CONCLUSION

THE ASSASSIN’S ACCOMPLICE – MARXIST IDEOLOGY
Words cannot convey the chock, sadness, horror, and anger that engulfed millions throughout the world when they heard the news of the savage assassination of the 35th president of the United States, John F. Kennedy. The sorrow was not confined to the citizens of the United States but was present everywhere. Australians felt an intense personal loss as illustrated by this paragraph from the letter of my daughter, Rosemary.
"I couldn’t sleep on Saturday night and felt depressed all Sunday. I was fighting tears all through church. Everyone seemed to be genuinely upset. I don’t think that the murder of anyone else in the world would have caused such widespread and sincere sympathy."
Attention immediately focused upon the character of the man who planned and consummated this vile deed. What was his motive? Was he alone in planning and executing the crime or did he have accomplices?
Was this the act of a deranged individual influenced and stimulated by the emotional climate of his environment or was it part of an organized conspiracy with clearly conceived goals?

While the answer to many questions remains speculative, the character, background and ideology of the assassin is a matter of record and reveals clearly that he did have an active accomplice in the crime, "Marxist Ideology". To a believer in the Marxist philosophy of violence and the Leninist doctrine of imperialism, such a crime could appear necessary and beneficent.

Violence
Marxism-Leninism glorifies violence. This is apparent from reading Lenin’s textbook "The State and the Revolution" which is now the world’s most translated book. Since the Communists are spending so much money and energy to translate and distribute it throughout the world, it must be considered important and up-to-date. Lenin writes:
"In the same work of Engels, there is also a disquisition on the significance of a violent revolution. The historical analysis of its role becomes, with Engels, a veritable panegyric (song of praise) on violent revolution.

"Here is Engel’s argument:
"‘. . . .That force, however, plays another role (other than that of a diabolical power) in history, a revolutionary role; that, in the words of Marx, it is the midwife of every old society which is pregnant with the new; that it is the instrument with whose aid social movement forces its way through and shatters the dead, fossilised political forms – of this there is not a word in Herr Duhring. It is only with sighs and groans that he admits the possibility that force will perhaps be necessary for the overthrow of the economic system of exploitation – unfortunately! Because all use of force, forsooth, demoralises the person who uses it. And this is in spite of the immense moral and spiritual impetus which has resulted from every victorious revolution! And this in Germany, where a violent collision – which indeed may be forced on the people – would at least have the advantage of wiping out the servility which has permeated the national consciousness as a result of the humiliation of the Thirty Year’s War. And this parson’s mode of thought – lifeless, insipid and impotent – claims to impose itself on the most revolutionary party which history has ever known?’"
Pages 18 and 19, International Publishers edition.
It is clear that classical Marxism-Leninism considers the use of violence positive and desirable. It does not regard violence as an unfortunate necessity forced upon them by the enemy. The idea that violence will be used with reluctance and only when inescapable is described as a "parson’s mode of thought – lifeless, insipid and impotent."
This same thought is brought out by Lenin and Engels in Lenin’s book "The Proletarian Revolution and the Renegade Kautsky." Lenin quotes with approval the statement of Engels, "Have these gentlemen ever seen a revolution? A revolution is certainly the most authoritarian thing there is; it is the act whereby one part of the population imposes its will upon the other part by means of rifles, bayonets and cannon – authoritarian means, if such there be at all; and if the victorious party does not want to have fought in vain, it must maintain this rule by means of the terror which its arms inspire in the reactionaries. Would the Paris Commune have lasted a single day if it had not made use of this authority of the armed people against the bourgeois? Should we not, on the contrary, reproach it for not having used it freely enough?" Proletarian Revolution and the Renegade Kautsky, Foreign Languages Publishing House – Moscow edition. Page 27.

The Leninist Doctrine of Violence
While Marx, Engels and Lenin advocate violence, Lenin indicates clearly how it should be used and instructs the Communists to refrain from assassination in a stable Capitalist country and to concentrate upon violence involving a group of people. In revolutionary circumstances, however, political assassination becomes an accepted norm of conduct while class liquidation should follow a successful revolution. The official Leninist position towards assassination is made clear by the following statement from Lenin’s classical work "LEFT-WING Communism, an Infantile Disorder."
"Secondly, this party (the Social-Revolutionary Party) considered itself to be particularly ‘revolutionary,’ or ‘Left,’ because of its recognition of individual terror, assassination – a thing which we Marxists emphatically rejected. Of course, we rejected individual terror only on grounds of expediency."
Lenin considered assassination inexpedient and advocated groups violence of the type that met Vice President and Mrs. Nixon during their tour of Venezuela. However, in exceptional circumstances, assassination could be considered expedient as illustrated by the Communist assassination of Leon Trotsky in Mexico City.

Pertinent Marxist-Leninist Doctrine
1) The United States is the world’s great monopolistic Imperialism.
2) The President of the United States is the personification of imperialistic exploitation.
3) Violence is virtuous.

Here is how American Communists regard their country:

Communist Version of America
The 81 Communist Part statement describes Americanism imperialism, ". . the greatest international exploiter, the center of world reaction, the chief bulwark of modern colonialism, the international gendarme, the main force of aggression and war, and the enemy of the people of the world."
The American Communist Party reinforces this definition by the categorical statement "All this is unquestionably true." Page 14, Political Affairs (Theoretical organ of the Communist Party, U.S.A.), October, 1963.
If we follow this teaching, America is the great enemy of mankind. The president is the personification of imperialist exploitation. Violence is historically creative and would be used virtuously to relive suffering mankind of its great exploiter. These beliefs create the assassin.
It is possible that he was acting as a pure believer and was not subject to Communist Party discipline or direction. In Communist terms he would be a "Left-Wing Deviationist."
Recognition of the role of Marxist-Leninist ideology will go a long way towards the formulation of a positive plan to present similar future tragedies. The evil nature of these doctrines must be exposed by reason and logic and every effort made to consign Marxism-Leninism along with Nazism to a museum for the horrors of history.

Indirect Communist Assassination
While Leninism discourages assassination by the Communist Party itself, it does not discourage assassination by the members of organizations which are influenced or controlled by the Communist Party. The Puerto Rican Nationalists made a determined attempt to assassinate President Truman. On another occasion they wounded members of the Congress of the United States. The Puerto Rican Nationalist movement is not a Communist movement but it has been and is influenced by the leaders of the American Communist Party. The Communist-directed "Front of National Liberation" has made repeated attempts to assassinate the president and other political leaders in Venezuala.
The Fair Play for Cuba Committee is not a branch of the Communist Party but an organization influenced and largely controlled by the Communists. Its members could participate in assassination attempts without infringing Leninist policy. The assassin considered himself a representative of the Fair Play for Cuba Committee. Castro had previously threatened the personal security of American leaders if they attempted to overthrow the Communist regime in Cuba.
If Communism continues to advance in Latin America, we must expect repeated assassination attempts on the lives of American leaders. This is a gloomy prospect indeed.

Hymn of Hate
When the news of the president’s murder was announced, a hymn of hate burst forth and engulfed the land. The remarkable thing is that the tirade was directed against a large group of innocent American citizens and not against the murderer and his philosophy. A vicious and continuous attack was made upon an unspecified group of people called "right wing extremists", who were accused of creating a "climate of hatred" which by some peculiar twist of logic, became the cause of the murder.
When the evidence became completely unanswerable that the murder was the work of a Marxist who had planned it very carefully and executed it ruthlessly, the savage attack on "right wing extremism" continued and the fashionable statement was that the murder was due to extremism by both the right and the left. The inference was that the speaker was completely separate from both groups and therefore lacked personal responsibility for the crime and was, of course, devoid of so-called "hate". Sometimes it was difficult to escape the conclusion that "they did protest too much" and that they were actually disseminating the hate they professed to abhor.
Extensive literature has recently been written attacking a phenomenon called "right-wing extremism". A large number of American citizens, including Barry Goldwater, have been included in this classification. Most books and articles written on the "right-wing extremists" have also included Dr. Fred Schwarz and the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade. The statement linking "right-wing extremism" with the creation of the climate that allegedly generated the crime was a sordid attack on the individuals and organizations previously classified and who were detested and possibly "hated" by the speakers and writers. These individuals and organizations were thus most effectively and viciously slandered. It is little wonder that Senator Goldwater received a vast quantity of hate-filled mail and that Senator Tower and his family were vilified and threatened.
It appeared that certain individuals had their razors honed and their hatchets raised ready for the attack and that they were disappointed when the evidence proved that the murderer was a Marxist with no relationship to the "right wing." The attempt of the Communist press to continue the libel and to blame the assassination on the right wing is understandable, but a similar attitude on the part of responsible American leaders appears inexplicable.

The City of Dallas
Special significance was placed on the fact that the murder took place in Dallas, Texas, which was described as the center of "right-wing extremism". This is the ultimate in irrationality. If ever so-called "right-wing extremist" in Dallas has been imprisoned for the last two years, it would have had not bearing on the commission of the crime.
Like all other cities, Dallas has its good and bad elements, but it was unfortunate in that the assassin chose it as the scene of his crime. There is little correlation between noisy and ill-mannered behavior at political gatherings and cold-blooded, planned murder. This is well illustrated by Australia where heckling, egg and tomato throwing, and similar conduct have been frequent in political rallies, bu there has never been a case of political assassination. Dallas is a very fine city with citizens of the highest character, industry, and patriotism, and it deserves sympathy because it was chosen by the assassin rather than general condemnation.

The Ugly Alternative
If the assassin had not been caught, the assumption that it was the work of some "right-wing extremist" would have taken the character of an unquestionable fact. The resultant bitterness, persecution and possibly violence can well be imagined. When there is no evidence it is so easy to take things for granted.
A little less than two years ago the Communist Party headquarters in Los Angeles was bombed. The identity of the individual or individuals responsible has never been discovered. The chairman of the Communist Party of California, Dorothy Healy, immediately announced that this was the result of the Southern California School of Anti-Communism. When asked to comment on this, I expressed horror at the bombing but indicated I had no knowledge whatever of who was responsible. I also said that if Dorothy Healy did know who was responsible, that fact in itself was suspicious.
The Los Angeles homes of a Lutheran clergyman and a Jewish Rabbi were bombed. Again the criminals have never been discovered. None the less, CBS News was able to present a program "Thunder on the Right" which attributed the bombing to "right-wing extremists" and viciously slandered many American citizens.
It is quite conceivable that such acts could be organized by Communists or sympathizers knowing that the blame would be immediately be placed on the "right wing." The only just course is to await the evidence before allotting the guilt.
The assassination of President Kennedy was a dreadful crime, but the anguish is not alleviated by slander of millions of sincere, patriotic, devoted American citizens who mourn sincerely the death of their president.

A TASTE OF VICTORY
The film "A Taste of Victory" is a magnificent portrayal of the most effective work the Crusade accomplished in Kerala, India. To realize its full potential, it must be widely shown. The typical reaction is revealed by this statement of Elton Wilson, Director of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade of Australia.
"At each of my meetings I showed ‘A Taste of Victory’. It is magnificent. Speaking of course as a layman, the photography is very good; the continuity and commentary are good; Jim does not fail to impress; it is the right length; it contains sufficient positive appeal to scotch the arguments of the puerile and it associates the Indian work with the C.A.C.C. Every comment which I have heard has been favorable and I have prepared a letter for distribution to the Sydney Ministers suggesting that they make use of the film."
Anyone can render a real service by arranging to show it to church groups, clubs, schools or rallies. The ideal financial arrangement is to receive an offering for the work of the Crusade following the screening. If this is not practical, the film may be obtained for a small rental or, in special circumstances, free.

MULTIPLE COMMUNIST ATTACK IN LATIN AMERICAN

BRITISH GUIANA
One battle has been won in British Guiana, but the Communist attack on that country is not finally defeated. A conference to discuss independence for British Guiana was held in London in early November. Communist Prime Minister Cheddi Jagan had asked the British Government to impose a solution and he promised to abide by their decision.
The decision of the government under the new Prime Minister of England, Sir Alex Douglas-Home, was that independence would be postponed until another election had been held under proportional representation. The two anti-Communist political parties representing 58 per cent of the population had been demanding this.
In spite of his promise to abide by the decision of the British Government, Cheddi Jagan is furious.
He has turned to threats of violence and armed insurrection to assure Communist power. His wife, an American-born Communist Janet Jagan, who is a friend of the Communist Prime Minister, Mao Tse-tung, and is minister for home affairs in British Guiana, has urged the people to rise up and fight and die.
The decision of the British Government is welcome news both to the British Guianese, who do not want to live under complete Communist dictatorship, and to those who do not want a Communist military base established on the South American Continent. It would be a tragic mistake, however, to assume that the battle is over and to relax.
It would be a catastrophe if Cheddi Jagan was returned to power under proportional representation. While he has a monopoly of the use of radio and government transportation, and while his party has many paid organizers and is helped with Russian funds and Cuban training and personnel, this remains possible. The anti-Communist forces must be supplied with the vehicles, films, and literature needed and it is more urgent than ever that contributions be given to make this possible. We have received only a small percentage of the $100,000 urgently needed.
It is interesting to note that many citizens of British Guiana were incensed by the failure of the Prime Minister to pay their last respects to the late President Kennedy by signing the book of mourning in the U.S. Consulate. This is revealed by the accompanying article.
"Why didn’t he sign? Premier insults America afresh
"Thousands of Guianese filed into the United States Consulate on Monday last to pay their last respects to the late President Kennedy by signing the Book of Mourning.
"But the Premier of Guiana, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, was not there. Where was he? He was reported to be on the Corentyne haranguing rice farmers into opposing the Sandys plan.
"This act of discourtesy was done by a Premier whose government has persistently vilified President Kennedy and the American nation. Was it an accident that the Premier was not there?
      "Deliberate.
"We say so. It couldn’t be. It was a deliberate insult to the American nation. When Marxist Cheddi Jagan left Georgetown for the Corentyne on Saturday morning the President had already been slain. Marxist Jagan knew that the United States Consulate would observe certain formalities for the President.
"Since Marxist Jagan knew, why did Marxist Jagan escape to the Cerentyne? Because Marxist Jagan believes in the tenets of communism." —The Sun, Vol. 3, No. 36 Saturday, November 30, 1963.

BRAZIL
In the entire history of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade I have seldom received such encouraging news as the information that the Portuguese edition of the book "You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists)" is presently being serialized in the major newspapers of Brazil. Who can estimate the harvest for freedom that will be reaped from this?
The importance the Communists attach to the university students is revealed by this statement of a Communist leader in reply to one who doubted Communist conquest in Brazil:

"But we know that we will conquer Brazil without a doubt. And we are not in a hurry because time is working for us. Don’t you see that we are not worried about adults who held fast to capitalism and are rooted in religious superstition? We are winning youth whose spirits are open and who understand the truth of socialism. The visible results are nothing compared to what will come later. The youth of today, principally the students, will be the teachers, doctors, engineers, lawyers, judges and politicians of tomorrow. And you see that almost all students are actually Communists or are being won, so that one day suddenly you will wake up to see Brazil with a Communist regime."

Front Line Reaction
We have also received the following letter from a Fransciscan Priest in Brazil:

"Dear Dr. Schwarz:
"I’m mailing this note to Prentice Hall Inc. and hoping it’ll reach you soon.
"I’m a Fransciscan Priest stationed right now in Ceres-Goias, Brazil. I’ve read and re-read your book ‘You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists)’ and found it ‘the best’ in the business.
"Also, Doc, I’m preparing a course (in fact, started) for the 4th year high school and our Junior College here in Ceres. I’m using your book as an outline, so thanks for writing that book.
"Also, Doctor, have you ever thought of having it translated into Portuguese? I think it would be a help down here in Brazil as you set forth and explain clearly about Communism.
"Once again, Doc, nice going–keep up the good work, don’t get discouraged and a sincere ‘God bless you’.

"Father Mario Foley, OFM"

We have sent Father Mario Foley copies of the Portuguese literature available and hope to cooperate with him to secure the widest distribution.

PUERTO RICO
The serious situation in Puerto Rico is revealed by the following letter received from a missionary.
"The communists are working hard in Puerto Rico under the name of ‘Independence.’ They have their rallies and shout their slogans the same as they did in Cuba ‘Patria or Muerte, Cuba si yanquis no, Puerto Rico si yanquis no, and we will overcome.’ They say ‘Down with American imperialism. We want freedom.’ They broadcast their rallies and we tune in and listen to it all to see what they are doing. One of their secretaries lives near us and I visit their home. I told them how the communists imprisoned our native Cuban minister and arrested him in the pulpit.
"The little booklet called, ‘When Communism Comes to America’ in Spanish would be wonderful to distribute among the young people. We could distribute a few hundred of them if we had them. I wish I had some money to send you. We are struggling to make ends meet. The good Lord has provided the most necessary things for which we are thankful."
Communism in Puerto Rico is a cause for special concern for the following reasons: 1) the Puerto Rican nationalists have repeatedly tried to assassinate American statesmen, 2) Puerto Rico is ideally suited for the infiltration of Cuban Communist agents into the United States.

Shrine Rally
A great SAVE SOUTH AMERICA rally was held in the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on the evening of December 3. This rally had a special poignancy because of its proximity to the date of the assassination of President Kennedy. It was felt that no higher tribute could be paid to the President than a sincere attempt to halt Communist advance in South America as such an advance will certainly lead to further tragedies in this land. The speakers at the rally were Raymond Joseph of Haiti, Doris Wood and Dr. Fred Schwarz, and great emphasis was laid on British Guiana, Brazil, and the university students of Latin America.

Fund-Raising Banquet in San Franscisco
A very successful $50-a-plate fund-raising banquet was held in the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco on Tuesday, November 19. Pat Boone sang patriotic songs to the music of the orchestra conducted b Ralph Carmichael. Herbert Philbrick and Dr. Fred Schwarz were the speakers and an enthusiastic crown of 400 attended. Our San Francisco friends plan to make this an annual event.
Successful fund-raising banquets have been conducted in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Other cities where there are a number of devoted friends of freedom and the Crusade may consider the project of organizing a similar banquet in 1964. This is one way in which businessmen and other leaders may be recruited for the cause.
We realize that many keen supporters and workers simply cannot afford $50. For this reason we open the doors at cost to all who wish to attend provided they accept the moral responsibility to contribute the remainder of the $50 if and when circumstances permit. This is purely a moral commitment as no records are kept by the Crusade and nothing is signed. The continuing response had shown once again the high quality of our friends and that faith in them is not misplaced.

Shocking Predicament of the Universities of Latin America
The Predicament in which even Catholic universities find themselves when confronted by skillful Communist infiltration is well illustrated by this report by an American missionary nun from Arequipa, Peru.
"Communism had infiltrated all the national universities of the country, so their target for this year was (all unknown to us!) six private schools, among which were a medical school, several normal schools, and Santa Maria University. Little did we know that six or seven of our boys were on the Communist Party payroll with tuition and living expenses paid by the party, and that one freshman boy (23 years old) was sent up here from Lima just for this project. The date was set for September 1, and the party members were given two weeks to accomplish the job. The first school was a normal school for boys run by the Salesian Brothers up in Puno, and that fell to the Communists last week. The way they do this is to work quietly among the student body, enlisting to their cause anybody who had a gripe of any kind against school policy, teachers, or administration. Then on the set day they stand up in class, declare a student strike, usher out the teachers and non-participating students (using force if necessary, for they have armed themselves ahead of time), and send a petition to the authorities demanding a voice in the management of the school, usually the removal of the administration, along with a whole long list of other demands. In every case so far this system has worked and the students (really Communist party members) choose their own administration, and the school eventually re-opens under Communist management.
"All this sounds fantastic, I know, but this ‘fantastic’ thing has happened in almost every university in the country and in some high schools. I forgot to tell you that many of the unions are infiltrated to the extent that they threatened a general strike if the students’ demands aren’t met. So, for fear of blood-shed, out of deep fear of Communism, out of national lack of courage, and in the face of a strike that would paralyze business, cut off water, electricity, etc. everybody caves in."

BROTHERLY LOVE OR EVIL HATE?

Indianapolis – A Most Successful School of Anti-Communism
The Central Indiana School of Anti-Communism was held in Indianapolis from October 28, to November 1. It was the most successful school of anti-Communism we have held for over twelve months. The crowds grew throughout the week, and we were privileged to have many television programs sponsored by the Schick Safety Razor Company. The sponsors of the school included many of the outstanding citizens of Indiana. The co-chairmen were two ex-governors, Governor Henry F. Schricker, Democrat, and Governor Harold W. Handley, Republican. Both ex-governors attended functions of the school and spoke movingly and commendingly. Those present at the concluding banquet will long remember the address of Governor Schricker. The principal sour note was an unbelievable editorial which appeared on October 25, in the Criterion, which is the official organ of the Catholic Arch Diocese of Indianapolis. With sadness we reprint the editorial so that our many Catholic friends may be aware of what is taking place in certain circles and may make whatever protest they consider advisable. (See editorial below.)
We have received numerous letters from Catholic friends who are heartbroken because of this editorial.
Father Cletus Healy, S.J., of Marquette University High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and publisher of "The Truth About Communism" has written the following letter to the editor if the Criterion:

"THE CRITERION

P.O. Box 174
Indianapolis 6, Ind.

"Reverend and dear Father Bosler, P.C.
"About 10 days ago a Protestant friend of mine stopped in to see me with a copy of THE CRITERION for October 25, 1963. As you may have already surmised, her distress came from your editorial deploring the advent of Dr. Fred Schwarz to Indianapolis.
"This was a lady of unusual intelligence. This was not her first acquaintance with smear journalism. In fact, she tried to present some similar examples from Protestant and Jewish press. To my embarrassment, however, I must admit that the smear in these other sources did not approach the unenviable artistic level achieved by the CRITERION.
"As a matter of fact I do not recall ever having read a smear piece in which the crude art of obloquy was indulged in with such sustained and undistracted skill.
"It seems to me especially unfortunate that this unusual example of studied bitterness should have been followed by the comment that ‘The opinions expressed in these editorial columns represent a Catholic viewpoint. .’ Where, pray tell, is the ‘Catholicity’ in such an undistracted disregard of Charity and rudimentary courtesy?
"As a clever journalist, your columnist has an undisputed flair. But as an exemplary exponent of Catholic political thought, it seems to me that he would fit more appropriately on the editorial staff of THE WORKER than on that of an official diocesan paper.
"I do not wish to torture you, Father, with these observations, but I do think serious reflection on the inappropriateness of this type of an editorial in a Catholic paper is urgently needed.

"Very sincerely in yours in Christ,
"Rev. Cletus Healy, S.J.

"P.S. If I may impose upon you further, may I confide to you my anxiety about the great harm I feel such an antagonistic press toward the anti-Communist movements in our Country–and, in the long run, to our Church.
"At the risk of eliciting your weary smile, may I confess my conviction that such an attack on an anti-Communist group does a magnificent service to the Communist cause.
"The work that I am doing makes it imperative that I have some acquaintance with Communist strategy and with current Communist tactics. From this study, I am convinced that a major objective of the Communists at the present time is to effect the political isolation of the actively anti-Communist Americans (cf. our issue No. 17 of THE TRUTH, p.4). This political isolation is achieved by engineering a mammoth smear campaign against the major anti-Communist movements. As a result of such a smear the entire movement is politically leperized and rendered politically impotent. It really constitutes a very sophisticated ‘book-burning’ operation. By rendering anything actively anti-Communist as ‘hysterical’ or belonging to the ‘fanatical right,’ large segments of our people are induced to refuse to listen–or, listening refuse to believe. In this way the more alert anti-Communists are deprived of political influence and the people are deprived of their salutary influence. Most unfortunate there is no corresponding leperization of the ‘Far Left.’ On the contrary, it grows in influence.
"The ultimate consequence of this pattern is written in the history of failure of one country after another now behind the Iron Curtain. The time to learn from these countries’ tragic history is now, before it’s too late.

"P.P.S. If you should want to present another Catholic point of view towards the anti-Communist movement, would you please consider the possibility of reprinting our Supplementary Issue No. 1 of THE TRUTH, ‘Our Obligation to Oppose Communism,’ I think it would improve your readers’ ability to come to a rational, responsible judgement of their own about the Communist issue."

"Holy gum-smoke
"Dr. Fred C. Schwarz is coming to town Monday to save us from Communism again. He and his road show will be in Indianapolis just in time to compete with the goblins in making Halloween interesting.
"Schwarz is the slickest of the far-rightists who have fatted themselves on the deep concern among Americans about Communism. It is no mean trick for an Australian citizen to spend 10 prosperous years in this country teaching Americans how to be Americans.
"The insulting implication is, of course, that American churches, schools, parents, communications media, and governmental agencies are not equal to this task; it takes an Australian super-patriot.
"Schwarz has been adept in keeping his so-called Christian Anti-Communist Crusade from being directly tied in with other segments of the radical right.
"But he still acts as though he had just swallowed a chicken bone if you ask him what he thinks about the John Birch Society. Now, you would think a great anti-Communist educator would have some opinion about the Birchers, wouldn’t you.
"Neither Schwarz nor his associate schoolmasters are bashful, though, about denouncing groups and individuals slightly more progressive than Millard Fillmore.
"Some of the standby speakers, in fact, get uninhibitedly abusive about things American. Schwarz himself prefers a perch a trifle lower than the angels. He is tiresomely skilled at using a lot of words and a bit of religion to say Communism is a bad thing.
"He also is skilled at peddling his book and a variety of other literature, tape recordings, and carnival souvenirs at his costly school, as well as at raising substantial ‘donations."
Schwarz has a knack for scaring ribbon clerks and old ladies fresh from a $20 blue rinse at the beauty parlor. He does this by baiting his lectures with offhand ‘Inside’ information – such as that Khrushchev will be ruling the world within a decade from San Francisco’s Mark Hopkins Hotel.
"One of the strange things about this alien who vigorously smears America’s government and private institutions and tells its citizens how dumb they are is that he offers no solutions. He just says everything is a mess, collects a lot of money from the well-to-do, and hurries on to the next town.
"This formula invariably leaves a ferment which local untra-rightists of all descriptions attempt to turn into heady wine. Schwarz is nothing if he is not a potent force for community divisiveness, distrust and confusion.
"But, stranger still, is the way he can get respectable local sponsorship. This Australian evangelist certainly is no more of an authority of Communism than thousands of able, articulate Americans and, unlike many of them, he has made no visible self-sacrifice in fighting the menace.
"We are particularly baffled to see the superintendent of the Indianapolis public schools and his top aide listed as sponsors of the Schwarz razzle-dazzle. Are the city’s public school teachers henceforth to be bullied into following the dismal directives of such persons as Robert Morris, one of Schwarz’s troupers whose quaint column appears in the Indianapolis News?
"Schwarz’s accurate word for such critical comments as ours is ‘hostile.’ We find his impending presence here about as welcome as an epidemic of the ringworm."
Note at end of page: "The opinions expressed in these editorial columns represent a Catholic viewpoint – not necessarily THE Catholic viewpoint. They are efforts of the editors to serve public opinion within the Church and within the Nation."

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE
An old party worker asks Gomulka, the Polish Communist leader: "You, comrade, who are so wise and who lead our country, please tell me, is this already socialism, or will things become still worse?"
Rumanian doctor to patient: "I am afraid I can’t help you. If I prescribe a communist-produced drug, you are finished. On the other hand if I recommend a western drug, I am finished."

BROCHURE ON THE WORK OF THE CHRISTIAN ANTI-COMMUNISM CRUSADE
We now have available a well-produced brochure on the work of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade. This fills a long-felt need as many friends and critics have little idea of the extent of the work we are doing all around the world. This brochure provides pictorial proof of our work in many lands and contains the comments of leaders concerning the value of the work. It also includes the audited financial statement and the audited statement of the financial income of the Crusade President.
We wish we could send this brochure to everyone but the cost would be far too great. It is available on request to those who feel they can make good use of it. It is ideal to present to: 1) Newspaper editors, 2) Ministers, 3) Sincere critics who have been misinformed concerning the nature and work of the Crusade, 4) Potential donors.
If you know of some special person who could profit by receiving this brochure, either write for it and present it personally, or ask us to send it directly. In this way you may stimulate financial help for our work.

INDIA
While the focus of attention has shifted somewhat to Communist activity in the Western Hemisphere, the Communist danger in Asia remains acute. The situation in India remains a cause of great concern and while we expand our work in this hemisphere, we are maintaining and increasing our efforts in India. In Kerala the freedom daily newspaper The Voice of Kerala, continues to publish and perform magnificent service.
In Andhra State the Indian workers travel the villages holding meetings, distributing literature, warning against Communism and testifying for Christ. The underprivileged boys in the orphan’s home receive the finest physical, spiritual, and educational care. It is a colossal burden to maintain the monthly subsidy or over $7,000, but we rejoice that we have been able to do this regularly, and we are confident that our friends will not fail us in the future.

ANTI-COMMUNISM SCHOOL IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
Preparations for the Anti-Communism School in Washington, D.C. have come to a temporary halt because of the tragic assassination of the President. These preparations will be resumed very soon. Our strategy remains the same:

1) The recruitment of a broadly-based, nonpartisan, nonsectarian sponsoring committee.
2) The distribution of scholarships to university students who are eager to receive an intensive course on the doctrines and fallacies of Communism.
3) The widest possible television coverage.

The need remains the same – adequate financial support so that these objectives may be realized.

CONCLUSION
It is good to pause periodically and to assess the value and nature of the work that has been done and to look deeply into our own hearts to see whether our own motives are pure. When the accusation was hurled indiscriminately that the death of President Kennedy was the result of hatred spread by "right-wing extremists" which had resulted in the creation of a "climate of hate," I endeavored to look deeply into my own heart to see if the motive was love or hate and to judge our work to see if anything we had said or done could have contributed to this tragedy. In so far as it is possible for an individual to judge his own motives, I can say my heart is devoid of hate of any person on this earth and that "the love of Christ constraineth me." While the work of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade has numerous deficiencies and inadequacies and we have not been without our share of mistakes, it is clear that the tragedy confirms the message we have been giving and indicates and increasing need for education on the nature of Communism in every corner of the earth. As this New Year commences we dedicate ourselves anew to this task fully conscious of the magnitude of the enemy forces but with faith in God, Who is the author of truth, reason and love and Who has said "I have not given unto you the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind."

Yours very sincerely,
Fred Schwarz
