray the almighty God to show His power to sweep out the
Devil’s influence, and to encourage His children to spread the Gospel
throughout all mankind.
6. We are urging more printing of your Anti-Communist publications, and
will drop them on China mainland and distribute them to Chinese overseas
everywhere. Please pray for us and believing God will help us succeed.
7. We have initiated a Christianity Taiwan Urgent Evangelization Center;
which gathers enthusiastic Christians, trains them and makes them spread
Gospel throughout mountain and level areas.
May the almighty God our father bless
your work and your family!
Your brother in Christ
Wang Shih-ping
Remarks:
1. I consider that he who keeps talks
with Communists has spoiled his character.
2. To appease the evil is a cruel act to the kind.
3. Now we bow to the evil while we can win. Communists is a tiger fed up
by the free world; if you do not kill it in time, you will be
killed."
ANTI-COMMUNISM
SCHOOL
We are anticipating a wonderful time at our
second School for Anti-Communists, to be held in Long Beach, December 1-5,
at the First Brethren Church. Leslie Millin of the Freedom Foundation of
Canada will be there. Richard Arens, Director of The House Un-American
Activities Committee, who delivered such a stirring and magnificent message
at our St. Louis School, proposes to come, subject always to the priorities
of the Committee. Rep. John Pillion of Buffalo, New York, who has studied
and taught in Congress the Communist Powers in Hawaii, will speak on
"Communism in Hawaii." Minds will be informed; hearts will be
inspired; speakers will be trained. You must come in person or by proxy.
Registration is $20.00, with half-rates for ministers and students. Will you
make it possible for your minister or some college student to come, if you
cannot attend yourself? Send your donation at once.
THE CRIMSON SHADOW
This film, produced by Gospel Films, Inc., of
Muskegon, Michigan, starring Dr. Fred Schwarz, is an outstanding success.
You must see it! You must enable your friends to see it! You can help to
have it shown at schools, churches, clubs, etc. Write to us or to Gospel
Films, Inc., Muskegon, Michigan for further information.
LOCAL GROUPS
The interest in the formation of local groups
increases in every part of the country. In some areas great initiative has
been shown and local people have gone to work with their own program.
Bridgeport, Conn. is an outstanding example. In June, I paid a fleeting
visit to this city. I considered the visit somewhat of a failure. In
October, I returned to find a flourishing local program under the direction
of the Pastor of the First Congregational Church of Little Rock, Rev.
Stanley Allaby and a surgean, Dr. Carleton Campbell. They will be asked to
furnish a report for the next Newsletter.
THE BLACK BOOK ON RED
CHINA
Ed Hunter, author of "Brainwashing in Red
China," "Brainwashing and Those Who Defied It," and "The
Story of Mary Lou," has added another magnificent contribution with his
book, "The Black Book on Red China." It must be widely read. It is
published by the Bookmailer, New York City, N. Y. The price is $2.00.
Encourage your book store to stock it. If you need it, write to our Crusade
and we will supply you with a copy.
AFRICA
Copies of "Our Africa," the magazine
we are helping publish in South Africa, have arrived. To say that we are
astonished at the superb quality is an understatement. The magazine is the
size of "Life." It has 36 pages. It is vital and interesting and a
tremendous contribution to the Christian cause. A photostat of the November
cover is enclosed. The $1,000.00 we have invested to date, and the future
investment we propose, will pay rich dividends.
We are also helping the
Evangelical Alliance Mission as per enclosed letter.

Christian Anti-Communism Crusade
PO Box 890
Long Beach 1, California
Dear Dr. Schwarz:
We enclose our receipt in the amount of $250.00, covering your contribution
to the publication of your book by our literature arm in South Africa. I
know this book will be used to great advantage in that area.
Sincerely yours,
Assistant General Publisher"
THE NEAR EAST
Following the arrival of the American troops
in Lebanon, a superficial lull has occurred in the hostilities in the Near
East. Nonetheless, the enemy is still engaged in a fierce assault with the
deadly weapons of half-truth, slander and outright lie.
Unsolicited, I have
received letters from Christians in Egypt. One man writes:
"You can’t imagine the tremendous
quantities of material the Communists are distributing here. Books,
magazines and leaflets of every sort and in many languages are given the
people to read or see. Enclosed are sample pictures from a booklet
entitled, ‘This is America’ which describes the Americans short of
barbarians."
ANDHRA
This is our oldest field and the workers labor
faithfully and fruitfully. Rev. Pushpanadham giving Baptism to the people on
the 10th of August, 1958 (in a picture).
Dr. Pushpanadham
writes:
"We are very happy to say that some
highly educated people such as College Lecturers, Engineers, Inspectors
are giving their best co-operation in our ministry by attending our Sunday
Services, Baptismal Services, Literature Crusade Campaigns and village
evangelism, and we do praise the Lord for His richest blessings upon our
ministry, and we do covet your most earnest prayers for us and our work.
Many people, such as Government officials, students and other young people
in different communities, including the high caste Hindus are gladly
accepting our literature and Bibles and they feel very happy to read the
Word of God. Even the village people are gladly accepting our literature
and praise our Lord for the Salvation Messages."
Bro. Ch.
Devananda Rao writes:
"We are again leaving for the
Jungle village work on the 6th of November to conduct night
meetings in various villages and communities. We would stay there about 15
days. It is very difficult to get into this area through the jungles and
rocks, but we feel it a great pleasure to work for Christ among these that
never heard the Word of God. We go with the literature we printed on our
press and also with Bibles and Testaments. Please pray for this most
important Evangelistic Trip in the slum areas. God is great and He would
wonderfully protect us while we go with our little Babu."
We are now
supporting fifteen workers in Andhra State. They urgently need a cutting
machine for their printing press.
OUR PRESIDENT
We regret to announce that our President, Dr.
W. E. Pietsch, has undergone further major surgery, but rejoice that present
indications suggest a favorable outcome. He would appreciate your interest
and support.
CLIMAX
The question naturally presents itself,
"Are we trying to do to much?" Would t not be better to
concentrate our efforts on one or two projects and do them well? The answer
depends on the vantage point on which we stand. Viewed from the standpoint
of our meager assets we are obviously attempting too much. We are spread too
thin. Viewed from the standpoint of the ever increasing Communist peril on
every side, we are obviously doing too little. Viewed from the vantage point
of faith in the power of God and His infinite love, what answer would you
give? Will you transmit your answer through your prayers and your gifts? God
guide, inspire, and bless you.
Christian Anti-Communism Crusade
Yours in the liberty of Christ,
Fred Schwarz
