CONCLUSION

COMMUNIST VICTORY AND ITS AFTERMATH
As I write this, the United States of America is host to Cheddi Jagan, Chief Executive of British Guiana. Jagan is elated following his recent electoral victory in his own country. His trip to the United States is part of a plan to consolidate his power and establish the second Soviet satellite in the Caribbean.

Cheddi Jagan – Communist
Cheddi Jagan is a Communist. This fact tends to be blurred by the customary references made to him in the press where he is usually referred to as a Leftist, or a Marxist, or a Socialist. The term, Communist, is seldom used. The fact that he is a Communist has been thoroughly documented. The British Government established a Royal Commission and produced a report called the Robertson Report. This report states categorically that both Jagan and his wife, Janet, are Communists and names other Communist leaders of The Peoples Progressive Party, the political party which Jagan heads. The State Department’s office of Intelligence and Research, in Report No. 4489R-12 described Jagan as a Communist agent. "The party’s leadership (Cheddi and Janet Jagan) are recognized as the representatives in British Guiana of the international Communist movement and have contacts with the Communists in the United Kingdom and in the United States." It would be laboring the point to stress the other available evidence that Jagan is a Communist.

When he is asked specifically if he is a Communist, Jagan usually dodges the question. He states that the People’s Progressive Party is not a Communist party. He says that he is a Socialist or a Marxist. Nikita Khrushchev also claims to be a Socialist. These are precisely the answers that Jagan, as a Communist, would give in his present situation.

The Present Situation
The August election in British Guiana was for the purpose of electing a government with full power in internal affairs. The British Government still controls foreign relations. Full independence will grant full power both in domestic matters and in internal affairs to the elected government. This independence is expected within two years.

Nature of Government in British Guiana
In British Guiana the system of RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT prevails. This system is not familiar to Americans. The chief executive is not elected by popular vote of the electorate but by the majority vote of the legislature. To obtain and maintain power, the chief executive must be able to command a majority of the votes of the elected representatives. When he loses majority support, he must resign and can ask for the dissolution of the legislature and a new election.
There are 35 elected representatives in the parliament of British Guiana. Jagan heads the People’s Progressive Party which hold 20 seats. The Peoples National Congress led by Burnham, which is predominantly a Negro party, holds 11 seats, while the United Force led by Peter D’Aguilar holds four seats. This gives Jagan a clear majority. This system will probably continue in existence until British Guiana is granted independence and Jagan can establish permanent dictatorial power with the aid of international Communist military assistance.
It is clear that until independence is granted Jagan can be defeated if three or four members of the PPP join the opposition and vote against him.

Nature of the People’s Progressive Party
The Poeples Progressive Party was organized by the Jagan and is under Communist leadership. Nevertheless, it cannot be classed as a Communist party. Its major appeal is to Indian nationalism, and it dangles the alluring bait of improved economic conditions before the people. The vast majority of its members are non-Communists and it has active anti-Communist elements within it. An understanding of this situation provides the basis of an intelligent program to defeat the Jaganite objective of absolute Communist power in British Guiana.

Communist Behavior
How can we expect Jagan, as a trained Communist, to act during this interim period? As a Communist he is committed to the philosophy of dialectical materialism. This philosophy teaches him that he must act dialectically. Dialectical advance is by a series of advances and retreats. It can be likened to the hammering in of a nail. No carpenter would bring the hammer crashing down and continue to push. When the advance of the nail is stopped, the hammer must be withdrawn. Viewed in isolation, the withdrawing of the hammer is certainly not advancing the nail but, viewed as a continuing process, the act of withdrawal is as essential to the advance of the nail as the downward thrust. Dialectical advance has a fixed objective but the direction of progress continually reverses itself. Frequently the goal must be approached by moving directly away from it. While awaiting independence, Jagan must approach his goal of monopoly Communist dictatorship by withdrawing from it. His two important immediate objectives must be: (1) To maintain his majority in the legislature. (2) To secure independence from England at the earliest possible moment.

Purpose of Jagan’s Visit
His visit to America is related to both of these objectives. Posing as a representative of constitutional government, he is asking the American Government for an enormous loan to improve the economic well being of the people of British Guiana. He secured two million dollars from the World Bank in the seeks immediately prior to his election. The major portion of the funds of the World Bank are provided by America. The America representative of the World Bank voted in favor of the granting of this loan. It was a contributing factor to his electoral victory. Jagan has now raised his sights and is asking America for $200,000,000 will no strings attached.
This is an enormous sum for a country with a population of approximately half a million. It is $400 per head. On a similar per capita basis, Brazil would be entitle to 28 billion and India to 160 billion dollars. When we remember that the entire sum suggested in the "Alliance for Progress in Latin America" is 20 billion, the magnitude of this request is seen.
While it is doubtful that Jagan expects to receive the full amount, there are important voices being raised urging that he be given substantial sums. The argument is the old familiar one that has reaped such a bitter harvest with both China and Cuba. It states that while Jagan is admittedly a Socialist and a Marxist, he may not be a Communist subject to international discipline. For this reason we should gamble and give him what he wants in the hope that this will woo him away from the Communist block into the ranks of free men. This arguments is complimented by the fear that, if we refuse, he will then be forced to turn to the Communist world. This argument is delusional. It ignores the central fact of the committed Communist character of the Jagans and that they will accept and use this money for Communist purposes.
If Jagan is successful in securing financial help in the United States, he will return to British Guiana with vastly increased prestige. His authority within the parliament will grow. It will be of enormous assistance to him in his important objective of maintaining the support of the majority of the representatives. It will also increase his prestige with the British Government and remove and hesitancy there may be about granting independence. In these circumstances the duty of responsible authorities should be clear.

Pathways of Possible Victory
All is not yet lost in British Guiana. There are forces and individuals both inside and outside the PPP striving for the overthrow of Cheddi Jagan. Prior to the election we worked arduously trying to inform the people of British Guiana of the nature of Communism and the danger that existed. Our team was led by Dr. Joost Sluis, orthopedic surgeon of San Francisco and director of the Northern California Christian Anti-Communism Crusade. He writes:

"From June 20, 1961, until after the general election on August 21, 1961, three East Indians, two other Americans and I conducted nightly meetings throughout the villages and towns of British Guiana, showing films, distributing literature, speaking and answering questions about Communism. Our presence was heralded in one of the local newspapers under the headline ‘Anti-Red Books Flooding B. G.,’ and the sub-title ‘Six Mystery Men Launch Colony-Wide Campaign.’
"We traveled throughout the country and were received with remarkable warmth and hospitality by all racial groups. Forty-five per cent of the population are the descendants of indentured East Indian laborers who engage primarily in rice farming and work on sugar estates. They are closely knit, industrious, friendly and often strongly nationalistic, retaining in many places their Hindu and Moslem customs and religion. It became evident that a few young people in practically every village had been thoroughly trained and indoctrinated in Marxist-Leninist teachings. Some of them would bring copies of the Peking Review or the Communist Manifesto to the meetings to engage in lively debate. Through the years a few known Communists had made regular visits as lecturers to British Guiana; a six month training program by Anna Greenwood at the invitation of the Peoples Progressive Party, for example, trained many young recruits throughout the country. Cheddi Jagan consistently brushed aside the question of his membership in the Communist Party and repeatedly side-stepped it by saying that the PPP was not ‘a Communist Party.’
"Many people were genuinely concerned about the danger of Communism but very few had a clear concept of the nature and evil of Communism. The occasional episodes of rowdyism were minor and infrequent at our meetings. This was in contrast to reported episodes of violence at a number of meetings of the local political parties.
"The evidence of Communist influence in the Peoples Progressive Party, however, was overwhelming. For example, one of the more articulate government spokesmen and minister, Brindley Benn, put it this way in the local Guiana Graphic, ‘You can stop tomorrow but you can’t stop Communism.’ On another occasion Mr. Benn stated that the PPP was the Party which believes in ‘the regeneration of mankind by the methods of science.’
"As Jagan made his triumphal entry into Georgetown, Brindley Benn announced, ‘Comrades and friends . . . the enemies we have defeated are the imperialists. We offer the hand of friendship to our fellow Guianese who unwittingly assisted them.’
"The elector and plural results of the election were both interesting and instructive. The Peoples Progressive Party under the leadership of Cheddi Jagan received 20 seats out of 35 with only 42.7 per cent of the plural vote; the Peoples National Congress under Burnham, received 11 seats with a plural vote of 41 per cent and the United Force with the leadership of Peter D’Aguiar, received 4 seats with a plural vote of 16 per cent.
"We have lost a battle, but we must go on to win the war. Our government’s attitude appears to be that Jagan is a confirmed ‘neutralist,’ not to be considered under Communist control. Only hours after his victory, Jagan met with Everett Melby, American Consul at Georgetown and discussed the matter of American Foreign Aid under the Alliance for Progress Program. Yet if we should make the assumption that he is a Communist, what could we expect him to do until he achieves complete independence?
"It is my sincere hope and prayer that catastrophe can be avoided in a highly dangerous situation. We need to find motivated people in every village to whom we can channel knowledge and support. A full time native Guianese worker is now spending nearly full time in developing such a program. He spent many weeks with us during our efforts in British Guiana. I have just received a long letter from him about his present project and needs. We want to provide him with a meeting place in Georgetown, a tape recorder, the minimal needs for setting up a small office and a small salary. In addition, he should have a station wagon or car to be able to travel extensively to the villages to develop trained personnel in every area. Other groups continue to merit our support such as the Defenders of Freedom and a number of individuals who are willing to dedicate themselves to the struggle."

Vision of the Future
If British Guiana receives independence with Jagan in power, what can we expect? Without fanfare, a treaty of mutual military assistance and cultural military interchange could be established with Russia and China. This could involve interchange of military personnel. Sizable contingents could be established on Guianese soil. This would serve the dual purpose of making Jagan supreme dictator with British Guiana and protected against external action. The full trappings of the Communist police state would be revealed. The concentration camps would be established, the political opposition arrested and silenced, and religious persecution would be developed. The population would be divided into small units with children acting as spies reporting on their parents. The execution of class enemies would take place. The flood of pathetic refugees would stream across the border. Should America threaten to intervene, the arrogant threat of Fidel Castro would be heard, "New York will become a Hiroshima and a million American babies will die." From the center of infection in British Guiana, propaganda and agents would stream into Venezuela and Brazil to critical areas of Latin America. The prospect is terrifying to contemplate.
Americans must not contribute to this end through ignorance, complacency, or treason. Let your views be heard as you write to the authorities demanding early and enlightened action rather than contributions to the consolidation of Communist power.

EATING THE COMMUNIST ELEPHANT
A young man remarked to his friend, "I am so ravenous, I could eat an elephant."
His friend scornfully replied, "How could you eat an elephant?"
Came the answer, "Bite by bite."
The Communist elephant is a monstrous beast, but we are attacking it bite by bite. We have taken small bites in Africa and many other areas of the world. We are now preparing two large bites – in Latin America and Japan.

Latin America Anti-Communism Institute
The situation in Latin America is critical. Here is a typical letter from Colombia:

"Dear Mr. Schwarz:
I read with interest your letter of August 1961 and the article on British Guiana.
What is happening in British Guiana is nothing new in Latin America. The communists are carrying out the same strategy and have been doing so for a long time, all over the continent.
The fact is that they have unified command, scientifical techniques that change continuously according to circumstances, and large human and financial resources.
You North Americans have been avoiding your responsibilities in order to enjoy your ice boxes. Your attitude to this problem has been this: "It is your local responsibility and your funeral."
But it is really world democracy’s responsibility and world democracy’s funeral. You North Americas can’t expect every little country in the world to stand up alone to Russian ideological offensive, strong in technical and financial resources. Now, we are not calling on you to abandon your very respectable policy of no intervention, we are only asking you to wake up."

The great need in Latin America is for literature giving information concerning the natuer of Communism and the true nature of America along with the recruitment and training of personnel who will fight courageously for freedom. A Latin American Anti-Communism Institute to achieve these results is imperatively needed. It should employ translators who work continuously translating the finest anti-Communism literature into Spanish and Portuguese. These must be supplemented by writers producing new material on current affairs. Modern printing presses are needed to produce this material in quantity and quality comparable to the material the Communists produce. Cheddi Jagan is asking 200 million dollars. This institute could be established for half of one percent of this sum. It is fatal to look tot he government to bring this about. Dedicated American citizens must seize the initiative, make the sacrifices, and produce the results.

JAPAN
The present battle raging in Southeast Asia is ultimately directed to the conquest of Japan which is dependent on Southeast Asia for her basic food supply. The student riots which stopped the planned visit of the President of America to Japan show existing Communist strength in this country. Practically no effective anti-Communist movement exists in the student world. We plan to fill this gap. The first step is to produce anti-Communist literature and make it available to the students. The book YOU CAN TRUST THE COMMUNISTS is shortly to be published and translated. The work is beginning. Every effort must be made to make it a movement of Japanese nationals and not of absentee Americans.

KERALA, INDIA
The rotary press, which we sought for so long on behalf of the newspaper in Kerala, India, has now been purchased. George Thomas writes:

"Dr. Schwarz, I don’t know how I can adequately express my sincere thanks for sending me the entire amount for the purchase of the Rotary Press. I have often wondered if this is not a miracle, what is? In my quiet moments, which unfortunately are not many, I allow my mind to review the past two years. Never had I got up without an overwhelming sense of gratitude to God, to you, and all the others who have stood with us so faithfully and constantly. Seldom can we find so few people doing so much in so short a time. I feel very humble in our enterprise. I look forward with confidence and hope for a great time of expansion and I do trust that you will continue to stand by us.
"We are making every effort to complete the installation of the Rotary Press by the beginning of November. November 14 is a great national day, being the birthday of Prime Minister Nehru. It is my wish that the first issue of our paper printed on the Rotary Press should go to the readers on November 14. If no unforseen difficulties arise, this should be amply possible.
"The next few months are going to constitute an important period in the history of India. Undoubtedly this is a most difficult period for the whole world. The scare of war is spread all over. In spite of the recalled neutral position that India is holding, there is a tremendous fear that war might erupt. If war does come, India knows that her position also would not be safe. The sudden determination of the Soviet Union to resume nuclear tests has made that country quite unpopular in the eyes of the people of India. At the same time I find a sense of restraint on the part of the national leaders as well as newspapers in condemning this act. However, nobody has come out to support it, not even the local Communist Party. The Berlin situation is not adequately explained and the justness of the cause of the west is not sufficiently presented. So thee is a lack of understanding on the above situation. We have tried our best to explain the situation to the public through articles published in Keraldhwani. But when you think about the nearly 450 million people of India, what precious little can we do from this southern tip of India?
"I said the coming months are going to constitute an important period for India because, the entire country is going to face the general elections. With the exception of Kerala and Bihar, all the states in India will be electing members to the State Legislatures as well as to the Indian Parliament. In Kerala we will be electing 18 representatives to the Indian Parliament. In all these seats the Communist will contest. From Kottayam a very close friend of mine is seeking election tot he Parliament as a Congress candidate. We shall be doing everything we can to get him elected.
"The Communist party will, of course, be fighting hard in all the states. They have a well-oiled machinery for functioning all over India. Their defeat in Kerala, of course, has unnerved them but they have not slackened efforts. We shall appreciate your prayers for wisdom to conduct ourselves and our columns to the best advantage of the friends of freedom.
"I was glancing through a report of the Press Registrar of India as to the number and circulation of Newspapers in India. My eyes stopped startled at one paragraph, which says ‘Besides the chains of newspapers already mentioned in this report, there is another newspaper chain owned by a political party in India. The Indian Communist Party, through its state and district committees, runs 26 newspapers. Of these, six are daily newspapers, 8 weeklies, 6 bi-weeklies, 5 magazines and 1 annual. Of the six daily newspapers, 4 are published in Kerala, one in Punjab and another in Bengal.’ This means, Dr. Shcwarz, that the communist party in India runs the biggest chain of newspapers in India and that the largest number of communist papers are published in Kerala. Besides these newspapers directly owned and run by the party, there are numerous publications which lean heavily to the left and give comfort and support to the cause of the communists and communism.
"After having read this report, I am once again reassured of the wisdom and God’s leading in starting our daily newspaper and its vast usefulness. I wish to thank you once again for the loyal and unstinted support you have given me and I look forward to enjoy the same much enhanced in the future also."
My heartfilled thanks goes to the many friends who, by their generous contributions, made this achievement possible.

ANDHRA, INDIA
Our Indian family continues to grow. The orphanage now contains 30 boys who are shown in the photograph. You may become a foster parent to one of these for $10 per month. We must not lose sight of the individual as we contemplate the mass. This is one of the many lessons our Lord taught us.
The number of workers preaching the Christian Gospel and exposing the Communist treachery continues to grow. These may be supported for $15 per month.

HYSTERIA AND SLANDER
One index by which we can measure the impact of our program is the stature of the individuals and organizations that participate in a campaign of slander against us. We make no attempt to judge the motivations that drive these individuals and organizations to their slanderous acts. We presume we know the motivations of the Communist newspapers, The Worker and The Peoples World. To them we represent the enemy who must be discredited at all costs. We are frequently puzzled by the motives of others. In many cases we believe it is due to a displaced trust in other alleged authorities and a failure to investigate for themselves. For this reason I am not unduly disturbed by slanderous attacks. Frequently it causes honest and thoughtful people to investigate and, when these investigate, we invariably make friends. As one of our great friends, Ed Ettinger, Executive Vice President of Technicolor Corporation, remarked to me the other day, "You must be the most investigated man in the United States." We welcome such investigation. Those magazines, newspapers and individuals who have published incorrect and often slanderous information concerning the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade include The Christian Century, The Reporter Magazine, The New York Times, Life Magazine, Harpers Magazine. On further investigation some of these have had the grace to acknowledge their errors and even make an apology. Among these are The New York Times and Life Magazine. In a previous News Letter I published the grossly inaccurate and distorted report on the Greater St. Louis School of Anti-Communism in the Sunday edition of the New York Times on April 30, 1961. The author was Cabell Phillips. I also published the letter I had written to them in reply to this inaccurate article. This letter was not published in the New York Times but on August 22, 1961, they did write the following letter which does make some apology. I thank them for it and hope that on any further occasion these will rectify their error not only to me but to their reading public whom they misinformed:

"The New York Times
Times Square
August 22, 1961

Dear Dr. Schwarz:
The New York Times owes you an apology. One of your friends and supporters, John Wl Wageman, 522 Valparaiso Road, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, wrote to us recently. It was not a very polite letter, but in the course of it he said that we had failed to answer a letter you had written to us about the article on the St. Louis School of Anti-Communism by Cabell Phillips that appeared in The New York Times on April 30, 1961.
We made an investigation and discovered that your letter was not, in fact answered. This was an oversight, because it is our policy to reply to every reasonable letter from a reader.
We investigated the inaccuracies that you claim were made in Mr. Phillip’s article, and, indeed, there were a few minor factual errors. We do not feel, however, that any fundamental mistakes have been made or that our readers have been in any way seriously misled.
We regret the factual errors, and we shall make every effort to see that they are not repeated if we have occasion in the future to write about your organization and your activities.

Sincerely,
Clifton Daniel
Assistant Managing Editor"

THE RISING TIDE OF PATRIOTISM AND PUBLIC CONCERN
The Anti-Communism schools have caught fire and are sweeping the nation. The recent anti-Communism School in Southern California marked a new era in the struggle for freedom. It was not, however, the summit towards which we are striving but a gigantic step higher. I feel at a loss to report the results of this school. What words can describe the millions of minds informed and hearts inspired? How can we trace the many streams flowing from this school through every department of American life – creating study groups, projecting patriotic programs, restoring religious faith? Statistics are cold things, but the statistics as revealed by audit of the school are truly thrilling. The audit was conducted by one of the largest American accounting firms and a copy of their report is available. How overwhelmed and thankful we are for these results. Our hands and hearts go out to the multitudes who worked to make it possible. The funds will be invested in our continuing battle against the forces of darkness.
As reported previously, the evening sessions of the Southern California School of anti-Communism were televised from 7:30 to 10:00 P.M. each evening. This was achieved through the sponsorship of the Richfield Oil Company and Television Station KTTV of Los Angeles. The results startled the television industry. It seemed that the whole area tuned their sets to the school program, displacing in the rating such favorites as The Untouchables and Wagon Train. A sequel to the Southern California School of Anti-Communism was the mamoth rally held in the Hollywood Bowl on October 16. The featured speakers were Senator Thomas J. Dodd, Congressman Walter Judd, W. Clean Skousen and myself. Scores of Hollywood personalities appeared to indicate their devotion to the maintenance of a free country under God and their determination to defeat Communism. The entire program was televised from 8:00 to 11:00 P.M. throughout the western cities of California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada. This was made possible through the generosity of the Richfield Oil Company, Schick Safety Razor Company and Technicolor Incorporated.
Many thousands cooperated and worked hard and selflessly to make the Southern California School of Anti-Communism so successful, I hesitate to name individuals because there were too many who merited the highest praise. I cannot fail, however, to mention the chairman, Patrick J. Frawley, Jr., Chairman of the Board of the Schick Safety Razor Company and Technicolor. His generosity and wholehearted devotion to the success of the school was an inspiration to other businessmen. It is impossible to assess the full value of all that he did, but he can have the satisfaction of knowing that his example has been an inspiration to other businessmen throughout the country.

ARK–LA–TEX SCHOOL OF ANTI-COMMUNISM
Following the Southern California School of Anti-Communism, we crossed to the Middle South where, in Shreveport, Louisiana, the ARK–LA–TEX School of Anti-Communism took place October 3-7. Once again through the cooperation of radio, television and patriotic businessmen, an entire region was reached and stirred. The evening programs were carried on the Party Line Program of the 50,000 Watt Radio Station KWKH and thousands of letters from the listeners were received. The television station also carried the programs in the evenings.
Youth Day was magnificent. With the cooperation of the educational systems of the entire area, hundreds of school buses brought 15,000 Junior and Senior high school students to the great stadium rallies.
Once again the success was due to the dedicated people who worked hard. Among these I can only mention the chairman, Addison J. Wood and his charming wife, Joanna, and the co-chairman, Dr. Womac, along with his splendid wife. With leaders like this, it is difficult to imagine any project not being successful.

NEW YORK AND WASHINGTON, D.C.
At the conclusion of our other scheduled schools, we are planning to concentrate all our efforts on the eastern seaboard. We envisage schools in Washington, D.C. and in Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York with national television coverage. As we work together these visions will become reality.

LIFE MAGAZINE
In the issue of Life Magazine, dated September 1, 1961, the following article appeared:

"Far-Right Revivalists
A new kind of ‘revival meeting’ serving the nonreligious ends of an outfit called the ‘Christian Anti-Communism Crusade’ is being held with full hullabaloo and political portent in Los Angeles this week. Like nine other crusades’ in U.S. cities during the last year, it is presided over by Frederick C. Schwarz, 48, an Australian evangelist gone secular. Schwarz preaches doomsday by Communism in 1973 unless every American starts distrusting his neighbor as a possible Communist or ‘consymp’ (Communist sympathizer).
"Schwarz tries to appear less extreme than the John Birch Society, and he publicly disavows Birchism. However, his local steering committees have often included known Birchers. Schwarz himself landed in this country with $10 dollars in his pocket in 1953, but he has built the ‘crusade’ into a $500,000 business. Having persuaded 41 California mayors to proclaim this week as an official ‘anti-Communism week,’ he now plans to take the road show on to New Orleans and Columbus, then tentatively, to Chicago, Washington and New York."

This article was obviously written before the school took place. It has been analyzed by a prominent psychologist who writes:

"To illustrate the use of brainwashing and smear tactics in the press, let’s take a clipping from one of the leading magazines in the United States. It consists of only two paragraphs, but so much brainwashing material is concentrated in these few lines that they will serve as an excellent illustration. It should be pointed out that no particular blame is attached to the magazine in which the article occurred, since most magazines published today can serve to provide similar examples. The paragraphs are obviously written with malicious intent; yet, we cannot with certainty say that the writer is a Communist or even a pro-Communist: he may simply have been brainwashed himself into feeling that what he wrote was ‘news’ and served to decrease anti-Communist ‘hysteria’."
Life Magazine must have been startled by the number of angry protests that came from every section of the community and the country. I have no way of knowing how many letters were written but suspect they would have numbered in the thousands. Many sent copies of their letter to the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade and in some the sting was in the tail with a climax of this nature, "Cancel my subscription and send the refund to the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade." Life Magazine itself published extracts from many of these letters of protest and one letter that agreed with their editorial. I would be interested to discover the number of letters and how many were favorable to the Life article. One typical letter was from a young airman.

"Sirs:
Dr. Schwarz’s message was simply that if you do not understand the nature and working of Communism, no matter how well-meaning and patriotic you are, you will be ineffective in combating it. You will not know how or where to launch an offensive to turn the tide of the Red takeover.
I attended every lecture given by Dr. Schwarz at the Southern California School of Anti-Communism, and at no time did Dr. Schwarz advocate mutual distrust among neighbors. He did say that the sin of Communism, of Marxism-Leninism, has been and is, world domination. Their methods are anything and everything that will further their cause. They move on many fronts, e.g., military, intellectual, political, economic, religious, etc., and that we must oppose them on each and every level.
If Life had listened objectively and reported honestly it would not have printed those loaded phrases and libelous comments about Dr. Schwarz.
As an amateur photographer, and a good one, I have always enjoyed the photo coverage in Life. But if it comes to a decision between the truth and Life Magazine, it will be an easy choice.
I believe Life will discover the truth and apologize.

A dramatic sequel was the appearance at his own request of the publisher of Life Magazine, Mr. C. D. Jackson, on the program of the Hollywood Bowl rally on October 16. This action speaks more loudly than words concerning the revised attitude of Life Magazine to the work we are doing. Mr Jackson stated:

"You have here with you a man who had dedicated his life with the zeal of an evangelist to helping disseminate that knowledge and therefore to helping endow our nation with that power.
"That man is Dr. Fred Schwarz and, like all dedicated evangelists, he will be subject to over-simplified misinterpretation. Regretfully, my own magazine recently published such an over-simplified misinterpretation. I know that you are not interested in our reasons for so doing, but I hope you will believe we were wrong and that I am profoundly sorry.
"I have read Dr. Schwarz’s book ‘You Can Trust the Communists to do exactly as they say’ and I can think of no more appropriate way to close my remarks tonight than by quoting from Dr. Schwarz’s book.
"My quotation consists of the concluding paragraphs of Dr. Schwarz’s book and I believe these are all important because they unequivocally refute the concept that the way for the United States to overcome its totalitarian enemy is to become totalitarian itself."

This action by the publisher of a leading magazine was unprecedented in the television history to the United States. It was an action that needed statesmanship and courage. We accept the apology in the spirit in which it was given. We hope it will spur many of the others who erred to a similar public statement. This is not time for mutual recrimination. With the deadly enemy attacking, we need all hands in the battle. We welcome our new friends.

YOU CAN TRUST THE COMMUNISTS
Distribution of the book YOU CAN TRUST THE COMMUNISTS to the libraries of the United States is now complete. This includes public libraries, Canadian public libraries, college libraries, religious libraries, and libraries throughout the world who purchase United States books. The total number is 21,081 and the cost of this operation including purchase, packaging, and postage of the books will be about $24,000. The book is now being adapted for use as a school textbook in a number of states. It continues to be a most powerful weapon in our battle against the enemy. Spanish, French, Japanese and Chinese translations are being prepared.

CONCLUSION
The success of the progress of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade has focused attention upon the Christian nature of our organization. Many have suggested that his becomes a barrier to cooperation and should be dropped. They argue that Communism is the enemy of all free men and that since this is a simple question of survival, all elements of religion, politics or anything else should be eliminated while everyone concentrates on the defeat of the common enemy, Communism.
These arguments may seem convincing but they ignore the nature of man. If free man is to sacrifice, he must have a motive for so doing. The battle against Communism demands sustained sacrifice which requires sustained motivation. We adhere to it with love in our hearts for all. We acknowledge the great Jewish heritage and the contribution it has made to mankind. We believe it has many future contributions to make. It would be a tragedy to annihilate both the Christian and Jewish motivation in a neutralizing unity. Our slogan must be "Utilize, don’t neutralize." We continue to emphasize our Christian convictions while we encourage others to express the dominant conviction of their hearts and minds. In this manner the anti-Communist forces may operate as a team without self destruction. We continue to proclaim with the Apostle Paul, "I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth." With humility we state, "The love of Christ constraineth us." With confidence in God and the power He gives to the individual we engage the enemy, confident of final victory.
