The F.B.I.
Director, J. Edgar Hoover, has declared that the Communist Party in San
Francisco specifically planned to organize mass demonstrations during the
committee hearings and that Archie Brown planed to behave in such a manner
that it would be necessary to forcibly eject him from the hearing room in
the hope that this would stimulate excitement and mass action.
History records what
actually took place when the Committee conducted its hearings. Agitators on
the campuses of some of the colleges and universities in the San Francisco
area stirred up the students and depicted the House Committee as a kangaroo
court and the hearings as a witch hunt and persuaded them to attend and
endeavor to degrade the hearings in every way. It is unquestioned that the
majority of these students had no desire to serve the cause of Communism and
were quite unaware that they were so doing, yet the situation conceived and
planned by the Communists came to pass.
In the hearing room
there was bedlam. A group of Communists staged a display scarcely
conceivable because of its viciousness. They were cheered and encouraged by
many of the students within the chamber. These events were captured for
posterity by the cameras and microphones of the news reel and television
photographers and radio commentators.
At the consumation of
the hearings noise outside the hearing room became so great that a judge,
who was totally unassociated with the Committee, ordered the police to clear
the corridors. With contempt for the law, the students refused to obey and
it was the duty of the police to obey the command of the judge. Rioting
broke out and the evidence indicates that the police acted with remarkable
moderation in the fulfillment of their duty.
The House Un-American
Activities Committee subpoenaed the films and the tape recordings and
produced from them the film "Operation Abolition." Sequences are
interspersed with commentary by members of the Committee.
Almost everyone, who
views the film with an open mind, is most profoundly aroused and disturbed
by it. It suggests the vulnerability of the student to the clever Communist
agitator. It carries a warning of what could happen here.
There are many whose
minds are made up in advance of the evidence and to them the House
Un-American Activities Committee must be evil and opposition to it must be
good. They are prepared to ignore the evidence of their senses in the
interest of the maintenance of their convictions. This attitude has been
common through history as illustrated by the following story:
Aristotle was the
accepted authority on all things anatomical for centuries. What he said was
the "truth." He declared that the veins in the brain of the dog
followed a certain path. In due course an inquiring mind, called Galen,
operated upon a dog and found that Aristotle was incorrect. With great
courage he took this heretical discovery to the authorities. In an effort to
convince them, he produced the brain of the dog and showed them the course
of the veins. The authorities met in solemn conclave and after due
consideration produced the verdict, "The dog was wrong."
The Washington Post and
its cohorts have produced the verdict that the cameras and microphones were
wrong. In an editorial the Washington Post attacks the film and finishes
with the statement "This film makes a dirty joke of the Congressional
power."
The attack on the film
has been spearheaded by certain chapter of the American Civil Liberties
Union. This attack features certain points. Some of them are as follows:
1. The film is edited.
2. Sequences shown in the film are out of order.
3. The film does not depict the actual brutality they alleged the police
displayed.
4. The film does not emphasize the role played by the passes issued by the
Committed to individuals from groups sympathetic to the Committee.
An
objective analysis shows that these objectives are either largely irrelevant
or false. Let us consider them in order:
The
editing of the film. Of course the film was edited. It would have been
impossible to produce it otherwise. If this constitutes a serious
objective to it, every news reel film shown is evil and every newspaper
report is subject to condemnation. All these are edited and the processes
of editorship involves selection of the most significant events for
presentation to the public.
The sequence of the
events. Every lover of law and order must be appalled by the events that
took place both inside and outside the hearing chamber in whatever
sequence they are displayed. It is difficult to observe the arrogant
boorishness of Communist Archie Brown or the malignant hatred of William
Mandel without nausea.
Police Brutality. The
allegation of police brutality is contradicted by the events. Brutality on
the scale alleged would have been impossible without injuries. The absence
of serious injury among the rioters labels these allegations as
defamatory. The majority of the injuries were suffered by the police. One
of the objectives of the Communist organizers was to create a brutal image
of the police. Fortunately the film record has been preserved of by this
time the oft repeated lie would have been accepted as the truth by great
groups of people.
Special passes to the
hearing. Passes were certainly issued to sympathetic individuals, but a
viewing of the film will clearly show where the sympathizers of the many
of those present inside the chamber lay.
It is not
suggested that this film is perfect or completely devoid of mistakes. Very
few things which are human can meet this standard. If the mind is committed
in advance and determined to find some fault with it as a pretext to
discredit the entire film and its message, this can always be done. It is an
old adage that says "There are none so blind as those who won’t
see."
This film has a vitally
important message to every American who desires to defeat the plans of
Communism for the conquest of this land. We urge that you make every effort
to see it and to show it to others.
It is encouraging to
note that support for the House Un-American Activities Committee has been
great. The leader of the attack on the Committee in Congress has been
Representative James Roosevelt. It was anticipated that he would introduce a
bill to abolish the Committee this year as he did last year.
According to an article
which appeared in the Washington Post on January 1, 1960, Representative
Roosevelt wrote a letter to his fellow Congressmen urging them to clip the
wings of the Committee by reducing its spending money. In his letter to his
colleagues Roosevelt said that he would not put them on the spot at this
time with a test vote to kill off the Committee. He said it was
"politically dangerous for many members of Congress to express by means
of direct vote their innermost feelings about the Committee."
The average citizen is
alarmed at the ever-increasing Communist peril. They appreciated the
searchlight of truth being focused on the Communist enemy. The House
Un-American Activities Committee brings to light the truth of many of the
activities of the Communists. This is why they hate it so.
The Congress of the
United States is entrusted with legislation in the interests of this great
Republic. To legislate adequately it requires knowledge concerning new
dangers and the adequacy of existing laws. For this purpose committees are
established. The House Un-American Activities Committee is an instrument of
constitutional government. Those who do not like the Committee have no more
right to defy it than to defy the judgment of the Supreme Court. The rule of
law must be maintained.
A SUPPORTER
SPEAKS
One of the warm and generous supporters of the Christian Anti-Communism
Crusade is Norman Vander Veen of Modesto, California. He appreciates America
because he has lived under totalitarian terror. When he told me his story, I
was so impressed, I asked him to write it for publication. How lightly we
take our glorious privileges.
"My dear fellow Americans:
It has not been very long since I can call you by this name for I became
an American citizen myself less than one year ago.
I was born in
Holland, and I will always be proud of my little native country, but I’m
also very happy to live here now.
During the last world
war we went through the terror of five years of occupation by the forces
of Hitler. Five long years of Nazi tyranny. We have seen national
socialism in action and we know, by our own experience, what it means to
lose just about all freedom.
It is a terrible
thing, when the press, the radio, the right of speech, of assembly, etc.,
are controlled by a dictatorship.
Can you imagine what
it means, when you cannot speak or act freely? That if you would express
any opinion, contrary to the party line, you could expect the knock at the
door, at midnight? That meant that you would be arrested, thrown into a
concentration camp waiting for an almost certain death in the greatest
misery.
Perhaps you can
imagine a little of our joy, when we saw the Canadian and American troops
move in to liberate us from the yoke of slavery. We admired those men who
gave their life for the freedom of mankind, and we should always be
thankful for the great sacrifices they made.
After living here for
seven years, I must say, that this great country has the highest standard
of living in the world, that, in general, its people are the finest I’ve
ever met. It is amazing what a tremendous task has been fulfilled in
building this country for what it is today; in less than two centuries.
However, I am very
disappointed in one respect. Although we enjoy a measure of freedom almost
unequaled on earth; although we live in an abundance not to be found in
any other country; although we have a splendid constitution based on
Christian principles; hardly anybody seems to be concerned about
preserving this freedom and those God-given privileges. We are still
living in the land of the free, but is it still the home of the brave?
Why is it, that a
people that sends out its men to the battlefields of the world to die for
the cause of freedom, can now tolerate the forces of evil to infiltrate
deeply into its society, with the sole purpose of destroying all of this
freedom? Is it not clear to all of us that our liberties are in great
danger?
My dear fellow
citizens! We don’t have to be afraid for another world war. We are fully
engaged in a war a present, a spiritual war to the bitter end. The parties
are the forces of good under Christ’s command, and the forces of evil
with Satan. The weapons are not principally missiles, satellites,
submarines and hydrogen bombs but far more – the printed page,
communications, economic warfare.
Everyone honest
enough to face the facts will come to the conclusion that the situation is
very critical. All the evidence is there to prove that Communism advances
very rapidly.
The Communists say
that they are ordained to conquer this world, and they plan to bring this
to pass within a very short time.
After we have
examined the facts, we could say that this is a hopeless situation and sit
down in great despair. This certainly would not be a stand to take for a
Christian, and it would serve the Communist cause very effectively.
There is no place for
the complacency of people who way, ‘After all, God rules the world, and
He will make all things right.’ I fully agree that He will, but don’t
you think that you could form an active part in His plan? Didn’t Jesus
order us to pray and work?
There is only one
position we can take. We are either FOR or AGAINST Christ. If we are for
Christ, we will have to go all the way. The future does not depend on the
Communists. If freedom should perish from the earth, it would be because
of our sin, our complacency, our lack of faith and courage.
If a Communist is
willing to give everything, even his life, for the cause of his false
ideals, should we not be ready to dedicate ourselves completely to the
cause of freedom? Don’t we have enough to stand for? I think we
certainly have.
So often we hear the
question, ‘What can we do?’ Don’t only ask this question and blame
others for what they do wrong. Remember, we can only survive by complete
personal sacrifice.
If your child was
critically ill, wouldn’t you give everything to save his life? Right now
the life of our children, our own lives, and the very existence of our
church, school, and our country is at stake.
We will have to study
the facts and have the honesty to face them, to study the true nature of
our godless enemy, and rededicate ourselves to the cause of freedom, and
then, motivated by the love of Christ, our Redeemer, and equipped with
knowledge, we can fulfill our God-given task in our own place in any
situation.
The struggle is going
to be hard and will become harder.
There is no easy way
out. There is no place for despair. Our battle is not hopeless for, if we
are on God’s side, we cannot help but win. We as Christians and as a
nation have to put out trust in God alone and completely surrender our
lives to Christ.
Let us be ready to
die for the truth so that we may live in freedom by God’s grace.

ECCLESIASTICAL
VERACITY
One of those mentioned in the film "Operation Abolition" as
addressing the students gathered to protest the hearings of the Committee
was the Rev. Canon Richard Byfield, Executive Assistant to Bishop James A.
Pike of the Episcopal Diocese of California. He also writes letters. In an
indirect way a slanderous letter concerning the Christian Anti-Communism
Crusade attributed to him has been brought to our notice. The Oceanside
Beacon of Oceanside, New York, has a columnist, Bruce W. Marcus. On January
26, 1961, in his column he writes, "I can only quote from a letter I
received from the Rev. Canon Richard Byfield, Executive Assistant to Bishop
James A. Pike of the Episcopal Diocese of California. He had seen a column I
had written in report on a speech in which cybernetics, a mathematical
science, was referred to as the secret language of the Communists." He
says, "Recently someone sent me a copy of the curriculum provided by
the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade. All the evidence seems to indicate
that this is a totally irresponsible group which is simply in the ‘anti-communism
crusade’ business for the money that is in it."
To the best of my
knowledge, Canon Byfield has had no association with the Crusade whatever. I
have written him the following letter:

the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade. All the evidence seems to indicate
that this is a totally irresponsible groups which is simply in the ‘anti-communism
crusade’ business for the money that is in it."
As President of the
Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, may I ask you to state the evidence that
led to this conclusion. I invite you to visit our offices in Long Beach,
California, Houston, Texas, or San Francisco, and examine our books,
inspect our audited statements and ask any questions you desire of the
personnel.
May I draw to your
attention the easily provable facts that the Christian Anti-Communism
Crusade is supporting thousands of individuals throughout the world who
are in dire poverty but devoted to freedom and Christ. May I indicate that
our representative in your city works long hours and gives unsparingly of
his time and energy without receiving one cent in salary. Is this evidence
on which you base your conclusions?
May I ask that you
refrain from making defamatory statements in the future and suggest that
an apology may be in order.

Christian Anti-Communism Crusade
ANTI-COMMUNISM
SCHOOLS
A wonderful but exhausting program of anti-Communism schools stretches
ahead. Those in the immediate future are the Greater Phoenix Anti-Communism
School to be held at the Westward Ho Hotel, Phoenix, Arizona, February 27,
through March 3; the Orange County Anti-Communism School to be held at the
Disneyland Hotel, March 7, through March 11; and the East Texan Freedom
Forum to be held at Tyler, Texas, March 14, through March 18. Later schools
are to be held in St. Louis, Missouri, April 24, through April 28; and
Miami, Florida, June 12, through June 16. It is not too late to register for
these schools. You will find them an experience that would change your life.
A most important new
venture awaits us. It is hoped in late March and early April to hold
anti-Communism schools in Jamaica and British Guiana. These will be
pioneering ventures of breath-taking potential. We need the interest, prayer
and practical support of every American. The Caribbean must not become a
Communist sea.
The situation in Latin
America is stressed in a letter forwarded to me from a University Professor
returning from a sojourn in Argentina. He writes:
"Esteemed Friend:
Ever since my return from Argentina (where I enjoyed a fellowship for
research in literature) I have been saving some remarks and materials for
your attention. It is true that I did travel to some extent in Chile,
Bolivia and Uruguay; however, the observations contained herein stem
largely from my Argentine experience. Now, Argentina, as you are aware, is
one of the staunchest supporters of the Western Democracies and,
officially, the most outspoken of the Latin American nations in opposition
to the Fidel Castro phenomenon. However, I was more than a little appalled
at the extent to which youth, and particularly at the University level, is
being indoctrinated by Soviet propaganda. In my estimate, we are already
losing the ideological war in Latin America. If something positive is not
done now, we may resign ourselves to the inevitable creation of an entire
generation of hard-core party-liners who will be the ultimate undoing of
democracy in this Hemisphere.
I am sending to you
by separate mail a number of vicious tracts of the kind which can be
bought in any bookstore in the vicinity of the Universidad de Buenos Aires
(enrollment, 70,000!) for a matter of a few pesos. I purchased these works
specifically so that you would have some tangible evidence to corroborate
the assertions made in this letter. All of these constitute scurrilous,
unvarnished attacks on the U.S. Now if they were on the same shelves
similar equally attractive and equally cheap books defending the U.S.
position or disclosing truths about the Communists I would not be overly
concerned, since the reading public would at least have exposure to two
sides of the question. Lamentably for us this is absolutely not the case.
The problem cannot be
overstated. The Russian Embassy in the tiny republic of Uruguay (once
traditionally a friend of the U.S.) has a staff of almost one hundred
employees largely engaged in turning out propaganda for the southern end
of the continent. One only has to count the number of Castro supporters in
that country to see how effectively the Russians have done their
work!"
This letter
stresses a situation we have pointed out time and time again. He suggests
that a team of translators be created to translate books outlining the
glories of America in sensational style and that these books be subsidized
south of the border. This is a project worthy of great support by American
business men. Will you rise to this challenge?
A LITTLE
CHILD SHALL LEAD THEM
The urgency of this need for education concerning Communism is shown by this
appealing letter from a 14-year-old boy:
"Dear Dr. Schwarz,
I would like for you to send more information on the subject of Communism
and what it is doing to the world. I have been particularly interested in
this problem and what it is doing for some time. I am a 14-year-old boy in
the eighth grade and hoping to be in the ninth by the end of May. I have
asked many people what Communism really is. I was surprised at so little
they did know. I fell that this is a subject that every Christian should
know about, and what it is doing to religion. I have read one booklet that
was entitled, ‘Communism – Diagnosis and Treatment’ which is very
startling. If God will only make us realize the stark truth before it’s
too late.

THROUGH IN THE ARAB WORLD
Peter Shadid, a brilliant student from the Middle East writes: "I
received a letter yesterday that my brother-in-law, who is a preacher in
Beruit, has been granted permission from the Lebanese Government to print
and distribute pamphlets or any literature about Communism. I am sending
next week the pamphlet ‘What Is Communism’ to Lebanon for printing and
distribution. We pray that God will use the printing matter for opening the
eyes of the readers to fight and seek the real truth. Will you send me new
material? Yours in Him, Peter Shadid"
The message, "The
Disease of Communism," is already translated and circulating in the
Arab world.

Dallas Schools to Teach How to Fight Red Threat
Freedom Forum Offers Material

The Dallas Independent School District
will launch a thorough course of study on ways to fight communism and its
threat, School Board President Franklin Spafford said Saturday.
This week the big
school district will begin a program which will include instruction in the
evils of communism. The Dallas Freedom Forum will play a major part in
furnishing materials, books, booklets, and other information to inform
students of the Communist problem, a school spokesman said.
No specific courses to
emphasize anti-communism will be offered, but the study will be worked in
with existing courses in social studies and possibly language arts and
others, Dr. Frank Williams, assistant superintendent in charge of
instruction, said Saturday.
"We are definitely
concerned about the dangers of communism," Dr. Williams said. "We
feel if the students do not know about its dangers, one day the Communists
may conquer us."
Close Screening
Dr. Williams said materials to be used for sources on the dangers of
communism will be closely screened to see that they are acceptable.
"Then we will
distribute the materials," he said. "Any teacher, with permission
from her principle, can use these materials. The Freedom Forum has offered
several pieces which will be used in quantity," Dr. Williams said.
Mr. Spafford said the
board and administration have given much study to the problem of informing
students about the communist problem.
"After a long
period of thinking about this, we believe it is a good thing," he said.
To begin the ambitious
study program the district will sponsor a speech Thursday morning at Justin
F. Kimball High School, 3606 S. Westmoreland, by Dr. Fred Schwarz, who
coordinated the recent Freedom Forum in Dallas.
Dr. Schwarz will make a
public address in the Baker Hotel Crystal Ballroom at 8 p.m. Wednesday, with
Highland Park School Supt. Frank Monroe acting as master of ceremonies.
Anther public speech by
Dr. Schwarz will be delivered at 8 p.m. Thursday at Thomas Jefferson High
School, 4001 Walnut Hill. Dr. W. T. White, Dallas school superintendent,
will be master of ceremonies at the Thursday night speech. The Dallas PTA
Council is also backing the appearance of Dr. Schwarz. Freedom Forum is
honoring outstanding groups of students at the Thursday night speech. An
appearance by Dr. Schwarz is also to be scheduled on KERA-TV, the
educational television station.
Contest Planned
The Dallas Freedom Forum is also planning an essay contest for students
on ‘American Freedom vs. Communist Enslavement,’ an official said. The
prize for the winning essay will be a full-year scholarship at the school of
the winner’s choice.
Literature the district
plans to use in its study of the menace of communism includes
"Communist Target–Youth," a booklet by the FBI: "Expose of
Soviet Espionage," by J. Edgar Hoover; "Communist Illusion and
Democratic Reality," by J. Edgar Hoover; "Communist Illusion and
Democratic Reality," by J. Edgar Hoover: and "Communism–A
Disease,’ by Dr. Fred Schwarz.
Other materials to be
used include "Master of Deceit," by J. Edgar Hoover, and
"What Can I Do To Combat Communism," a compilation of material.
Support of Key Clubs
(good citizenship organizations) will also be enlisted in the study program,
a source said.
School officials see
the program as a long-range one which will be fitted into regular studies.
INDIA
The great land of India must not be forgotten. One of the thinkers of that
country is Prakash C. Jain, who attended the University of Minnesota in 1952
and was later with the Indian Government Information Service in Washington.
He wrote a splendid article for The U.S. News and World Report of October
19, 1959, entitled "How Materialism Has Failed In The Foreign Aid
Program." He reveals a deep insight into the true nature of Communism.
The following letter speaks for itself:
"Dear Dr. Schwarz:
I received some of your booklets from your office in Houston, Texas, and
their perusal has convinced me that today you are perhaps the only thinker
in the West who understand Communism in all its dreadful implications.
I particularly
endorse your two points that Communism has nothing to do with the economic
conditions of the people and that nothing much can be done unless the
education system of the free world is reoriented.
As a matter of fact,
I think the first point merges into the second because the current
identification of Communism with poverty and democracy with economic
progress and a higher standard of living are the direct corollaries of
what is taught in our schools and colleges.
At any rate,
depending on one’s choice, the modern scientific knowledge can be used
to illustrate both the spiritual or the materialistic hypotheses.
I think that
Communism is the logical culmination of the Renaissance movement – which
made man the measure of all things. It follows that unless, once again,
you make God and Truth the measures of all things, you cannot, and you
deserve not, escape the catastrophe which seems to be so near.
What is needed is a
total philosophical revolution and a reinterpretation of most of our
scientific discoveries and formulas.
The peculiar thing is
that this materialistic outlook has completely distorted the vision of
America and of the free world – so much so that today your enemies look
to you like your friends and your friends look to you like your enemies.
For example, the U. S. had a 800-man establishment in Cuba, but with all
their research and study, they didn’t know the ideas impelling Fidel
Castro and actually helped him capture power. The same thing is happening
in a number of other countries today.
Indeed, the disease
has taken such deep roots that practically all the American-financed
programs in our country are actively, though inadvertently, working for
the propagation of Communism.
No wonder, America is
having trouble everywhere – including its own backyard – South and
Latin American countries and even Canada. But even this doesn’t seem
enough to open the American eyes. As a matter of fact, I have met a number
of Americans who think that they are winning in this Cold War.
While the U.S. gives
billions of dollars in aid to help development of poor countries, the
Soviets draw for them their economic plans, which whether they succeed or
fail can only end up in Communism.
While the U.S.
concentrates on sending arms to strengthen its allies, the Soviets
indoctrinate the youth who eventually form their armies.
While the U.S.
invites carloads of students from foreign countries for higher but neutral
studies, the Soviets try to win their spiritual and moral loyalties to the
Communist viewpoint.
Here in India, the
battle looks like completely lost. But still I and a couple more of my
friends would like to try. Unfortunately, lack of resources – and I
regret to say – non-cooperation from your USIS people and the American
firms and foundations – deters us from doing anything.
If you or your
friends can provide us with some resources, we would try to present the
real spiritual point of view before the people and bring out the fallacies
and dangers of Communism.
It looks tragic that
while America can donate billions for the success of what are purely
Communist programs, not even a few thousand can be spared for the people
who are sincerely dedicated for freedom and whose work, in the last
recourse, will only go to save America’s own billions. At any rate, in a
struggle between purposive Russian materialism, and purposeless,
discursive American hedonism, the former is bound to emerge victorious.

Seldom have
I read a finer analysis, and men of this caliber throughout the world must
be supported. We are grateful for what we have already done in India, but
much more remains to be done. We are hoping to have good news any day now
concerning the rotary press in Kerala. There are difficulties which need
your earnest prayer.
An Australian Baptist
minister, Keith Wilson, visited India including both Kerala and Andhra in
January. He writes: "For me this is the most significant and
fascinating experience of my life. I cannot put down on paper my impressions
of this wonderful, yet strange and heart-breaking country. I have seen
things which I can never forget. I have had experiences already which have
been life changing, spiritually enriching, and which have evoked every
emotional response possible. Since arriving at Kottayam, I have been kept
very busy speaking and surveying the work here. It is an abundantly
worthwhile work. Every morning I give a Bible study to 60 of the finest men
I have ever met. Most of them are full time Christian workers living in
abject poverty but with such zeal and dedication to the Lord that it shames
our western Christians including myself. It is a very humbling yet heart
warming experience to have this fellowship with them. Last night I spoke to
about 1,000 people and it is expected the crowd will swell to about 5,000 by
Sunday.
"George Thomas is
one of the most significant men I have ever met. I have a profound respect
for him for he is obviously a very formidable figure here in Kerala and is
greatly feared by the Communists. His newspaper is of the highest order,
produced under difficult circumstances. There is no question of the
inadequacy of the present plant."
Andhra
Concerning the Andhra State, he writes: "I arrived at Secunderabad
on Monday afternoon last and was given the usual tumultuous welcome. Of one
thing I am certain, these Indian Nationals can reach people no missionary
could ever reach and live under conditions which would kill a Westerner. On
Tuesday we traveled north about thirty miles, then walked ten miles into an
isolated village of about 200 or so homes. Most had never seen a white
person before, and I was an object of attention and amusement. They stared
at me all day long and, when I put on my sort pajamas at night, the crown
simply roared with laughter. I was impressed with the quality of the men Rao
has gathered around him. Wednesday evening we trekked out to another village
some three miles away. The Communists aim to visit every village
systematically in Andhra before the next election. With warm Christian

MATERIALS
The question is frequently raised whether the materials are available for an
effective course on Communism. The answer is a definite "yes." The
Government Printing Office has available a great number of very thorough
books describing the operation of Communism. Many fine books have been
written by experts in many fields. The book "You Can Trust the
Communists" which I have authored, is receiving exceedingly favorable
mention. The following letter is from a very respected high school
educational authority:

Recently I have had the opportunity to read your new book You Can Trust
the Communists. I believe it is to be the best summation of Communist
ideology, philosophy, tactics, and objectives, stated in language that

number of languages. Such authentic information on Communism is desperately

WORK IN
HAITI
In the heart of the Caribbean, near Cuba and the Dominican Republic, is the
land of Haiti. The language spoken there is French. George Westcott, Surgeon
of Ypsilanti, Michigan, and Vice President of the Christian Anti-Communism
Crusade, was formerly a missionary in the Congo where French was the
language spoken. He recently visited Haiti and has now gone there for an
extended period. While in Haiti he found a great hunger for knowledge
concerning Communism and prepared a simple tract which was published in
French. Tracts of this nature could be multiplied in Spanish, Portuguese and
flooded everywhere. Here is the report from George and the English
translation of the tract:
During a survey trip
into Haiti in October 1960, I soon discovered that many of the people were
deeply concerned about the extent of Communist subversion prevalent there.
Those alert to the situation and the threat it presents were eager for help
in combating this great evil. As a result, a number of addresses were given
to large and attentive audiences. In addition, a brochure was formulated and
10,000 copies made for a trial run. The supply was soon exhausted and now
requests are at have for 75,000 more copies.
Dr. Westcott plans to
return to Haiti at the end of January for more speaking engagements.
If Communism Comes to Haiti–What?
(An English translation of the brochure is hereby provided)
1. You
will lose your freedom. In China, under communism, the people are not
allowed to travel or visit friends. They cannon choose their kind of work or
place of residence. The government tells them what they must do and how long
they must work. They cannot change jobs or move to another place.
2. You will lose
your family. Under the commune system of China, all the men live in
barracks together. Some distance away the wives live in other barracks. The
children, even babies, are taken away and put in nurseries (homes) in
another place. A man may see a wife once a week for two hours, but he must
report all that was said and done. Parents may see their children for a
short time, once a week, but may show no affection. Children names are taken
away and they are given numbers instead.
3. You will lose
your church. Reverend Peter Chu Pong, from China, says, "The
churches now in existence are not Christian churches they are propaganda
churches allowed to operate by the Communists – None of the pastors are
Christians; they are all Communists – picked by the government to
indoctrinate the people in communism. The young people are all the property
of the Communist Party."
4. Many of you will
lose your lives. When the Communists conquered Lithuania, they destroyed
nearly a fourth of the people. In China, tens of millions were killed during
the first five years. In Russia itself, many millions were put to death. You
will receive the same kind of treatment.
The Communists win your
support by wonderful promises of peace, prosperity and happiness. They
promise a better way of life and at first many believe them. Yet millions
who have lived for years under Communism are trying to escape out of the
Communist-dominated countries, knowing that if they are caught by the border
guards they will be killed. If Communism is good, why do they flee at the
risk of their lives? One should demand a satisfactory reply to this
important question. Thus far the Communists have never given a reasonable
answer.
What Can We Do?
Every Christian should pray constantly to Almighty God that the red tide
of Communism will be turned back. The Communist says, "There is no
God." Those who know God should so witness by word and conduct that
others will desire to know Him.
But this is not enough.
We must inform others that Communism is in reality an atheistic,
materialistic program that will destroy civilization unless it is turned
back. The Communists are aggressive against God. We must be equally
aggressive and faithful to Him.
FINANCIAL
NEEDS
Our enemies and the enemies of freedom may snarl and sneer and accuse us of
sordid mercenary motives, but our friends and the friends of freedom know
better. You know that this majestic program we are preaching and practicing
costs money. You know our workers around the world must eat. You know that
as the fight becomes fiercer our needs become greater. If we are to do what
must be done this year, millions of dollars will be needed. Will you believe
and work and give to this end?
CONCLUSION
The Communists meet together and arrogantly announce their plans for the
culmination and the conquest of the world. Their agents throughout the world
become more brazen in their activities. The time at our disposal grows ever
smaller. May we dedicate every minute of it to the service of freedom and
Christ.
