How typical this is
of the attitude of so many. They affirm the magnitude and malignancy of
the Communist peril. Their actions, as judged by their investment of
money, time, and energy, contradict their words.
It is this
intellectual dishonesty so characteristic of the otherwise honest and
practical American businessman that confirms the Communists in their
conviction of inevitable victory. Until each individual faces his personal
responsibility in a practical manner, the day of Communist victory will
continue to draw near.
Limited Role of Government
The government certainly has a heavy responsibility but it
nevertheless plays only a limited role in the battle against Communism. It
is amazing how many of the most articulate opponents of centralized
governmental power are prepared to present the government with a monopoly
of responsibility for the battle against Communism. Many believe, that
once they have paid their taxes, their specific responsibility ends.
The choice is between
two alternatives. The government is to be granted a monopoly of power,
this will finally result in complete governmental control of education,
foreign trade, information, management and labor. Few would desire this,
but they seem unwilling to accept the alternative of individual
responsibility and an enlarged program of anti-Communist activity.
Practical Steps
Each firm should establish a department of anti-Communism just as most
firms have a department of public relations. This department could have
the following responsibilities:
1. An
evaluation of the trading policies of the firm and the effect these have
on the Communist conflict.
2. An educational program on the nature
of the economic system of free enterprise, the democratic system of
constitutional government, and on the philosophy, morality, organization
and techniques of Communism. This educational program should be directed
specifically to management, employees, and the general public.
A program on the
nature of free enterprise alone will not be adequate to defeat
Communism. If a disease is to be defeated, its true nature must be
studies. The most devoted disciple of free enterprise can be deceived,
exploited, and destroyed by Communism if he is unaware of the deceitful
techniques employed by the Communists. Many a Cuban businessman today
regrets that he did not know Fidel Castro was a Communist during his
rise to power. When he discovered the true nature of Communists and
Communism, it was too late.
3. A research
program into Communism to discover its areas of weakness and to devise
programs to exploit these weaknesses. This is a normal business
procedure when face with an urgent problem. Money spent in research
customarily returns big dividends. Communism has one weakness that could
be fatal if effectively exploited. Human nature has a basic urge for
individual liberty. Communism must therefore come to power by deception
and remain in power by force. The most effective weapon against
deception is knowledge and truth. The only effective weapon against
force is greater force. There are many areas, where Communism is
advancing, where an effective program of education concerning the true
nature of Communism would reverse the tide. The danger is that so few
are concerned until open Communist power is established and knowledge
becomes inadequate against force.
Immediate needs
Such a program requires adequate financing and
trained personnel to operate it. It is difficult to imagine any investment
that could return greater dividends than investment in an effective
anti-Communism program.
While each business
firm should establish its own program, it should also cooperate with and
support community programs directed to the defeat of Communism. Such
programs include the anti-Communism schools being conducted in many cities
of the nation. This support can be given by:
1. Enrolling officers and workers as
student of the schools
2. Sponsoring educators, preachers and other influential molders of
public opinion as students.
3. Financial support.
Can Business Survive?
Communism is the implacable enemy of business. Either Communism will
be defeated or within a few years there will be no business as we now know
it in the United States. At present the second of these alternatives
appears probably. A sincere, intelligent, sacrificial program of research
and education is the minimum requirement to reverse this trend.

birth of Freedom, a new and deeper understanding of it; a new and deeper
dedication to it." –Abraham Lincoln
"YOU
CAN TRUST THE COMMUNISTS"
When the book You Can Trust the
Communists was first published, Captain Barnes said to me, "This
book will sell a million copies," I did not believe him. That figure
is not being reached. A paperback edition is shortly to be published. This
edition will retain for 50 cents. The initial printing is to be 750,000
copies. This is the largest printing of any book in the history of the
publisher, Prentice-Hall, Inc., Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. This
publisher has donated 200,000 copies to be sent to the Ministers, Priests,
and Rabbis of the United States. We are supplementing this so that a free
copy will soon reach every one of these gentlemen. Never in our wildest
dreams did we conceive such a thing would be possible. To the Board of
Prentice-Hall we express our sincere and abundant gratitude.
The Spanish edition
of the book You Can Trust the Communists has now been published in
Mexico City. The first edition is for the more select market, but we hope
to reach the mass market of Latin America very soon. We have purchased
3,000 copies of the Spanish edition for distribution to key individuals in
Latin America.
EDUCATION
UNDER CHINESE REDS
The United States is vilifies and the Soviet
Union praised in every area of the Chinese Communist educational
curriculum. This is reported by William Benton, publisher of the
Encyclopedia Britannica.
In the July 15, 1961
issue of the Saturday Review, Benton, former U.S. Senator from
Connecticut, says the Red Chinese "educational structure is riddled
with Communist propaganda on every level." Benton’s article
"Education in Red China" is said to be the result of a study by
a research task force he himself established.
A teacher in Peiping
school for factory workers, he cites, drills his pupils in arithmetic with
problems such as this:
"In the United States, the number of half-starved people is twice
the number of the unemployed, and is 5,000,000 less than the number of
people who have to live in slums. As one half of the number of slum
dwellers is 11 ½ million, what is the number of the unemployed in the
U.S.?"
In
another example, Benton tells of a Red Chinese history teacher teaching
his class that "American troops used ‘poisonous germs’ to kill
(Red) Chinese war prisoners during the Korean war." The Red teacher,
he continues, "will also explain that Soviet Russia extended the hand
of friendship by sending medical teams to help (Red) China suppress
outbreaks of bubonic plague."
"But all does
not run smoothly," says the former U.S. Senator. Many teachers, he
tells, look upon the spare-time schools for peasants and workers with
"something less than full patriotism." "One primary school
teacher in Hengyang burst into uncontrollable sobbing when she learned she
was to be assigned to a workers’ school. In Changsha, a number of
spare-time teachers ran away from their jobs one day and never
returned."
"In 1959, 64,000
college and university graduates, diplomas in hand, went directly to the
backward rural areas to assist local agricultural and small industry
producing teams. They were not individuals so much as they were ‘produce
units’ responding to the orders of their producers." Their future,
says Benton, "is a matter of fate in which they, like all of their
fellow graduates, had little voice and no real choice."
HOLLYWOOD’S
ANSWER TO COMMUNISM
The video tape of the three hour program,
Hollywood’s Answer to Communism, is meeting a great response in many
areas of the country. It was sponsored on a 12-station hook up through
North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, on Monday, December 11, by
Mr. Roger Milliken of South Carolina. The response was overwhelming. Mr.
Milliken writes:
"The response was absolutely unbelievable. All of the stations
involved have advised us that never in their history have they had such
tremendous and overwhelming support for any program they have ever run.
"Several of
the stations that turned down the program have since admitted that they
made a great mistake and have said that if they had it to do over again
they would certainly have rushed to accept. You will be interested to
know that after we had selected one station in Charleston, South
Carolina, to run this program, the other station there called us up and
told us that they would have to be included because they could not be
the only station in Charleston which did not run a program which dealt
with anti-Communism. We therefore decided to include them. Subsequently,
they were told by their ABC network that they had to put on the Bing
Crosby Christmas Show at 9 o’clock which conflicted with the last hour
of our program. Thereupon they asked us if we would not let them have
the program for the first two hours following which they would tell
their listeners to turn to their competitor’s channel to watch the
completion of the show. They did this and I am advised by our agency
that this is probably the first time in the history of television that
any one station has told its listeners to turn to its competitor.
"My office has
been deluged with letters and telegrams, the general tenor of them being
that they never thought they could sit through a three-hour program but
that it turned out to be the shortest three hours they had ever seen.
Secondly, they were enthusiastic about the marvelous presentation of the
subject by all of the main speakers and have written in and asked us to
have copies made of the speeches and also asked us if we could make a
film so they could take it to small groups and have it shown over again.
Almost without exception they have regretted that it was not possible
that everybody knew that this program was going to be run and have asked
whether it would not be possible to run it over again."
The
ministry of this program continues to grow and expand.
MORRIE
RYSKIND IN THE LOS ANGELES TIMES
Recently, Los Angeles held a week-long
anti-Communism seminar at its new Sport Arena, and a goodly host of
ministers, teachers, students, businessmen and representatives of various
organizations signed up for the all-day sessions.
The evening sessions,
featuring nationally known speakers, were televised, and those who should
know tell me that some three million people listened in nightly. At any
rate, I can honestly say that in my 25 years in Los Angeles I have never
known a local event that so completely captured the enthusiasm of the
city.
THE CLIMATE
OF HYSTERIA
There is considerable discussion in many
quarters concerning an alleged climate of hysteria sweeping the country.
It is customary to attribute the resurgence of the "Far Right Radical
Groups" to this hysterical climate. To many the deep concern shown by
large segments of the American people because of the awesome increase in
the Communist menace is hysterical. As is so often the case, it is the
victims of true hysteria who accuse others of their own complaint. It is
not hysterical for lovers of freedom to be concerned about Communism; it
is hysterical to be emotionally disturbed about anti-Communism. The danger
Communism presents is massive and real. The danger anti-Communism presents
is almost wholly imaginary.
"Left" vs.
"Right"
It is now popular to speak of the twin dangers–the danger from the
left and the danger from the right–and to equate the two. A survey of
the objective realities soon reveals the hysterical nature of this
equation. On the left stands the Communist menace. Since 1917 it has
enslaved one billion people. It is equipped with multiple megaton
thermo-nuclear bombs and the means of their delivery. It has hundreds of
ocean ranging submarines equipped to project the weapons of death on all
coastal regions of the United States. It has the economic product of one
billion people which it can use from the vantage point of monopoly for a
fierce economic warfare. It has 300,000 trained espionage agents
distributed throughout the world. It has a network of university training
centers to produce its technicians of subversion. It has an enormous
worldwide advertising and propaganda program, and it has a hardened,
entrenched, dedicated Communist Party to serve as its bridgehead in the
United States.
On the so-called
"Right Wing" we are told there exists a real danger from a
retired candy maker from Massachusetts, a few individuals with rifles in
their garages, and a physician from Australia.
To equate the dangers
from the left and from the right is hysterical and insane.
Faith in America
Another common accusation against the anti-Communists is that they
lack faith in America. It is the salesmen of the right wing bogy who
really show this lack of faith. The overwhelming majority of the American
people are sincere int heir devotion to individual liberty and the
maintenance of a free society. The so called "Right Wing" has no
gigantic, worldwide conspiracy to multiply its strength as the Communist
Party most certainly has.
HYSTERIA BY
THE BAY
Nowhere in America is the climate of
hysteria more evident than in the San Francisco Bay region as we prepare
for one of the greatest of our anti-Communism schools. It has created a
storm of dishonesty which has enormous ferocity. It makes honest people
behave like inveterate liars. It causes the passionate proponents of
academic freedom to demand that academic freedom be chained. It induces
the ardent advocates of civil liberties to deny fundamental civil
liberties to the anti-Communists and it seduces alleged Christian leaders
into programs of betrayal of Christian principles.
The opposition to the
San Francisco Bay Area School of Anti-Communism is organized and
articulate. Its weapons are half-truths, distortions, innuendoes, and
outright lies. It practices guilt by association, condemnation without
trial, and denies the accused the right to face his accuser. Charges and
counter charges proliferate in the press and on the radio and television.
Committees to oppose the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade are spawned like
rabbits. Over it all hovers the jibbering spirit of hysteria.
The Unprecedented Action of
Individual Church Leaders
A press conference was called by eight leaders "of the churches
in Northern California." They included:
Rabbi Sidney Akselrad, President
Northern California Board of Rabbis
The Rev. Ben C. Bobbitt
Executive Secretary of the Christian Churches of Northern
California-Western Nevada
Dr. Robert D Bulkley, General Presbyter
North Coastal Area, Synod of California, United Presbyterian Church in
the U.S.A.
Dr. Mack McCray., Executive Secretary
Northen California Batist Convention and Nevada-Sierra Baptist
Convention
Dr. Richard C. Norberg, Minister and Superintendent
Northern California Congregational Conference
The Rt. Rev. James A. Pike
Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of California
The Rev. Bishop Donald Harvey Tippett
The Methodist Church, San Francisco Area
The Rt. Rev. Sumner Walters
Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin
They
stressed that they were speaking as individuals and not representing any
organization or denomination. They wished to disassociate themselves from
any direct or indirect support of the anti-Communism school. As
individuals they sent out letters to the churches of the denominations. A
typical letter from the Rev. Robert D. Bulkley, General Presbyter, North
Coastal Area, Synod of California, of The United Presbyterian Church in
the U.S.A. follows:
Dr. Bulkley’s Letter
"To the Pastors
and Clerks of Session of the Churches of the Presbyteries of San
Francisco, San Jose and the Redwoods:
"Dear Friends:
"With the
announcement that a ‘school of anti-Communism’ will be held in
Oakland in late January have come requests for churches and individual
pastors to cooperate with and endorse the activities of this school.
Because of our concern, a number of other denominational executives and
I have prepared the enclosed statement regarding our views on the
Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, and the problems likely to emanate
from its presence in the community.
"Please
understand that this is no attempt on our part to speak
‘authoritatively’ in this realm. We ourselves have been led to a
conclusion regarding this activity by the evidence at hand. Any pastors
or congregations are, of course, free to support or refuse to support
the school and its allied activities. We do feel, however, that the
enclosed statement deserves your serious consideration.
"I personally
have certain convictions in this matter to which I would call your
special attention. One certainly is that I do not feel that my complete
and strong opposition to Communism requires me to support every movement
which purports to oppose Communism. Furthermore, I have complete
confidence in the ability of the FBI to keep its eyes on actual
Communists and a very great suspicion that those who suffer from
crusades of this sort are likely to be not Communists at all but people
of varying degrees of liberal or unorthodox or unconventional ideas who
become suspect under the impact of generalized fears of Communism.
Indeed, as I have said in another connection, I am persuaded that all of
the evidence with which I am familiar points to the fact that domestic
Communism is at an exceedingly low ebb at present and that the main
danger from this movement is from abroad. But I am also persuaded that
mere emotional opposition to Communism which fails to take into account
that, short of a nuclear war which will destroy us all, it is likely to
be around a long time has the potential of creating real confusion and
frustration and unjustified suspicion. Because of the very nature of the
world in which we live and of the reality of Communism as a power in it,
one of our very greatest needs is the establishment within our nation of
a climate which is largely destroyed by movements such as this."
"Sincerely,
(Signed) Robert D. Bulkley"
A
statement they jointly issued is as follows:
"No one can quarrel with the basic premise of the Christian
Anti-Communism Crusade–namely that Americans need to be aware of the
true nature of the Communist threat, as well as of their own American
heritage. However, it is certainly permissible to question the degree to
which an organization carries out its own aims; and they type of
"education" provided by the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade
has seemed of dubious value to many commentators and positively harmful
to others.
"Such
magazines as Time, Life, The Reporter, The Nation, Harper’s, The
Progressive, Newsweek, and The Christian Century have, in
articles devoted to the spread of Right Wing extremism, characterized
Dr. Frederick C. Schwarz and his organization as belonging to this
school of thought. Locally, the San Francisco Chronicle, in its
editorial pages, has made the same point. Leaders of both major parties,
including President Kennedy and former President Eisenhower, have warned
us of the dangers inherent in this point of view and in its widespread
acceptance. In short, it would seem that the Christian Anti-Communism
Crusade has been guilty of using anti-Communist motivations to promote
specific attitudes which are characteristic of one political point of
view. It is very difficult to identify any particular programs with the
Crusade itself, but most of the regular faculty members of the Crusade
are on record as to the view they hold. Among those which seem to us to
be most questionable are the following:
"1. Cleon Skousen has advocated United States withdrawal from the
United Nations unless the UN charter is re-written in such a way as to
make it an instrument of American policy.
"2. Walter Judd and W. P. Strube,
Jr. have called for an end to cultural exchanges, and have
characterized them as mechanisms for the importation of Communist
agents.
"3. Both
Congressman Judd and Dr. Schwarz have called for the end of
negotiations on any subject with the Soviet Union, maintaining that we
can never negotiate with the Soviets for to them negotiations are an
act of war.
"4. Senator
Thomas Dodd, by suggesting that there are in the State Department
Communists or Communist dupes, has cast doubt upon the ability of the
State Department to furnish leadership to the United States in the
field of foreign policy.
"5. Cleon
Skousen, just before the death of Dag Hammarskjold, said that the
congo is fast going the way of Cuba and China. The move is being aided
and abetted by UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold, whom Skousen
described as a Socialist with the dream of making the world one large
Socialist state.
"6. Dr. Fred
C. Schwarz, Director of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, has as
one of his announced lecture topics, ‘Why Millionairies, Ministers
of Religion, and College Professors Become Communists.’ He further
says in his book, You Can Trust the Communists, ‘The truth is
that Communism as such has little appeal for the poor, the oppressed,
or the exploited. The basic appeal of Communism is to the educated and
particularly to the student intellectual.’ Such charges, if
unsubstantiated, lead to direct attacks upon the more basic
institutions in American life. J. Edgar Hoover, for instance, has
recently pointed out that the Communists have been almost entirely
unsuccessful in infiltrating American churches. In view of this, the
raising of such suspicions has the effect of confusing those who might
look to the intellectual and religious leadership of the community,
and can be most destructive to our society in general.
"7. The
Crusade curriculum has consistently used such training aids as
‘Communism on the Map’, a filmstrip released by Harding College in
Searcy, Arkansas. This film, which has been repudiated by the Defense
Department and many other official agencies because of the
misinformation contained therein, makes the point that Communism today
is achieving domination of the entire glove with the exception of a
handful of countries.
"8. Speakers
for the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, including Dr. Schwarz, are
reported to believe that the American way of life is under attack by
fifth columnists operating under such ‘socialistic’ guises as
‘liberalism’, ‘the welfare state’, and ‘one world-ism’.
Since ‘liberalism’ goes undefined, such statements are further
invitations to widespread suspicion of American institutions,
particularly the churches and the schools.
"9. Despite
these specific positions, the Crusade as a whole denies having a
‘program’, preferring simply to call upon people to ‘fight
Communism’, to ‘roll up their sleeves’, to ‘be alert’ and
other such non-specific suggestions. This approach seems to us more
likely to produce frustration and fear than to produce intelligent
action.
"10. While
the connection between the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade and the
John Birch Society is apparently not direct, Fred Schwarz had been
quoted as saying: ‘You know, I sometimes get the notion (Robert
Welch) follows me around the country signing up people after I have
worked them up.’ Not unappreciatively, Robert Welch has said, ‘The
Fred Schwarz schools have already done a superb job of providing this
preliminary education.’
"For the
above reasons, and because of the strong criticisms these schools have
drawn from many fellow churchmen in communities where they have been
held, we have decided personally to take no part in the sponsoring or
support, directly or indirectly, of the Christian Anti-Communism
Crusade or any of its local schools or of any similar school which
makes use of the materials and faculty of the Crusade. While this is
obviously an area for individual decision, we thought that perhaps you
would like to be guided by the decision to which we have come as a
group.
"Experience
in several communities has indicated that, in the wake of these
schools, there has been a resurgence of attacks on churches, schools,
and councils of churches. While the crusade organization specifically
denies any such intent, it is nevertheless a fact that the spread of
the doctrines of the ‘Radical Right’ have had this effect
elsewhere.
"At a time
when America is faced with a dangerous and subtle external enemy,
internal unity is of the gravest importance. Any activity which
threatens this unity by adding to the climate of fear and suspicion
which already is abroad must be approached with the greatest caution
and discrimination. Good motivations alone are not sufficient;
intelligent anti-Communism demands a clear-eyed understanding of the
danger, and the ability to discriminate accurately between Communism
on the one hand and genuine movements for social reform on the
other."
Comments
It is interesting to note that not one of these gentlemen has ever met
ne, and I doubt very much if one of them has ever heard my speak. They
have never attended an anti-Communism school. To the best of my knowledge
they have made no effort to meet with me personally to discuss any doubts
or problems they may have. My own efforts to meet with them have been
unsuccessful. Their statement is an appalling morass of half-truths,
quotations out of context, and misstatement. I could think of many
adjectives that might be applied, but I select the one
"hysterical". By saying this, we cast no reflection on their
integrity and character.
The press conference
was called while I was absent in Seattle, Washington. As soon as I
returned to the San Francisco Bay area, I invited those signing the
statement to meet with me and ask me any questions they wished in the
presence of the representatives of the press.
I sent the following
letter to Dr. Bulkley and the seven others:
"Dear Dr. Bulkley:
I am confident that
we are in agreement concerning the magnitude of the threat organized
Communism presents to the continued existence of free government and
personal liberty.
It appear that we
are in disagreement concerning the most effective measures to prevent
Communist victory. It would be tragic if this disagreement was founded
upon lack of knowledge concerning the nature and program of the
Christian Anti-Communism Crusade.
The nature and
program of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade are not fully understood
by many people. This may be rectified by a personal meeting, where I
answer in good faith whatever questions may be presented to me. I invite
you to meet me at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, January 19, 1962, in the Embassy
Room of the Leamington Hotel, 19th and Franklin Streets,
Oakland California, to ask any questions you may desire and I will
promise to attempt to answer them as well as I can. The news media will
be present so they may hear both questions and answers.
I hope I am not
presumptuous in asking you to make every effort to cooperate. Conscious
as I am of the calls upon your time and energy, I believe this
discussion merits the highest priority.
Yours very sincerely,
Fred C. Schwarz, President
"Christian Anti-Communism Crusade"
The press
conference was held as scheduled. It attracted the biggest representation
from the communication media of any press conference in the memory of
veteran observers. It was marked by the universal absence of those who
had issued the statement. A number of ministers did attend and
divorced themselves entirely from the action of the eight signatories. The
Rev. Jack Wyne, Pastor of the San Leandro Baptist Church stated that the
majority of the ministers of the American Baptist Church of the area
repudiated the statement utterly. They considered it contrary to every
basic American principle. He summed it up by saying that even the enemies
of Jesus Christ gave him a trial before they crucified him. What makes
"Christian" leaders act like this? The plausible
explanation–HYSTERIA.
Seattle
The disease is infectious. It has spread to Seattle. It has infected
the minister of the Plymouth Congregational Church producing the hideous
syndrome of dishonesty and degeneracy revealed by his letter:
"News from Plymouth
Plymouth Congregational Church
Sixth Ave. at University
Seattle Wash
January 9, 1962
Dear Friends:
Some of you are old
enough to recall the Flu epidemic during the First World War. There were
no miracle drugs int hose days and humanity suffered unbelievable.
Without warning it struck healthy and sickly alike. Thousands died in
every area of the country. I recall coffins piled high on the sidewalk
out in front of the undertakers awaiting burial. . . . . We are
suffering a similar epidemic of the mind and spirit today. To our
community this week comes one who has denounced democracy, dalled our
chief officials "communists" and "traitors" and as a
petty dictator rules the organization of thousands who support him. This
retired "Candy Manufacturer" is not unlike a certain "Pater-hanger"
except for the mustache. The latter rode into power as a chamion against
Communists, too, a quarter of a century ago. Many of our people with
"good intention" will submit to his slander, his innuendo, his
falsification . . . . .Hundreds of invitations have been circulated for
breakfast and luncheon and dinner meetings to what is called "A
School of Anti-Communism" to be addressed by Dr. Fred Schwarz, M.D.
This gentleman has tried to get the Medical profession to support his
crusade. He posts as an authority on Communism and has in past years
done a bit of speaking before Service Clubs in the area. He comes fresh
from San Francisco where he has held a similar "school." This
week every major denomination in the San Francisco area is sending a
pastoral letter to its churches and ministers with urgent appeal to
"set straight" the record and counteract the tragic suspicion
and disunity which this "expert" leaves in his wake. A plague
is upon us. It is sowing its seeds of cancerous suspicion. They will
burgeon forth in a number of "front" groups with no outward
connection, but nurtured and supplied with limitless funds by such as
those who will be speaking to our citizens here in Seattle this week.
God help us, unless the miracle of common sense can overcome such
onslaughts."
When this
incredible debauchery of truth appeared, I called the author in the hope
that reason and Christian love might have some influence. He considered
that the statement that the San Francisco School had been held when it
would not be held for more than two weeks, was a "minor error."
When confronted with the fact that the San Francisco religious leaders had
laid great stress on the fact that they were speaking as individuals and
not for their denominations, he implied they were dishonest by saying that
this was simply a technical procedure and that his statement that the
denominations had acted still stood. He did make one peculiar revelation.
He said he had heard me speak at a Kiwanis luncheon and that I was very
good.
How hysterical is it
possible to become?

"Arequipa, Peru, S.A.
August 9, 1961
Dear Dr. Schwarz:
We greet you once
again in the Master’s Name from Peru. In spite of the fact of your busy,
busy schedule we felt that we should write since we are living in very
urgent times.
This seems to be more
and more accentuated to us here in Peru where the task looms before us in
seemingly overwhelming proportions. Time is running out on us and the
Communists seem to be daily winning. Of course this is not strange here in
Latin America where the Communists spend $100,000,000 (Recent Time
Magazine figures.) a year.
The early Church of
Jesus Christ was a militant, aggressive, positive moving force conquering
in that mighty NAME. Today it is evident what it is . . . simply another
accepted, understandable, human organization. The mysterious powerful
living organism aspect is no longer known. So it is with the comparison
between evil, enslaving Communism and the feeble, fearful, foolish efforts
of the U.S. It surely seems certain hat unless the faith and the
purposeful integrity of out founding fathers can be revived that we simply
cannot SURVIVE!
How we need
enlightened, aggressive, dedicated personnel of integrity with a purpose,
a cause to live for and proclaim. Dr. Schwarz, could you please send us
here tapes on your anti-Communism Class? Also more literature in English,
none of the literature in Spanish has arrived as yet. We have not as yet
read the "Midget Missils". God bless you, we pray always.

Dear Sir in Christ,
Glory be to God in heaven and on the earth.
Greetings to you and
your family. I received the Bible which you sent to me on the 12h December
1961. It was brought to me on Sunday, when we were in the church. I
presented the great gift before the congregation. We beseeched God to
encourage you to carry on His work fearlessly.
Sir, I cannot express
my pleasure in this my letter. If to say that, you brought the gift to me
face to face you would have known how glad I was.
Do not think that you
are losing, but be sure that, God the giver of all good things will add
more for you.
May the blessings
from Our Everlasting Father be with you and your family forever, Amen.
I remain, your brother in Christ,

SEATTLE AND
SCHOOL
I made a brief visit to the Seattle area,
January 9-13. Seldom have I seen such superb organization and enthusiasm
before any school. We held breakfasts and luncheons for businessmen,
ministers, attorneys, educators, doctors, dentists, attorneys, educators,
doctors, dentists, and women’s club presidents. Every meeting overflowed
the capacity of the accommodations. The evening rallies were magnificently
attended and responsive. One enjoyable meeting was held on the Campus of
the University of Washington. There was some opposition but it was
restrained and inarticulate. The Puget Sound School of Anti-Communism will
be held February 12-16, at the Olympic Hotel, and we anticipate truly
great things. The leadership is outstanding.
HONOLULU
Some of the controversy in the San Francisco
Bay region has overflowed to Honolulu stimulating interest and opposition.
We welcome the former while we answer the latter. This school will be held
from February 26, to March 2, at the princess Kialauni Hotel. Many of you
may desire to combine this with a glorious vacation in the Paradise of the
Pacific.

As the battle rages, there are many
encouraging things to report. By all present signs, the San Francisco Bay
Area School of Anti-Communism will be an overwhelming success. Since our
weapons are reason, truth and love, all publicity that directs attention
to the message must ultimately help. For this reason the most scurrilous
attacks do not disturb us unduly. As I write this, registrations for the
school are pouring in. Once again all evening programs will be televised
over television KTVU, Channel 2, from 7:30 to 10:00 P.M. We will see
miracle for freedom by the San Francisco Bay.
QUOTES FROM
ELTON WILSON
Australian Director, C.A.C.C.
Keith Wilson spoke with a Communist and the
following conversation ensued: "Are you an atheist?" "Yes,
I am an atheist." "Do you believe in the elimination of the
capitalist class?" "Yes, we will get rid of the
capitalists." "I am a capitalist. Will you get rid of me?"
"We will get rid of the capitalists." "I am a capitalists.
Will you get rid of me?" "We will get rid of the
capitalists." "Then you are a murderer."
This was Keith’s
final word and, although I did not hear or see this incident, Keith
informed me that when this particular Communist had it forced upon him
that killing classes finally involved the killing of individuals then the
thought became less nebulous and more crystalline and, even to a
Communist, such a thought was none too pleasant. The more I think of this
the more I am convinced that there is a major field of endeavor in winning
Communists from Communism. If we can but show them that, because of their
premises of evil, the consequences are also evil and that this evil
ultimately touches individual people, then I feel that some may be won
away. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but certainly worth a try.
QUOTES
"If we place
the Soviet Constitution and the American Constitution side by side, the
distinctions lie largely in our willingness to grant the freedoms of the
written Word as contrasted to their unwillingness to trust people with
these freedoms." –Michael V. Di Salle, Governor, State of Ohio
"We as adults
must set the example. By working together we will be able to deter
Communism and its threats against the free world." –Norman A Erbe,
Governor, State of Iowa
"The very
foundation of this great country rests upon our religious freedom.
Religion and the right to worship as we please is totally incompatible
with the Communist way of life." –Steve McNichols, Governor, State
of Colorado
"We are all
conscious of the emphasis that Communism places upon winning not only the
minds of men, but the minds and hearts of youth. All those who would
tyrannize must seek out the pledged as well as the unpledged. Communism,
it seems, is anti-church, just as it is anti-capitalistic, because the
church is a foundation of freedom to worship a power, a force, greater
than the state." –Grant Sawyer, Governor, State of Nevada

AROUND THE WORLD
Japan
Our Vice President, James Colbert recently circled the world. He
cooperated in the establishment of an educational anti-Communism movement
for the students of Japan. There is no more important work possible
anywhere in the world. From a relatively small beginning, we anticipate
the growth of great things.
India–Kerala
Jim Colbert visited George Thomas, publisher of the Voice of Kerala,
in Kottayam, India. He observed the preparations for the installation of
the rotary press that has been purchased. We have further assisted with
the funds for a building to house this press and for jeeps to transport
the papers and the increased circulation. This is one venture of which we
can be justly proud. It serves the cause of truth and opposes the advance
of Communism and promotes the Christian Gospel. It is truly an application
of Christian love.
India–Andhra
Jim also visited Devananda Rao in Andrha State, and he observed the
work of our fine colleagues there. He visited with the 25 young boys we
are supporting in the boy’s home. He arranged for the purchase of the
property needed to adequately house and care for them. He also arranged
for the publication of the tract "If Communism Comes to India"
which will be distributed throughout the state as the elections draw near.
British Guiana
The situation in British Guiana becomes more serious daily. The
thought of British Guiana as a supply base for the Communist lead rebels
of Northern Brazil should stimulate every thoughtful mind to awareness of
an infinite peril. Dr. Joost Sluis and companions will be returning to
this vital area very soon to fight passionately to preserve freedom for us
all.
Jamaica
A critical situation is developing in Jamaica which was recently
visited by W. P. Strube and where a program of work has been commenced.
These are but a few
illustrations of what we are doing in every corner of the world. Truly the
sun never sets on the work of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade.
"Dear Dr. Schwarz,
We are writing now to
thank you for the wonderful sacrificial work you have been doing to fight
Communism. It seems almost impossible that just six months ago we were
more worried about the Devilgrass in our Dichondra than the Communist in
our State Dept. We are deeply and sincerely sorry for our neglect and we
have taken, what we hope are, some concrete steps to rectify that
situation.
Larry is a mechanical
engineer and I am a retired musician with two beautiful babies, age 3 yrs.
and 7 months. We became aware of our complete ignorance of the situation
during your School of Anti-Communism at the Sports Arena in Los Angeles.
We caught a couple of sessions on T.V. and became interested enough to
attend the afternoon session on the final day. At that meeting we
purchased a copy of "The Naked Communist", "Master of
Deceit" and your book "You Can Trust the Communists". The
impact of those three books and the lectures at the school were enough to
make us realize that now it was up to us. We took your theory to heart and
have very seriously and thoroughly tried to educate ourselves so that we
may, in a personal way, educate others.
We believe, with you,
that education is the answer and we are enclosing a check for $1000.00 to
help you in setting up more schools across the country. We are
particularly hopeful about your plans for the East Coast. Since this check
represents a sacrificial sum in our income bracket we intend to frame it
in the hope that it will convince any "Doubting Thomas" that we
have indeed pledged our "lives, fortunes, and our sacred honor"
to this task.
Goodbye for now and God bless you,
Marian and Larry Landers

THE
INTERNAL VERSUS THE EXTERNAL DANGER FROM COMMUNISM
Frequently we are asked whether the internal
or external Communist threat presents the greatest danger. This is a false
differentiation. It is like asking whether the water inside or outside the
torpedoed ship is the more dangerous to its remaining afloat. There is one
Communist danger. The internal and external threats are linked as the
water is the ocean and the water inside the boat. To isolate the two shows
lack of realism.
WAKE UP!
It is imperative that Americans awaken; Be
informed and take enlightened action, especially at the polls, and in
letters to Congressmen, Senators, State officials, newspaper and magazine
editors, sponsors, etc. Knowledge + People + Action = Victory! To that end
let us Live Freedom. Defend Freedom and Extend Freedom. We must have
victory for Freedom.
Let us tell the whole
world that Containment is not our goal! It is immoral to acquiesce to
enslavement. Our Goal is Liberation – No American will rest at ease
while millions of human beings are ruthlessly ground down in slavery!
Not world Communist
Slavery by 1973, but world Victory for Freedom by 1965.
Unless we win this
conflict there will be no profits, no security, no freedom, no survival!
Win it we must –
Win it we will!
For in God is our
trust.
CONCLUSION
The battle rages. The fiercer the fight
becomes, the more ammunition must be used. We are spending sums constantly
as our program expands. We look forward to a period of growth throughout
1962. Following the Omaha Anti-Communism School, May 14-18, our eyes will
be focused on Madison Square Garden where this summer we propose to launch
the greatest anti-Communism campaign American has ever known. We are
speechless with wonder at what God has enabled us to do. Our eyes grow dim
and hearts melt as we think of the many friends we have made, the loyalty
and love they have showered upon us, and the sacrifices they continue to
make to enable us to carry on this work. We are confident that their
friendship and sacrifice will increase during 1962 and that many new
friends will be won. There can be no truce in this battle. Please send us
the most generous contribution you can give. We promise to use it along
with all the energy and devotion we have for our common cause, the defeat
of merciless, atheistic Communism; the preservation of individual liberty,
and the proclamation of the pure Gospel of God’s love revealed in Christ
and redemption to all mankind.
Yours very sincerely,
Fred Schwarz, President
Christian Anti-Communism Crusade
