ILLNESS OF CAPT. E. R. BARNES

A BOOK IS BORN
"I’ll venture to make a prophecy – this book will well one million copies." The speaker was Captain E. R. Barnes, District Chaplain of the Eighth Naval District, and the book to which he was referring was the new textbook on Communism, "You Can Trust the Communists," written by Dr. Fred Schwarz and published by Prentice-Hall of New Jersey.
The prophecy of Capt. Barnes appears highly visionary is we consider the circulation of other books against Communism. It is not impossible to achieve. The book has received excellent reviews. One outstanding one was published by the St. Louis Globe Democrat on Sunday, August 28, 1960. The reviewer is Editor Emeritus of the paper. The review is here published in full.

"Reviewed by Louis La Coss

YOU CAN TRUST THE COMMUNISTS, by Dr. Fred Schwarz
(Prentice-Hall, Inc.)
–This detailed expose of Communist machinations toward its long objective of world conquest should be read by every American, especially by the millions

who are unaware of the insidious and subversive tactics employed by our enemy in its determination to win the class war which it believes will destroy Capitalism, which means the United States. It is a terrifying account of intrigue, deception, fake promises, illegal acts, "brainwashing," seduction of the intellectuals and shrewd manipulation of dupes, many of whom believe they are anti-Communists but actually are the tools of the Kremlin. And the hours is late to meet this challenge.
"The title, "You Can Trust the Communists," is deceptive in that you can trust the Communists only to do precisely what they have said they will do. Their intentions, beliefs and methods have been stated many, many times and there has been no deviation from the course they plotted under Lenin, carried on by Stalin and Khrushchev. They have proclaimed a fight to the finish with Capitalism and the war is prosecuted relentlessly on schedule. The author is Dr. Fred Schwarz, an Australian who have traveled around the world to attack the Communists and to warn all of us of impending danger. He has spoken in St. Louis.
"For those who have the will to be informed–hence, able to meet the Red challenge–this is an invaluable handbook.
"He describes how cells and fronts are formed. He reveals the studies technique of "brainwashing." He tells about the discipline and sacrifices demanded from every party member as well as the fellow travelers and sympathizers, even to the point of confessions of guilt which actually does not exist but which causes men and women to stand in the dock and admit they have betrayed the working class, which they have not.
"It is not easy to become a party member. The Communists have never aimed at the conversion of great masses of people. "Their whole concept," writes Dr. Schwarz, "is that of a small party, compact, mobile, disciplined and dedicated, consisting largely of an intellectual elite. It is the task of this small group to utilize scientifically the social forces that move and direct the masses of the people, so that the Communist party may come to power over them, and impose forcibly the Communist program.
"‘The program of Communism is to recruit into the services of the party great numbers of individuals most of whom are unconscious that they are serving the Communist purpose.’
"Among the latter are students around the world who play the Communist game to the hit although the majority of them are not Reds, perhaps are openly anti-Communist. They are the notable dupes, the pseudo-liberals who entertain delusions of making the world better by aiding and abetting the diabolically clever men in Moskow.
"Lenin established the movement known as Bolshevism in 1903. He had 17 supporters. Ten years later he conquered Russia with a party of approximately 40,000 members. By 1959 the party of Lenin controlled one billion persons. ‘In one generation,’ says Dr. Schwarz, ‘the godless Communists have brought under their control 12 times as many as Hitler ruled at the beginning of World War II, 12 times as many as the Japanese ruled, and six times the population of the United States. In less than half a century, they have conquered far more than the total number of the world’s population who have heard the minimum story of Christ from any source after nearly 2000 years.’
"The answer to the problem of combating the Communists lies in the area of education–education of the masses to the menace that is engulfing them while they are not aware of it. The Communists have state their plans and they are right on schedule. It is not easy even to recognize a Communist. They are shrewd and disciplined; the truth to them is what the party heads–the Presidium–says is the truth.
"It is all very terrifying, particularly so because so many millions, even billions, are the unwitting tools of the Reds.
"Every American should read this book. The various Foundations which are always ‘doing something’ for people around the World, might well see to it that ‘You Can Trust the Communists’ is available to everybody who can read, and who is able to work individually to prevent our destruction. I cannot emphasize this too strongly."
It has long been my contention that education concerning the nature of Communism is vitally necessary but that the education must be morally directed and designed to expose the evil nature of Communism and its program to destroy all free men. Such education must operate within the framework that freedom is good, slavery is bad. It must start from the premise that God is and that truth and righteousness exist because of the Being and Nature of God. Education concerning Communism should promote a greater love of the Christian heritage of freedom and a dedication to the defeat of the Communist enemy.
I am convinced that this book contributes greatly towards these objectives. It is suited for classroom study and would make a fine textbook for high school and college. While its message is understandable by all, every effort has been made to be accurate and thorough.
"I am asking the friends of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade to cooperate in securing the widest circulation for this book. You might do this in the following ways:

1. Immediately secure and read the book.
2. Present a copy of the book to the educational authorities of your district who have the responsibility for choosing the textbooks for the schools.
3. Make sure that copies are readily available in your local library.
4. Suggest that it be used as a study book by your Sunday School class, fellowship club, or study group.
5. Give copies as Christmas and birthday presents.
6. Encourage industries to provide copies for their key personnel.
7. Send copies to missionaries throughout the world. The tragic lesson of our unpreparedness in the Congo should be obvious to all.

The price is $2.95 and it can be secured from our office of from your local bookstore.

ANTI-COMMUNISM SCHOOLS
No words can adequately describe the anti-Communism schools conducted in San Diego and Chicago. Only those who attended can appreciate the tremendous enthusiasm and inspiration that was generated. In each city the registration was in excess of 2,000 and the conclusion of each school found hundreds dedicating themselves to a grogram of relentless activity to defeat the Communist enemy. A unique feature of the San Diego Anti-Communism school was the unprecedented publicity provided by the newspapers of that city – The San Diego Union and Tribune. These newspapers are publications of the Copley Press. Com. Paul Terry is the educational director of the Copley Press. He was Co-Chairman of the San Diego School. Prior to the opening of the school, a special Sunday supplement was published outlining the extent of the encirclement consummated by Communism. Throughout the school, front page publicity was constantly provided for the speakers and their messages accompanied by fine photographs. The Copley Press should serve as an inspiration and challenge to the press of America. Freedom of the press carries with it grave responsibility. Letters of testimony concerning the influence of the School have flooded our office. The few extracts following are selected at random from a great number:

"Last week I attended faithfully the School for Anti-Communists in San Diego. Every night I returned home to Solana Beach to bring some of our people, young and old, to the evening meeting. To make a long story short, I cam away a Crusader. This is a cause to which I can give by best and to which I pledge my best."
–Chester E. Whittier, Community Presbyterian Church, Solana Beach, California

"I attended the entire school at San Diego recently and have begun a series of Sunday night sermons on Communism. It is a great experience and I am doing all I can to get the word out."
–Phillip A. Shelton, First Baptist Church, Lakeside, California

"As a result of attending several of the most wonderful and eye opening sessions of your anti-Communism school, I should like to order some additional material. My husband and I are so thankful that such an organization as yours exists, and we thank God that you have shown us active ways in which we can assist in wiping out this dreadful disease."
–Mrs. James G. O’Connell, San Diego, California

"Both myself and our 16-year-old son attended the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade in San Diego. We are standing up to be counted. As president of the women’s group of our Lutheran Church, I shall present the work there. I will start neighborhood coffee groups. Our son wants to help, or shall I say, be put to work."
–Leona Betts

"I promise from this day forward to present my body as a living sacrifice to the cause of God and my country, and I pray that the Lord will give me the strength and wisdom to stand by the convictions that your able staff has brought alive in my heart."
–Elizabeth Courtney, LaJolla, California

"It was not until we took some definite steps in the right direction that we were able to attain a night’s sleep."
–Mrs. L. E. Martin, San Diego, California

"The school for anti-Communists was a needed jolt to all of us in San Diego. We are grateful to you and your associates for the learned, factual, and well-interpreted and striking presentation of the danger of atheistic Communism and the necessary means by which it can and must be combated. The speakers were well prepared, wonderfully articulate, and followed a delicate but firm path of objectivity."
–Right Reverend Monsignor George M. Rice, Rector, St. Joseph’s Cathedral, San Diego.

"Although I am only 12 years old, through this school I have come to realize the threat of Communism hanging over our freedom. Enclosed is a check for $100."
–Diane Porrier, Escondido, California.

The San Diego School received the cooperation of the Education Department, the Churches, and Industry. It is proposed to incorporate the messages into many schools throughout the area. Some of the large industries are playing the tape recordings and transcribing and publishing them for their personnel. Literally scores of study circles have been commenced in church, civilian, and military groups. Who can measure the greatness of the achievement? Tape recordings can be secured by writing to Mr. W. P. Strube, Jr., P.O. Box 6422, Houston 6, Texas.

Chicago School
In the Chicago are the school was conducted at the Glenview Naval Air Station but the Navy itself was not the host. They graciously made their facilities available and many Navy personnel worked feverishly in their spare time. For this they were rewarded with an attack by spokesmen for the American Civil Liberties Union. My reply was that these gentlemen are so formal in their approach and dedicated to the letter rather than the spirit, that if a man rushed into traffic to snatch a little girl from under the wheels of an onrushing bus, they would advocate his arrest for jay walking. The fight against Communism is everybodies business.
It is encouraging that the Secretary of the Navy, W. B. Franke, did not yield to these attacks. His reply is given in the article by Mr. Philip Dodd, published by the Chicago Daily Tribune.
The gracious Commander of Glenview Naval Air Station, Captain I. M. Hampton, writes, "We can never thank you enough for conducting your marvelous school in the Chicago area. I know that the kind of thanks that you want can best be expressed in devotion to our cause. Somewhat indicative of this thanks is expressed in approximately 125 letters we have received commending the school. To date there have been no letters condemning the Nave for offering their facilities. I have received numerous phone calls in praise of your school and of you and also copies of about fifteen letters addressed to the Secretary."
As in San Diego, it is difficult to measure or describe the enthusiasm of the participants in the school. Everywhere the cry was, "Let us go to work and spread this message to every corner of the country." Hundreds of tape recordings were immediately requested to carry out this plan.
This school was conceived and very largely organized by Naval Reserve Officer and Chicago Businessman, Frank Vignola. Frank attended the Anti-Communism School in San Francisco and returned to Chicago filled with enthusiasm and determination. At the conclusion of the school Frank wrote a letter, and I take the liberty to quote it:

"Having been in your company for a full week, I know now you have God’s special graces always keeping you up in excellent humor and indefatigable.
"We had a tremendous school and judging by the demands and requests for future schools and programs of a like nature, we can be sure the midwest has begun a real program of action.
"Once agin you provided the all important knowledge to hundreds of people. I know of no other man in the United States who can ignite the motivational spark as well as you. I also do not know of any other one man, group, or organization who has done as much singly or collectively to awaken our sleeping America."
With humility I say, "Thank you, Frank."

When you read this, the Dallas School will be history. It is probable that is will surpass both San Diego and Chicago. The report will be in our next News Letter.

CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE’S ARTICLE ON NAVY SUPPORT OF ANTI-COMMUNISM SCHOOL
"Navy Defends Use of Base to Warn of Reds
Supports Glenview Officials’ Actions

By Philip Dodd

"Washington, Sept. 12–Secretary of the Navy W. B. Franke has defended officials of the Glenview, Ill., Naval Air Stations against charges of ‘propagandizing’ in connection with an anti-communist seminar at the station Aug. 28 to Sept. 2.
"Tyler Thompson, Northwestern university philosophy professor and Democratic candidate for Congress from the 13th district, and the Illinois division of the American Civil Liberties Union had lodged complaints with Franke.
"It was learned Monday that Franke had written Thompson Sept. 8 and told the professor it was a well established practice for the navy to lend its facilities for nonpartisan activities which provide ‘important moral and patriotic indoctrination for naval personnel.’

"Conducted by Psychiatrist
"The seminar was conducted by Dr. Fred C. Schwarz, a psychiatrist and president of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, which has its headquarters in California.
"Thompson and the Civil Liberties union had accused the navy of making itself an instrument for ‘propagandizing of the civilian populace.’
"Frank told Thompson his investigation showed no American political party was mentioned or referred to ‘with bias’ in the Glenview seminar. He said he was sure Thompson would not consider ‘that information regarding the dangers of the international communist conspiracy is "political propaganda" which should not be given the American people.’

"‘An Easy Choice’
"‘In Summary, the navy feels that when our help is requested (and circumstances are such that the assistance would not interfere with normal operations or extend public funds), our decision rests on consideration of whether we should use our freedoms to improve our strength, or use their protection as an excuse to smother our vitality and allow ourselves to atrophy from inactivity while the need for strength grows by the hour.’
"Franke wrote, ‘It is an easy choice for navy men to make.’
"Franke said any assistance given by the navy to ‘legally organized’ activities such as the Glenview seminar is provided for the ‘sole purpose of improving our defenses.’

"‘In Best Interests of U.S.’
"This assistance is clearly in the best interests of the navy, the nation, and freedom itself–which has suffered too much of late from inertia imposed under the guise of protecting precious freedom traditions,’ the secretary said.
"Franke acknowledged that prior to the seminar, Glenview officials had gone ‘somewhat farther than may have been appropriate’ in cooperating with the sponsors but that prior to the meeting they had been advised by the navy department ‘to publicly correct any impression of navy sponsorship.’

NEED TO RECAPTURE IDEALS CITED AT ANTI-COMMUNIST SCHOOL
By shunning personal responsibility for morality "we are permitting the foundation stones of our great America to crumble under us," a Navy chaplain told students at last night’s school for Anti-Communists.
"We’ve got a sickness in this country," said Capt. E. R. Barnes, Eighth Naval District chaplain, New Orleans, "that you and I need to get on our knees and pray about."
Barnes said "we must put the highest priority on recapturing and revitalizing the character and qualities that have made this nation great. Ideals have to be ‘brought’ inside of us; we have to accept responsibility."
While the nation’s founders have "built a system incomparable to anything that ever happened on this planet before," Barnes said, "we ourselves seem to falter and lose faith in this wonderful American dream."
Referring to the U.S. servicemen who North Korean prisoners of war defected, Barnes observed: "If they failed, we failed; let’s not be so busy pointing the finger at them."
Through that experience with Communists’ brainwashing, he said, "we found out a lot about ourselves. We found out we must do something about recapturing the qualities of American manhood that made this nation free."
Backing up his contention that the nation has "slipped" morally, Barnes pointed to the sharp increase in crime, especially by juveniles, saying that crime will "bring us down" before communism would if the increase continues.
If the nation goes to war, Barnes said, "50 per cent of the 17-year-olds won’t go with us. Twenty per cent of those reaching military age already have police criminal records. Thirty per cent are physically unfit. Those who do come through (into the service) cause plenty of trouble. One man can throw away responsibility and endanger life on the whole ship."
Communism, he said, means "genocide, social and pedagogical manipulation of human beings. They’re trying to unsell us on valor, on faith, on hope, religion, love, marriage, family . . .on the very idea of right and wrong. There is no natural law, they say, no truth."
The second speaker, Dr. Fred Schwarz, executive director of the sponsoring Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, said Communist claims of perfecting human nature are "insane," and that the result of communism is not human perfection but enslavement.
"Communism is the denial of all civilization. That’s the reality, however beautiful the vision may be."
Communism, Schwarz added, holds no political, judicial, constitutional or moral restraints and pays no attention to public opinion. "Its present brutality," he said, "cannot be justified by its ‘alleged future prosperity’."

THE ORPHANS
This little boy needs parents. You may feed and clothe him and provide him with an education and spiritual training for $10 a month. Whose heart will respond to this need?

CUBA
There is great similarity between the conquest of China and the conquest of Cuba by the Communist forces. This is brought out very clearly by a publication of the Senate Internal Security Sub Committee entitled "Communist Threat to the United States through the Caribbean." This deserves special study if we are to prevent all South America becoming Communist territory. The booklet may be secured by writing to the Senate Internal Security Sub committee of the Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C.

ILLNESS OF CAPT. E. R. BARNES
One of the great friends of the Crusade is Capt. E. R. Barnes, Chaplain of the 8th Naval District, centered in New Orleans. Capt. Barnes has been one of the speakers at our schools speaking on the Moral Foundation of Military Power. We were saddened to hear he has suffered a heart attack and will be temporarily laid aside. We pray that he will make a speedy and complete recovery and extend our sympathy to his wife and very fine family.

REDS WINNING BATTLE TO CONQUER ALL, CONGRESSIONAL AIDE REPORTS
Politicians Urged to Arouse People
The Communists are winning their battle to conquer "every body and soul," the staff director of the House Un-American Activities Committee told last night’s School for Anti-Communists.
"Why are they winning?" Richard Arens asked. "Their ideology is fallacious. Surely freedom is mora appealing than slavery and death.
"They are winning because the leadership of the free world – with few exceptions – does not recognize a Communist as a Communist and communism as communism. They think it is still a popularity contest. They do not recognize that you can no more coexist with communism than the human body can with cancer."

Politicians Cited
Arens told the crowd the American people cannot start winning the battle against communism until "leaders of both parties tell the people of the United States not just what they want to hear but tell them the truth.
"And the truth is that there is no other course but to fight communism and to fight it with all our might. The only other course is enslavement and death.
"There are no easy answers. We need dedication, we need sacrifices, perhaps blood and life itself, because at stake now is our Christian civilization."

Theory Assailed
He castigated communism as the denial of the human soul, all standards of morality and all morality stemming from concepts of God, in favor of the theory that man is controlled solely by materialistic forces.
"They who deny the primacy of the spirit have zeal unmatched by the early Christian martyrs." Arens warned.
"Of the 86 nations on this planet, only one – the United States of America – stands in the way of world domination by this force. . . (which is) irrevocably, totally committed to total war."
Ticking off what he called the Communist "pattern of subversion," Arens charged that Communists have infiltrated our radar defense and communications networks, newspapers and other printed media, education, art and labor unions and have gained by court decisions ruling that their activities are merely political.

Red Control Told
He said testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee was that "tie lines and lease lines out of the Pentagon and the North Atlantic cable are still serviced by Communists" in the American Communications Association, which he said has been named in committee hearings as Communist controlled.
"The 65,000-member International Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers Union is controlled lock, stock and barrel by the (Communist) conspiracy," Arens declared.
"As for Communists in government," he said, "we don’t know, our hands are tied."
Commenting on Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev’s recent visit of the United States, Arens said:
"My judgement is that the invitation (for Khrushchev to come) was wrong." He said it was wrong morally and actically.
Arens said the economic life of Hawaii is "in the hands of an international Communist agent, Harry Bridges, and his international longshoremen."
Dr. Fred Schwarz, executive director of the sponsoring Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, said Communists thrive on mass violence, exploiting racial discrimination, civil liberties, fear of the atom bomb and the desire for peace.

FINANCE
Our work continues to grow and the financial needs continue to expand. Our regular income has been adequate for our routine needs, but projects such as the rotary press for Kerala require additional sacrifice and support. I submit the special need to you with the utmost confidence in your generous response.
During the school in San Diego, a man approached me and indicated how wonderful he thought the information given by the school was but added that it had induced in him a most profound depression. Sleep had become a stranger to him and the pillow and sheets of his bed were soaked with perspiration as he tossed and turned all night. For this man I prescribed faith in Christ and a program of energetic action. Impression without expression leads to depression. There is an exhilaration in the conflict with the foe. Will you take up the sword of truth and battle for righteousness and freedom?

Your Christian friend,
Fred Schwarz
