SUMMIT CONFERENCE – VICTORY OR DEFEAT
The Summit Conference worked out much better than the most optimistic was entitled to anticipate. Nothing was bartered away. The whole idea of negotiating binding agreements with Communists is delusional. Frequently I am asked the question, "Do you think we should negotiate with the Communists?" I sometimes parry with my own question, "Do you think we should swim back-stroke to the moon?" This usually produces the blunt statement, "But your question is stupid"; and the equally blunt reply, "So is yours."
As long as Communism remains Communism, true negotiation with the Communists is impossible. At the risk of being repetitious, I would like to repeat the essential conditions for any true negotiation. One of the following conditions must exist:

1. External Judicial authority available to both parties to the agreement with authority to adjudicate disputes and power to enforce its decisions.
2. A moral code shared by both parties which obligates them to keep the agreement reached.

The most cursory survey will show that neither of these minimal conditions for successful negotiation exists. There is no external authority adequate to enforce its decisions to which appeal can be made and the Communist moral code urges the Communists to break the agreement if this will advance Communist victory.
In these circumstances the only possible outcome was that the free world would lose the negotiations. When one party to an agreement feels bound to fulfill its provisions and the other party does not, the outcome is obvious.
It was simply a question of how much would be lost at the Summit. The attitude of the participants for the free world would have been like that of the man under a compulsion to attend the races. He said, "I do hope I break even today. I certainly need the money." The best that could be hoped was that we would break even, and the action of Nikita Khrushchev in destroying the conference appears to have led to this result.
It may be argued, "But the Communists will keep an agreement if it is to their advantage." This is certainly true, but, if the conditions of the agreement are to their advantage, they would fulfill them whether there was an agreement or not. The concessions made to secure the agreement are thus made unnecessarily.

The Dialectic in Action
What we have been seeing is the dialectic in action. The philosophy of Communism is called Dialectical Materialism. Their slogan is, "Nature acts dialectically." The dialectic teaches that the goal is reached by a sequence of recurrent advances and retreats. The typical example is the hammering of a nail. Half the time the hammer is departing from the nail. Similarly the Communists achieve their goal by departing from it much of the time. The immediate Communist goal is the conquest of the entire world. It is not the conversion of the world to Communism, nor is it the military destruction of the United States. Therefore, each forward surge must stop short of the outbreak of actual hostilities. When the tension is built up, some concession can usually be secured as the apparent alternative to hideous atomic warfare. A period of smiling relaxation then follows until the movement is right for the next dialectical turn when another forward surge of threat, tension, and blackmail of terror is made. When Khrushchev has rung the last drop of advantage from this present crisis and his advance has reached a complete stalemate, we can expect another period of smiles and reconciliation in preparation for the next forward thrust. Their basic belief is that they are at war with the free world and every action must be judged by its relationship to the outcome of this war. Failure to understand this will certainly lead to concession and doom.

COMMUNIST VIOLENCE
The Communists have always been unabashed advocates of violence. In the Communist Manifesto Karl Marx and Frederick Engels climaxed with the statement, "The Communists disdain to conceal their views and aims." They openly declare that their ends can be obtained only by the forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions. Marx is the author of the famous statement that force is the midwife to deliver the child Socialism from the body of the aged parent Capitalism. Lenin teaches in his book "The State and the Revolution," which is now the world’s most translated book, that the transition from Capitalism to Socialism is impossible without a violent revolution.
Although the Communists are addicted to violence, they do not use it haphazardly. They have a carefully studied policy for the use of violence. They do not make a habit of assassinating their individual opponents in a non-revolutionary situation. Bolshevism was born in conflict with the Social Revolutionaries and Anarchists of Russia. Both of these groups used assassination as a normal instrument of policy. Lenin ridiculed this use of violence claiming it to be unscientific. He claimed that the Bolsheviks should concentrate on mass violence. Every effort should be made to stir up violence during a demonstration, a strike or wherever the emotions of a group of people were involved. The majority of those participating in the violent acts should not be Communists, but their violent actions should be advocated and directed by the Communists.
In a pre-revolutionary situation block captains, appointed far in advance by the Communists, would assassinate key opponents.
In a revolutionary situation, let rivers of blood flow.
In a post-revolutionary situation, the first step must be to liquidate potential leadership of the counter revolution.
When the revolution had firmly established its power, they would then exterminate their class enemies.
Lenin pointed out very carefully that their opposition to individual violence was discretionary and not absolute, expedient and not moral. Under special circumstances exceptions could be made.

Assassination of Trotsky
One of these exceptions was the assassination of the Communist leader, Leon Trotsky, in Mexico City in 1940. His assassin, Jacques Marnard, was recently released from a Mexican prison. With great secrecy he was transported out of Mexico by the Communist officials of the Czech Embassy. They headed for the Caribbean haven for Communism, Cuba.

Rioting in San Francisco
Typical Communist violence was that in San Francisco when the House Committee on Un-American Activities of the United States Congress held hearings on Friday, May the 13th. There was an infinitely ugly riot organized and provoked by the Communists utilizing volatile students from the University of California and San Francisco State College, and adult pro-Communist personnel, with fringe elements from other groups. This was violence directed at the constitutional authority of the United States Congress. Its viciousness had to be seen to be believed. It’s a stinging rebuke to those who under-estimate the significance of the Communist agitators.

Committees of Congress
The rioting in San Francisco is a tribute to the inestimable value of the Congressional investigating committees. The committee members submit to vile personal abuse and the infringement of all their civil liberties. The information they gather and publish is of the greatest value to everyone interested in the maintenance of liberty for the individual. A constant stream of fascinating booklets flows from these committees. The danger is – so few people read them. It is one of the purposes of the Crusade to keep our constituency informed concerning these fine publications as they are available.

Resurgence of Communism within America
The Communist Party within America is showing signs of increasing virulent activity. San Francisco is one of the hotbeds of Communist activity within the nation. A well known Communist in that area is Archie Brown. He openly admits being a communist. He was one of the initiators of violence in the San Francisco riots. Last November he ran for election as a supervisor of the city and county of San Francisco. He received 33, 583 votes. The San Francisco vote for an acknowledged Communist was more than double the membership claimed by the entire Communist Party U.S.A.

Tough Guy in Communist Leadership
A tough guy has taken over the leadership of the American Communist Party. His name is Gus Hall. The Senate Internal Security Sub-Committee has produced a booklet outlining the character and record of this man of violence. It may be secured by writing to the Government Printing Office or through the Crusade. He has openly acknowledged his willingness to take up arms to overthrow the constituted government of the United States. The testimony indicates that Gus Hall was the leader of a bomb and arson squad during the strike against Republic Steel Corporation in Warren, Ohio, in 1937. He was trained in sabotage and revolution at the Lenin School in Moscow. He plans to direct the Communist Party in its revived campaign utilizing violence and all other means for the destruction of free American and the triumph of International Communism.
"Know Your Enemy" is a cardinal rule of warfare. I strongly advise everyone to secure a copy of the booklet on Gus Hall, published February, 1960, by the Senate Internal Security Sub-Committee.

Midnight Conflict in Chicago
A few years ago in Kansas City, Missouri, I met ans appeared on the radio program of Mr. Lee Vogel, who conducted the type of program during which he spoke and interviewed visitors, and he and his visitors answered questions phoned in by the audience. Lee was a gracious host and became vitally interested in the Communist danger and carried on a continuing struggle for the preservation of American freedom on his program. This year he transferred to Chicago where he conducts the program, Night Line, on the NBC Station WMAQ from 11:05 P.M. through 1:30 A.M. Hearing that I was to visit Chicago, he called me and invited me to appear on his Chicago program. I accepted with delight as this provided a wonderful opportunity to bring a message to a tremendous audience in 38 states. Lee announced on his program that I would be his guest. Dr. Virgil Kraft, Associate Pastor of the People’s Church of Chicago, who had never met me and never heared me speak, but who had received a second hand report of a meeting conducted in Muskegon, Michigan, wrote to Lee Vogel expressing his total disagreement with my message. Lee invited him to appear on the program. His message was so pro-Communis, anti-American, and untruthful that it shocked and horrified many listeners. Alex Dryer, outstanding news Analyst and foreign correspondent, who served with distinction in both Germany and Russia, heard the program and was so incensed by the distortions of truth that he appeared voluntarily on the Sunday night program where he answered most effectively some of the outrageous claims and vicious slanders given by Dr. Kraft. I believe it best that people should hear and judge for themselves so we are making tape recordings of these sessions available. They can be secured by writing Mr. W. P. Strube, Jr., PO Box 6422, Houston 6, Texas. I urge those wishing to answer the question, whether pro-Communist forces operate in the church, to secure and listen to these recordings.
I express my sincere thanks to Lee Vogel for the sterling work that he is doing on his program to expose the Communist conspiracy.

Overseas Work
It must never be forgotten that the Communist program for the conquest of America is, encirclement plus demoralization equals surrender. The battle must be fought on both fronts. Our work around the world continues without abatement.

ANTI-COMMUNISM SCHOOLS
The schools to train anti-Communists continue to be amazingly fruitful. Their potentials are limitless. I believe they are the most hopeful development in America today. They are providing informed and effective servants in the cause of Christ and freedom. In addition to the week long schools we have held, and those we are planning to hold, our secretary and Texas director, Bill Strube, conducted a school in Houston on each Saturday in March. The mayor of Houston, Louis Cartora, proclaimed the final Saturday, March 26, as Anti-Communism Day.
Here is Bill’s report on this outstanding anti-Communism school:

"Houston Anti-Communism School Attended By Over 1000
"The Third Annual Christian Anti-Communism Crusade School was held the four Saturdays in March at the S.P. Martel Auditorium with some of the outstanding speakers in the country participating. This school is held in a little different manner from our other schools in that it is conducted on four consecutive Saturdays in March every year.
"The speakers this year included Clifton Ganus, Vice President of Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas; Capt. Richard Gregory, Commandant NROTC unit, Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana; Col. R. B. Thieme, Jr., Commandant Training Guidance Staff, 2697 Air Reserve Center, Ellington Field, Texas; Edward Hunter, author of "Brainwashing and the New Who Defied It," "Story of Mary Lui," and many other books, from Moultrie, Georgia; Fu Sung Chu, Minister Plenopotentiary from the Chinese Embassy in Washington, D.C.; Rev. Bob Ingram, Rector of St. Thomas Episcopalian Church, Belliare, Texas; Fred Schafley, Attorney from Alton, Illinois, who was one of the co-authors on the 1958 American Bar Association report that has had such widespread distribution; Rev. C. S. Dunker, the Spiritual Leader of the Cardinal Mindszenty Foundation in St. Louis, Missouri, telling of his experiences in China; Constantin Boldyreff, who has worked in the underground behind the iron curtain and now serves as lecturer and author from Arlington, Virginia, gave some new insights on what can be done behind the iron curtain in this battle for freedom.
"Dr. Fred C. Schwarz topped off the school with seven talks on Saturday, March the 26th.
"The average attendance at each session was over 300. Some session shaving almost 500 present.
"Between 20 and 30 tape recorders were going as each speaker presented his facts. These tapes will be duplicated and sent all over the world in the next few weeks. Tape recordings of speeches are available to anyone on our mailing list, should they desire them. These are recorded on 1800 ft. tapes and two messages are on any one tape for $5 per tape. Delivery at this time, because of a back log of tapes, will be about four to six weeks. Two additional Ampex Recorders have been purchased and should be operative by April 1st, which will relieve some of the pressure on duplication."

The Fourth Annual school is already scheduled and plans are under way to make it even bigger and better this next year.
Mr. Strube has conducted Saturday Seminars throughout the country. We will be happy to plan one for your area. Weminars scheduled and held April 7, in Dallas, Texas; April 23, in Miami, Florida; April 30, Estes Park, Colorado; May 7, Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania; May 14, Baton Rouge, Louisiana; May 21, St. Louis, Missouri; May 28, Artesia, New Mexico. Write for a Saturday Seminar Manual telling you how to plan one for your area.

Coming Schools
We are presently planning to conduct anti-Communism schools in San Diego, California, in August; Los Angeles, California, in September; Dallas, Texas, in October; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in November. Details concerning the precise dates and locations of these schools will be available soon. There is great interest in many other cities in securing a school for their area. If you are interested in a school for your city and desire to know what is necessary to secure one, write for information.

Study Circles
The outstanding development resulting from the schools is the study circle movement which is spreading like a fire across the nation. The credit for this development belongs in great measure to Bill Strube. At the very first school we held in St. Louis he was most insistent that priority should be given to tape recordings of the messages and that these tapes should be given the widest circulation. I tended to regard the tapes as a secondary feature of the school. I confess sincerely, Bill was right and I was wrong. These tapes have provided the mechanism by which any individual can most effectively inform his own friends and acquaintances of the nature of the Communist threat and the program needed to combat it. From these schools about a thousand study circles have been formed under various auspices and using various names across the country. This movement is developing with tremendous rapidity. A young man from Chicago was able to attend only the Saturday program of the Milwaukee Anti-Communism School. He secured the tape recordings of all the speakers. Two months later I returned to Chicago. I was astonished and delighted to find that he had established 13 study circles.
Reprint is a cope of the original promotion of the study circle prepared by Bill Strube. It is equally pertinent today. Our plan is to double the number of study circles in existence by the end of the year.

ANDHRA
Andhra continues a major field. The workers reach villages where the name of Christ is not known, with the glorious message of salvation. Our family of workers and orphans grows constantly. This work is true Christian love in action.

Waiting for a Loving Foster Parent
This dearly beloved boy is from a poor Christian family, and recently lost his dear mother after which his father became mad so this boy became quite helpless. The orphanage is taking care of him and giving proper Christian education and sending to the nearby primary school. We are confident that this boy would certainly become a good soldier for Christ in India in the future, and we need your prayerful assistance for this boy to prepare him as the real soldier in His Army.

Cordially yours in His service,
Mrs. Ch. Devananda Rao

AFRICA
The crisis continues to develop in Africa with unrest erupting all across the continent. Communism is on the march. Appeals flood in particularly for literature. The translation of the Heart, Mind and Soul of Communism into more and more languages is one of our great encouragements. Following is a letter from a missionary in Africa:

"Gentlemen:
I have a copy of your booklet, "The Heart, Mind and Soul of Communism," by Dr. Fred Schwarz. As missionary editor of Burakeye, Protestant magazine of Ruanda-Urundi, I’m writing to ask permission to translate and adapt this booklet for our magazine. It would appear in a series of articles over a few months’ period. There are some terms which would be quite difficult to translate into our native dialect, Kirundi, but we would adapt the material as necessary. Naturally we would give the customary credit line. We hear that this booklet has been translated into Swahili over in Congo.
We have already run 2 other series of various types about Communism and would like to continue doing what we can to fight it. We would appreciate a prompt response, if convenient. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Miss Reta Stuart
Missionary Editor, Burakeye

COMMUNISM AND RELIGION
Many people have been confused by the charges and counter charges made concerning Communist influence in various church organizations. We have received many letters asking for a statement on the matter. The Christian Anti-Communism Crusade is not in existence for the purpose of attacking any church or religious organization. Our motto is, "Speak the truth in love." We endeavor to be very sure of the facts and to avoid sweeping generalizations in attack. The technique of slander by half truth has been used against us all too frequently, and we have no desire to use it against any other group. Nevertheless, the truth must be faces honestly. For those desiring an objective factual incident of a Communist operative in a strategic church position, I present the following report of an experience by our fine friend, Mr. D. Hayes Murphy, Chairman of the Wiremold Company of Hartford, Connecticut. Everyone who has any acquaintance with Mr. Murphy knows of the gentleness and warmth of Christian compassion that characterize all his actions. He may be contacted at the above address for personal confirmation of these incidents.
"In 1933 I attended a Babson Conference at Wellesley Hills. The program was featured by three speakers – one explained Fascism, the second Socialism, and the third explained Communism. When the Communist got up to speak, he said that he agreed with Socialist so far as objectives were concerned but that Communists did not have the patience to wait for the world change to be brought about by peaceful parliamentary procedure. ‘We believe,’ said he, ‘that our cause is so essential to the welfare of the human race that we will employ any means – including force – to accomplish our purpose.’
"Communist X then turned to a Babson chart which was hanging on the wall behind him. It was the regulation Babson chart with its X-Y line showing the average upward trend of production with areas in black above that line indicating periods of prosperity and areas in red below the line indicating periods of depression. It was a long chart extending back to the 1870s. Communist X, pointing to the areas below the line, said, ‘These are depression periods and you will notice they are in red. That’s our color – red. And they are getting bigger and bigger as the years go by. Some day there will come a depression so big that unemployment and discontent will be general throughout the land. That will be the day when we start our revolution and take over the United States for Communism.’
"It was a blood-curdling speech and at that point a little lady in the audience just couldn’t take any more. She jumped to her feet and gave him the beautiful tongue-lashing he so well deserved. She told him that we didn’t want him in this country and if he thought the Russian system was so good, he should go there where he belonged. He listened politely and when she finished he said, ‘Madam, I presume you are an American citizen. I am an American citizen – born right here in Boston. I like it here and have no intention of accepting your invitation to go to Russia. In fact, when the revolution comes, I wouldn’t miss it for anything because I will be one of the leaders.’
"At the time this Communist was speaking, we were in the biggest of all depressions – the great depression of the ‘30's – and I often wondered why they did not take advantage of that situation to start their revolution.
"That, gentlemen, is the story of the 1933 Babson Conference and Communist X as I knew it at the time I spoke at a meeting of Civilian officers and committee chairmen last September. After that meeting, I determined to renew my efforts to find out who Communist X was and what he had been doing since 1933. So I wrote Babson’s again, urging that they make another search of their old files, which they did and this time came up with the answer.
"Here is the rest of the story:
"The name of the Communist X is Professor Harry F. Ward and his address, Union Theological Seminary, New York. I wrote Professor Ward asking him what he said at the 1933 Conference and how he felt about it now. Here is his reply dated October 17, 1959:
"‘Because of being retired and without a secretary, and two deadlines for an article and a pamphlet to meet, I have been unable until now to answer your request.
"‘I regret that I have no recollection of what I said at the Babson 1933 Conference. However, since that was the year that Scribner’s published by study of social incentives in the Soviet Union, which I made there during the academic year of 1931-2, under the title In Place of Profit, it is safe to say that what is in that book was the foundation of what I said. If your city library does not have a copy, your state library may, and should have an extension mail service.
"‘As to the second part of your request, another deadline denies me time to say anything except that I have kept informed up to date on my special interest in the Soviet Union and what I said in my book still stands up.’
"Sure enough, his book was in our Hartford Library and the card showed that it had been withdrawn 45 times in the years 1935 to 1959 inclusive.
"Two brief quotations from his book In Place of Profit will give you a general idea of its nature:

"‘The suppression of the minority of exploiters . . .will cost far less bloodshed than the suppression of the slaves, serfs, or wage laborers, and will cost the human race far less. So, today Communists say, WE ARE A HARD, CRUEL PEOPLE, EVEN TO OURSELVES, WE KEEP OUR EYES ON THE GOAL.’
"‘For the Compensating aspects of religion the Communists have no need, since theirs is a world-conquering faith.’"

The true Christian attitude in the face of failure in a beloved organization is one of humility and penitence. The normal carnal reaction is one of defensiveness on behalf of the organization and resentment towards the individual drawing attention to the failure. One measure of Christian character is the reaction to disclosures of this type. Every church leader should feel the burden of failure to obey the great commission of our Lord. The mere fact that we have not actively supported Communism is no justification for pride or complacency. There are sins of omission as well as sins of commission. The church needs a revival of repentance, faith, and love. This revival will be characterized by a willingness to confront unpleasant truth and act in the light of that truth.

KERALA
We have taken a step in faith and secured the deposit for the rotary press for our brother, George Thomas, to continue his work. This imposes a severe additional financial burden during the coming four months but will be a major step towards making the newspaper self supporting, thus increasing its effectiveness and diminishing our financial burden. God has truly performed miracles in enabling us to support this venture. Time and again the money necessary has come to hand just before the deadline.

LOVE
Love is measured by sacrifice not pious phrases, "God so loved the world that He gave." Our love to our children, our church, our country, and our Christianity is a hollow mockery unless we are prepared to make sacrifices to save them. Calvary is the supreme manifestation of love and action. May we experience the joy of sacrifice motivated by love.

Your Christian friend and brother,
Fred Schwarz

Christian Anti-Communism Crusade

HELP FROM ACROSS THE WATER
America is carrying a heavy burden for the financial support of workers around the world. It is encouraging when Christians in other countries contribute their support. There is one church in New Zealand that is an inspiration in its generosity and Christian love. It is the Commonwealth Covenant Church of Lower Hutt, New Zealand. The following letter speaks for itself. To our New Zealand friends we say. "A fervent thank you and God bless you."

"Dear Dr. Schwarz,
We received your monthly news letter for January and were greatly moved to read of the real battle of faith which has been Dr. George Thomas’ lot in Kerala to maintain the publication and circulation of the ‘Voice of Kerala’ newspaper. Quite a number of our members have felt they would like to send something to help him through this difficult period and have handed us contributions for this purpose. We have added to these amounts so as to bring the total up to $900 sterling and we are enclosing a cheque for this amount made payable to Dr. Thomas in India. We were very gratified to see that the Communist Party was defeated in the recent elections in Kerala and are sure that the Voice of Kerala played no small part in helping to achieve this result. We noted, however, that the Communist vote had increased since the previous election and so can see that there is much yet to be done if they are to be kept from gaining control again at a later date. We would be pleased if you could forward this cheque on to Dr. Thomas with our prayers and best wishes for God’s blessing upon his work there.
We are enclosing another cheque also for the work of the Indian Christian Crusade in Andhra State. This is part of the special offertory we take up in our church each Christmas for the help of Christians in need in other lands. We reduce our giving of gifts to one another to a minimum and contribute the money saved to this special fund. We would like $150 of this cheque allocated for the use of the Orphanage, and the balance of $450 utilized for the work of combating Communism and spreading the true ‘good news’ of our Lord Jesus Christ among the people. Our best wishes and prayers for Dr. Devananda Rao and his other helpers, and Mrs. Rao with her work in the orphanage, we pass on with this gift.
You mentioned recently that you have a tape available of debate between yourself and the chairman of the Communist Party of Massachusetts. Would it be possible to let us have one of these tapes.
With best wishes and praying God’s blessing on your work for Him.

Yours in His Service,
Commonwealth Covenant Church
G. C. Heggi, Secretary"
