Now,
certainly, we have to confess that our government knew it but it did not see
communism as a danger for our security. One can say that the government was
associated with the Communists supporting their program. A few weeks ago the
authorities arrested 9 Chinese in Rio. These men had a book with the names
of several people from the former government who were receiving money from
Communist China to make the revolution in Brazil. Supported by the
government also, every labor movement was like a Communist cell.
Tonight this banquet
could be the celebration of a big victory in Brazil. All the free world can
be exalted with what happened in Brazil. In particular, you of the Christian
Anti-Communism Crusade can rejoice because for ten months you have supported
a program in that country by putting in the hands of the university students
12,000 books "You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists)".
This helped a lot to realize how false is the Communist hope. I wish I had
time to read to you some of the hundreds of letters that I have received
from the students asking for books or just telling how helpful the book has
been to them.
With sorrow in my heart, I see people
trying to spoil victory in Brazil by saying that the revolution was done by
the army to install a dictatorship there. This is not true. The revolution
in Brazil was started by 100,000 religious women. They went into the streets
praying and singing religious songs. I remember one day Goulart’s
brother-in-law, Brizola, has scheduled a rally in Belo Horizonte. The
meeting should have started at 8:00 p.m. but, when Brizola got there with
his people in the public auditorium, they had no place to sit. One hour
before the meeting started, those religious women had taken all the seats
and in a loud voice singing and praying their rosary they refused to leave
the place. The moments just like that made Goulart realize that he did not
have the people’s support to make a social revolution in Brazil. Then he
had to leave the country, and the shedding of blood was not necessary.
I wish you could have seen how thousands
of people today are donating gold, such as rings and other jewelry, just to
help the economical recuperation of Brazil. So far the people have donated
over 300 pounds of solid gold, and this campaign is going all over Brazil as
a demonstration of how the people are supporting the new government.
We have a president elected by the
Congress and our Congress operates with all its constitutional guarantees.
Before I close let me say that the
reconstruction program has just started in Brazil. Your work is not finished
there. Communism remains there, and the real need right now is your
financial support to supply our 50,000 university students with literature
telling them of the nature of the Communist conspiracy, and this must be
done RIGHT NOW because as Brazil goes, America goes.
HAIL TO THE
RELIGIOUS WOMEN OF BRAZIL

I wouldn’t be surprised if at any time
now the Communists try to adopt the poet, Rudyard Kipling. It was Rudyard
Kipling who wrote, "The female of the species is more deadly than the
male" and from the Communists’ point of view that is true. Our great
hope of freedom is to arouse the women to the danger of communism. The
picture that Nathaniel Rangel gave of the role of the women of Brazil is
fascinating. I wonder what the pro-communist and anti-American Senator and
ex-governor, the associate of the Communists, Brizola thought, when he went
to that meeting in Belo Horizonte and found that he had a great audience,
that the hall was filled to capacity, but that the audience consisted of
Brazilian women who were using their rosaries and praying aloud. That is the
best way I have ever heard of to defeat a Communist rally. The women of
Brazil have set an example to the rest of the world. From their devotion to
God, family and Democracy, the men derived inspiration and courage.
The Role of the Christian Anti-Communism
Crusade
The events that have transpired in Brazil
are encouraging, and we are proud that we had a part to play in those events
but the battle must go on. The book "You Can Trust the Communists (to
be Communists)" has been distributed in a variety of ways. Nathaniel
Rangel has been handling the distribution to the university students. It has
been distributed through the bookstores and it was serialized in some of the
Brazilian newspapers. At present we have exhausted the printed supplies and
the reason that Nathaniel is here is to ask us to get them another 30,000
copies. I would like to do it, but we need $15,000 for this project. To have
to hesitate over $15,000 when the destiny of South America is at stake seems
almost criminal, but we cannot do it without the money. I am confident that
many of you will contribute to this need.
Three Victories
As we survey the world we can see three
places where we have had something in the nature of a victory over
communism. Those three places are Kerala-India, British Guiana, and Brazil,
and in each case the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade has been deeply
involved.
Kerala-India
In Kerala, India, the people were
deceived. They were seduced by the Communist promises. They elected a
Communist government. In the year 1957 we were able, because of the support
of some friends in this country, to provide a dedicated Indian, George
Thomas, Ph.D., trained in this country, with the where-withal to start a
daily newspaper and to inform the people of the nature of Communism and what
needed to be done to defeat it. We made a contribution to the overthrow of
communism in that land.
British Guiana
There is a critical situation in British
Guiana today, but three years ago it looked as though the Communists were
certain to be victorious there. Because we carried on a program of
grass-roots education to inform the people of the true nature of Communism
before they were finally conquered, the Communist conquest has been help up.
Today they have turned in their frenzy to violence and arson and murder. At
least for the time being a sanctuary, a base on the South American continent
to supply the guerilla forces of Venezuela and Brazil, has been denied the
international Communist movement.
The Principle of Anti-Communist Activity
The principle of our work is very simple.
It is this—Communism is a system of monopolistic tyranny. Human nature
loves to be free. Therefore, when people are given a choice and they know
what the issues are, they inevitably choose freedom. Communists must deceive
the people until their power is forcibly applied. Communism comes to power
by deception; it remains in power by force. The great weapon against
deception is knowledge. If we can reach the people of this Hemisphere and
the people of Asia while they have a choice (this is important as with
Communist conquest the choice is lost) with the truth concerning the nature
of communism, they will spurn it. Whatever materialistic programs are
carried out, however efficient the military program may be, however
effective economic measures are, unless they are associated with an
educational program to teach the specifics of communism, its ultimate goals,
its fundamental beliefs, its techniques of deception, these materialistic
programs by themselves will not be successful. We need a great ideological
offensive until the true nature of communism is known in every last corner
of this earth. Then and then only will the advance of communism be stopped.
The American Paradox
As we survey the world scene, particularly
the scene in the United States, we are confronted with an extremely puzzling
and paradoxical situation. On the international scene the situation is very
grim. Everybody acknowledges that events in Southeastern Asia are ugly and
portentious, that the situation is Africa is filled with danger, that Cuba
is in the grip of a hideous Communist dictatorship and the refugees from
that dictatorship are scattered everywhere throughout this Hemisphere.
American treasure and American blood is being spent in an effort to halt the
Communist advance. In addition to this, according to everything that can be
known, a self-professed Marxist with Communist associations, affiliations,
and activities assassinated the President of the United States. In spite of
this, at this moment the American Communists are enjoying a climate of
acceptance and respectability that they have not known for 25 years.
How do we account for this remarkable
paradox? There are many illustrations of it. While on the one hand American
boys are being drafted and sent to fight the Communists thousands of miles
away, a self-professed leader of the Communist Party runs for supervisor of
Los Angeles and gets more than 33,000 votes.
Violence and Non-Violence
After reading Communist propaganda, I can
find one reason why a lot of people who previously were alarmed about
communism within the United States are not so alarmed today. This reason is
that the American Communist Party has apparently repudiated the violent
pathway to power. When the Smith Act was written, it was very easy to prove
that the American Communist Party advocated the overthrow of the United
States government by force and violence. If you read the Communist
literature today, that would not be easy to prove because in it they are now
claiming that they propose to come to power without violence. Many people
say, "If they have given up force and violence, they are now a
legitimate political party. Therefore, we do not need to worry about
them."
This is only half the picture. The
Communists don’t claim that they have repudiated force and violence. They
claim they have repudiated it as the chosen method of coming to power within
the United States.
This statement appears in Political
Affairs, December, 1963, page 59, "When Marx used the phrase, ‘Force
is the midwife of revolution,’ he was referring as Aptheker has pointed
out to the use of force by the revolutionary government after the New Class
has taken power, merely to clear the ground for the work of
rebuilding." The Communists are saying that they are going to come to
power without the use of force, but once they are in power force will be
used to clear the ground for the work of rebuilding. In other words they
propose to do precisely what Hitler did.
The Hitler Parallel
Hitler came to power within Germany by
peaceful means. He was elected to power. It was only when he was in power
that he tightened the strings of control and then he violently destroyed the
constitution and proceeded to do what his theory dictated should be done,
and he destroyed millions of Jews. I asked a newsman recently, "If I
had come in 1935 and tried to tell the people that one day Adolph Hitler,
sincerely believing his doctrines, would set out to murder 5 million Jews,
what do you think would have happened to me?"
He said, "People would have said you
were mad."
The Power of Ideas
We do not believe in the power of human
ideas. If I am a heretic, and some people say that I am, I like to think
that my heresy is this – I tend to overestimate the significance of human
ideas. I believe this is much better than underestimating them. I believe
that ideas sincerely held ultimately result in certain courses of action. I
believe Hitler destroyed the Jews because his doctrines taught him that he
should, not because of his paranoiac personality. I believe that Lee Harvey
Oswald assassinated President John Fitzgerald Kennedy because of his Marxist
doctrines, not because of the way his daddy treated him when he was a baby.
I believe that we need to reaffirm human rationality; that we must reject
the Marxist these that we are helpless victims of our economic environment
and the experiences that environment provided during our first few years;
and likewise we must reject the Freudian thesis that we are the victims of
certain unconscious forces over which we have no control because of the
fixation we developed towards our mother of because of some experience
during our first few years of life.
Psychological Gobbledygook
This modern cult of psychological
gobbledygook is an assault on human reason. It is an assault on human
responsibility. Of course, everyone of us has certain impulses to do certain
things. Every child has them, and maturity is the learning to control these
impulses. I think there is more sense in an old French proverb than the
entire modern cult of psychological gobbledygook. The old French proverb
says, "It is amazing how easy it is to keep your temper when the other
man is a lot bigger than you are."
The Communists believe their ideas. We
ought to give them credit for that. Their ideas tell them the business class
is a curse on mankind. Since their doctrines teach this, it is their duty,
their moral duty, their righteous duty (should they be in a position to do
so) to clear the ground of the business or the bourgeois class. I think we
would be wise to face this truth. We can’t wish it away; we can’t ignore
the reality of Communist doctrine. We must realize that if the Communist
program for our conquest is successful, by every rational expectation, we
will see the greatest program of planned extermination by scientific murder
that history has ever known, because it’s inherent within the doctrines
and beliefs of communism.
While the Communists may have temporarily
repudiated violence as the means of coming to power, they have certainly not
repudiated its use after they are in power.
The Communist Strategy
The reason they have repudiated violence
as the means of coming to power is because they don’t need it. Their
program is going successfully without it. Their present program is expressed
by the formula, "Encirclement plus demoralization equals progressive
surrender." This breaks down into a 3-pronged Satanic pitchfork on
which to impale the United States.
The first prong is the aggressive
Communist conquest of the countries of Asia, Africa, Central and South
America. The second prong is the neutralization of Western Europe. The third
prong is the demoralization and the isolation of the United States. When we
see world affairs in this perspective, we see clearly that the Communists
are making fearful gains in each of these areas.
The Anti-Communist Strategy
I suggest that this provides us with a
rationale for anti-communist activity. We are no longer the helpless
playthings of force and government. Communism is self limited to the
avoidance of thermonuclear war. They don’t want it. Their whole program is
directed to its avoidance. If their program is to succeed, they must conquer
without apparent external aggression in the countries of Asia, Africa,
Central and South America, and they must demoralize and weaken the will so
that surrender will take place within the United States.
In each country of Asia, Africa, Central
and South America, therefore, they need an internal Communist Party so that
the revolution can have the appearance of being a spontaneous national
force. They recruit their Communist leadership in the universities. If we
can reach the university students with the truth concerning communism
before, not after, the Communists have recruited them, the young idealistic
students will spurn and repudiate the Communist seduction and we will be
able to dry up Communist recruitment at the roots. This is a program that is
intelligent and practical, and all can participate in it.
Chile
The Communists claim they have an
excellent chance of coming to power this September by election because they
openly state they dominate the coalition which is given a 50-50 chance of
being elected. A tremendous educational program is needed to inform the
people of what’s at stake. This can achieve a great deal. We have hundreds
of books in Spanish on their way down there now in response to an appeal by
the Chileans.
Program for the USA
We have discussed the situation on British
Guiana and in Kerala. What about the United States? The United States is the
most important country in this battle because history has chosen it to be
the custodian of freedom. Were it not for the power of the United States,
the Communists could conquer the rest of the world by telephone.
America had to come and save Australia
from 75-million Japanese equipped with classical weapons starting 5,000
miles to the north. Today the Communists have one billion under their
control. They have submarines with missiles with atomic warheads. They could
start off our coasts. The moment the United States becomes unable or
unwilling to defend my country, the Communists could pluck Australia like a
ripe plum. The destiny of human freedom is determined by what takes place
here, and we are endeavoring to wage a great educational program concerning
the nature of Communism right here.
The Choice
The choice, as Dr. Morris pointed out, is
not between thermonuclear war and surrender. The Communists don’t want
thermonuclear war any more than we do. The fact of the matter is they want
it much less because they don’t need it. Their present program is
obviously successful and seeing that they expect to take over this country
before long, and since they are very well informed concerning the
magnificence of your homes, highways, schools and churches, they certainly
don’t want to destroy it in advance. They have ruled out thermonuclear war
as the instrument of policy, and they are advancing because of our
ignorance, because of our inability to understand their strategy, because of
our unwillingness to come to grips with the nature of their offensive and
what they are doing.
Basically this is a question of
intelligence and character. This is a question of spirit and mind. Are we
prepared to devote ourselves with equal intensity to an understanding of the
techniques of Communism and its sacrificial defeat as we are to our business
and health and home affairs.
The final answer will depend to a great
degree upon what sort of people we are, what we believe, what we love, what
we are ready to fight for, what we are ready to die for.
I would like to finish with this poem:
God give us men.
A time like this demands strong minds,
great hears, true faith and ready hands.
Men whom the lust of office does not kill.
Men whom the spoils of office cannot buy.
Men who possess opinions and a will.
Men who have honor;
Men who will not lie;
Men who will stand before a demagogue
and damn his treacherous flatteries without winking;
Tall men, sun crowned, who live above the
fog in public duty and in private thinking.
WHY DID YOU DO IT?

Since the day it was revealed that I
joined the Communist Party as a counterspy for our FBI I have been asked the
same question by everyone I’ve met. "Why did you do it? How could you
live like that letting the Communists take over your entire lives,
pretending to believe in things that you actually despised, frightened every
moment that the Communists would discover your true identity? You could have
been killed, or you could simply have disappeared: What if you had said one
wrong word, made one wrong move? And when they did find out about you, how
were you ever able to stand the threats, the organized hate campaign, the
abusive letters, the round-the-clock obscene telephone calls? How were you
able to go on, never knowing when it would end? You didn’t have to do it?
Why? Why did you do it?"
Most people expect a very complicated
answer. If so they are due for a rather big disappointment–because the
answer is really so very simple.
I had three reasons–God-given reasons,
the three very best reasons in the world–Paul Jr., Betsy Lou and little
Bobby. Three lives for which I’m responsible, three minds for which there
must be Freedom, three souls for which I pray. For they are my children and
God’s! And then there were your children, too. And if at this very moment
the FBI were to ask me to do it again, I’d have to say, yes, I’d do it
all over again!
Now, on the other hand, if I were to say
to you that those five years were "easy", I’d be lying and if I
told you that I functioned with the calmness of a Joan of Arc, I’d be
psychopathic. Because the truth is: I’m a normal woman – no different
from any other wife and mother. There were times I was so sick with fear my
hands shook, I couldn’t eat, nor could I sleep. And there were times when
I simply fell on the bed crying, "Dear God, I’m not strong enough: I
can’t go on." Yes, there were moments like these. And it is one of
those moments that I would like to tell you about now. Because, whether you
realize it or not, everyone of you here tonight is in the same situation I
was in, and you are faced with exactly the same choice.
Perhaps the most decisive moments in those
entire five years as a counterspy occurred shortly after supper one evening.
My husband and I were seated in the living room of our home when we suddenly
heard footsteps; the front door opened and in marched one of my Communist
superiors. This masculine woman looked at us coldly for a moment and then
without another word she demanded, "Call Paul Jr. in here". It
seemed like an eternity before I could speak; a dozen thoughts raced through
my mind. "Does she know something?" "Where have I
slipped?" "Why does she want my son?" With dragging feet I
went to get him. Leading him by the hand I felt as if I were sacrificing my
young. The moment he walked in, she blurted out, "Paul, does your
mother make you go to Sunday School?" I remember that I just froze as I
waited for the answer I knew was coming. "Sure," my son said,
"I go to Temple every week." I can’t tell you all the things I
felt then — my heart felt like it was tied up in a thousand knots. My
mouth was dry, and my mind was a blank, because there are no excuses for the
crime of allowing a child to believe in God. The very idea of God is
forbidden the son of a Communist parent.
She asked Paul Jr. several more questions
and then as she turned and glared at me she said, "Comrade, the Party
will not approve of your actions. You must educate your children in their
Marxist responsibilities!"
After she left, I think I almost — well,
it was a very bad time. My husband and I talked most of the night. I said I
didn’t think I could go on. That perhaps we should call the FBI and tell
them we were quitting.
Because Judaism is the very antithesis of
Communism as American Jews our faith in God has played a very important part
in our family’s life. And we could not deny that faith to our children.
For us to live a lie was one thing — but what about our children? How many
more convincing excuses could we even make for keeping Paul Jr. out of the
Communist youth groups. We knew what they’d do to him there. We knew they’d
erase, by fair means or foul, the last vestige of his faith. For
totalitarianism can not tolerate two masters. God has to go!
We couldn’t take the chance of involving our children in something like
that.
And yet what if we gave up? What if we
just quit and sat idly by? Sure, we could relax, we would sleep regularly,
we would live without fear again, we would return to a normal family life.
It was tempting, let me tell you that. But how long would it last? What
about the rest of my children’s lives and their children’s and yours. If
I failed to do even my small part now, what kid of future might they look
forward to; what kind of Country without God?
I couldn’t quit. I had to go on! I
couldn’t give up. I had to keep trying, no matter what happened! So I
stayed with the job until it was finished. And I will never regret it as
long as I live.
If you remember, a few moments ago, I said
you were faced with the same decision, and it’s true. You are in the
process of making a choice for yourselves and your children, just as I was.
You can sit idly by and watch the step-by-step elimination of God if you so
choose, or you can take part in doing something about it. You can relax in
your soft, plushy chairs while the new immoral order takes root, or you can
stand up and make your voices heard. The choice is yours.
I know it won’t be easy. But let me ask
you some of the questions I asked myself that night. If you have ever looked
at your child as he lay sleeping and thought, "I would do anything for
you".—What are you doing about this? If you would give your life for
your children, why won’t you give a little time for this? If you’d work
till you dropped for them, why won’t you work for this?
If you really care about their futures,
have you written your congressman, have you made your friends aware of this
situation? Are you supporting great organizations like the Christian
Anti-Communism Crusade?
No one else can make our decisions for us,
but I ask you to remember this: "All that is necessary for the success
of evil is for good men to do nothing."
THE SPIRIT OF
SOCRATES

I’d like to speak tonight in the spirit
of Socrates. You know, many years ago Socrates was the man who distinguished
himself by always asking "why."
God and Morality
Today, as we look at developments around
the world on the national and international scene we see a greater need than
ever before for God to come into our lives and our public institutions.
Juvenile delinquency is rampant everywhere, crime statistics are soaring,
and moral codes are declining. Yet in the face of all this, men, some of
whom have dedicated their lives to a religious life, are working almost
every day to eliminate God from our schools and our public institutions. Our
concerned parents are understandably asking "Why?".
Communism
Today Communists are committing acts of
terror all over the world: frightful, horrible acts of terror: they’re
extending their cruel dominion and their cruel bondage. Yet here in the
United States, even though legislation has been on the books for 14 years,
legislation which does not repress Communists, mind you, but simply asks
that Communists register so we will know who they are and what they are
doing so we will be able to keep track of their conspiratorial movements, we’re
told that this cannot be done. Understandably people are saying
"Why."
The Reason
I would like to offer a solution and I
submit that this solution, ladies and gentlemen, is one that you will find
applicable in every area of international and national policy even down to
the domestic scene. The reason is that the people
who are planning our destiny today, the policy planners of the United States
Government, notably those in the State Department, have already come to the
conclusion that there is only one alternative to nuclear war, and that is
that we must merge our way of life with the Soviet way of life under the
framework of the United Nations.
Once you understand they are working for
this goal every single thing that takes place will be understandable.
Disarmament
They are using for the most part the
framework of something they call disarmament. As we analyze it, however, you
will find that it is not disarmament at all; it’s a device to achieve the
goal that I just mentioned.
Back in September 1961, the United Sates
State Department unfurled a plan. They called it State Department Document
7277. It said that the United States would work to dissolve national armies
in three stages and simultaneously transfer international peace keeping
responsibility from nations to the international agencies, notably the
United Nations. That’s the program that we’re working for today. Under
Stage 3 of this plan we in the United States and other nations are to have
only those weapons which we need for internal policing and only those forces
which we will be supplying to the United Nations.
Analysis soon shows this is not
disarmament. Disarmament takes place when nations destroy their arms and
effectively resolve to arm no more. This is something far different. This is
a transfer of military strength and sovereignty from nations to these
international agencies headed in many cases by men who are committed to our
destruction.
Stage 1
This program is being vigorously
implemented with every passing day. Soon after this plan was announced the
United States Disarmament Agency was created by act of Congress and
important diplomats and large amounts of money were assigned to this agency
so that it could begin implementing this grand design. In April of 1962 we
put a treaty on the table at Geneva bringing this thing about. We suggested
that Stage 1 is to be of three years duration and during this we are to
effect a 30% disarmament, create a peace observation corps. Between Stage 1
and Stage 2 all nations will have to submit to the compulsory jurisdiction
of the International Court of Justice without reservation. This destroys the
Connally Reservation.
Stage 2
In Stage 2 the whole plan is to be
completed, within six years. The Rostow Memorandum, and Rostow is the chief
policy planner of the United States State Department, advises that we should
not wait for a formal treaty. As we observe the world scene, we note that we
are proceeding with this plan. We are actually dismantling our military
might around the world in order to show our good faith to the Communists, to
show them that we mean it when we say we are working for peace. Senator
Goldwater has rightly pointed out we are now well in the first stage of
disarmament. We are phasing out our manned bombers. We don’t have one
manned bomber on schedule; we have none in production. A year ago we had
1,100 B-47s in Europe, many B-52s and B-58s. We’ve dismantled them all. We’re
dismantling our missile bases in Turkey and Italy, our conventional bases in
Italy, Morocco and Tunisia and England. Why? We’re showing Khrushchev that
we are sincere when we offer this plan. We are also offering all kinds of
inducements for Khrushchev to come along. People wonder why it is when these
people shoot down our dutiful sons flying in the Armed Services of the
United States that we hardly raise a voice in protest. We mention it once
and drop it. People wonder why it is that after our Congress appropriates
billions of dollars to the State Department for our foreign aid program we
take these funds and in many cases give it to outright Communists or to
Communist dictators. Read the details of our cultural relations pact signed
only in February.
Trade and Cultural Exchange
We have entered into a large scale program
of cultural exchange with the Communists. If you look at it closely you will
find that the area of exchange is where the Communists are behind trying to
catch up with us. This is particularly so in the area of agriculture where
the Communists are experiencing a great critical shortage and the prospect
is that if we don’t do something they will have a real crisis on their
hands in the next five years. This is where the exchange is taking place. We’re
giving them our technical and scientific know-how, giving the chemical
secrets of treating crops to the deadly Khrushchev to shore up his economy.
Domestic Appeasement
Even on the domestic scene we’re making
concessions to the Communists. We are a religious people, dedicated to such
by our exciting Declaration of Independence which firmly launched us on a
religious foundation. How I wish the eight judges on the Supreme Court who
have been ruling otherwise would read the Declaration of Independence. Its
Preamble says that we derive our authority from the laws of nature and
nature’s God and emphasises this by the use of capital letters. It goes on
to say that all men are endowed by their Creator, with a capital C, with
certain inalienable rights. Now we have to sit back and listen to the judges
tell us that this nation has to be neutral between religion and atheism and
anything like a simple nondenominational prayer or Bible reading is
something proscribed and alien to our system.
Why are we doing it? I think all you have
to do is read the UNESCO Pact of December, 1960—they called it a
convention against discrimination in education. They say that education has
to be the same all over the world. So what are we doing? We are actually
secularizing our schools and secularizing our public institutions in order
to make the prospect of merger more agreeable to Khrushchev. If you keep
that in mind you will see why we’re doing something that runs against our
whole heritage and runs against our whole history.
A Religious People
We are a religious people. It was intended
that there should be separation between Church and State, but it was never
intended that there should be a wall of separation between God and State.
Our whole heritage cries out against that.
Tolerating the Intolerable
As the Communists commit aggression after
aggression we supinely sit back and wave a finger and say we will tolerate
it no more and then tolerate it. All you have to do is look at a map of the
world over the last five years and see what Communism was five years ago and
see what it is today and you will realize that they are moving now at an
accelerated pace toward the goal from which they never depart, the goal of
victory for world Communism.
The New Order
Some believe these things are the only
alternative to a nuclear war with weapons that can destroy the whole earth
and all the people in it. I say that that’s not the alternative. If you
analyze what’s happening it’s not world disarmament at all that we’re
working for, but the creation of a new order. I am not alone in this
interpretation and I’d like to read from an Associated Press report of a
speech made by Adlai Stevenson in Berkeley, California on April 4.
"Adlai Stevenson, United States Ambassador to the United Nations, has
warned Americans that they must forget nationalism and place world unity
first or the world is lost. He said Americans must grasp, stronger than ever
before, the audacious dream of world unity and that if the United States
does not press on in support of world policing and world law, it is lost.
"Americans," Stevenson said, "still are divided on
nationalism versus world government despite the fact that the rationale of
separate, disparate sovereignty has all but vanished." Adlai spells it
out all so clearly.
On the same program U Thant, the Secretary
General of the United Nations, said that nationalism has caused setbacks in
the United Nations struggle for world peace through world government.
However, he added, the UN is progressing toward the theoretical ultimate aim
of world legislation if not world government.
They say it more eloquently than I. They
make clear what we’re working for. They aim to substitute the
peace-keeping forces of the United Nations, headed as these forces are by
the United Secretary General in Charge of Security Council and Political
Affairs, a man who is a Soviet Commissar, for the armed might of the United
States of America.
The Present Danger
So determined are these people that many
of the things that we have accepted as part of our American institution are
now being threatened. There is litigation in Los Angeles that would have the
Pledge of Allegiance declared unconstitutional because it contains the
phrase "under God". The National Chaplains Association with 30,000
members met in Chicago last week and they passed a resolution dedicating all
their resources to the fight against several chapters of the American Civil
Liberties Union which have announced they are going to bring action against
the Department of Defense to prevent it paying salaries to chaplains. Their
interpretation of the First Amendment would now take away from us an
institution, the chaplaincy, which has given great and wonderful benefits to
people all over the world. This is the reality in which we’re all living.
We are living in a dangerous age. We know
that Khrushchev and other evil men have the power to destroy us and yet I
say that there is only one cause in the world today that is capable of
protecting the United States and in fact the whole world and that is the
military strength of the United States of America. We cannot allow the
forces of U Thant to be substituted for this force.
Our Heritage
With the military strength of the United
States goes a great spiritual strength’ the strength of our Constitution;
the strength of our people; the strength of our industries; and the strength
of our farms. These are the things that conform to the dictates of man’s
nature. We have here in the United States and in the American heritage
something that men have thirsted for from the beginning of time. This
heritage contains three elements. The first is the religious and spiritual
fabric of our way of life; the second is the free enterprise system which
has made our nation great; and the third is the Constitution with its
exciting Bill of Rights and the common law heritage that goes back to the
time of the Magna Carta in 1215.
We should dedicate ourselves to the
maintenance of this heritage. It expresses best the needs of man’s nature
as created by God. We must work to preserve it.
The Free Enterprise System
Consider the free enterprise system. This
today is not only feeding and satisfying the material needs of virtually
everybody in the United States, but we are extending our largesse all over
the world. No other system has been as effective as this system. No other
force has waged war on poverty such as the free enterprise system and yet
under the framework of the planners a sterile socialism is to be substituted
for it. This is anathema.
The United Nations
Suppose we surrender sovereignty to the
United Nations. Who are the men occupying the chairs at the Council Table of
the World? At the head of the table is Nikita Khrushchev with his own three
votes and his nine satellites. If U Thant has his way, Mao Tse-tung and his
cohorts will be there. Then there would be Nasser, Nkruma, Sukarno
representing the quasi Communists and so-called neutralists. Adlai Stevenson
will be there representing the United States. What’s going to happen to
our wonderful heritage with these components? There are now 113 member
nations of the UN. They plan 126. There aren’t a half-dozen nations that
are committed tot he concept of free enterprise. We alone have the Bill of
Rights and only those nations that have come out of the British Commonwealth
know anything such as the common law tradition. It would mean the eclipse of
our magnificent heritage.
This must not happen. I believe that 1964
is indeed the crossroads. I think that Adlai Stevenson has stated the issue
squarely. We have to choose between nationalism and world government and I
think that nationalism in the sense that I use it, is a magnificent American
heritage with out spiritual and religious essence, with our free enterprise
system, our common law heritage and Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Let’s
take these things and extend them with a spirit of charity to men all over
the world. These are the things that most conform to the nature vested in
man by a wise and all-knowing God. This is the cause to which I ask that you
dedicate yourselves tonight.
COMMUNIST
DOCTRINE DISPROVED
There are many ways to disprove Communist
doctrines. The financial support of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade
reveals how ridiculous one of the basic doctrines of Communism is.
From this doctrine the Communists reach
the conclusion that the main financial support of the anti-communist
movement is business and industry. If their doctrine were true this would be
so. This doctrine states that there exists in capitalist society a truceless
conflict between the business class and the working class. Communists
represent the working class, therefore, the anti-communists represent the
business class. Therefore, the anti-communists are supported by donations
from corporations, business firms and businessmen.
This conclusion is so far from the facts
that is it funny. If the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade had to depend on
the support of business it would close down tomorrow. This is illustrated
clearly by the following true story. Many American business firms have
investments in Brazil. These investments were threatened by the rise of
Communism in that country. It would seem indisputable that business firms
would be interested in legitimate activity to halt the advance of Communism.
We secured a list of 500 American firms
with investments in Brazil and sent them the following letter:
"Gentlemen:
As you know, Brazil is the great prize in
South America for which the Communists are energetically and ceaselessly
working. Their progress is shown by the infiltration, rampant nationalism,
political instability, and industrial unrest in which they are deeply
involved.
They are aided by the widespread
misunderstanding of the nature, methods, and objective of Marxism and
Communism. An educational program to teach the truth concerning Communism is
an essential element in an effective anti-Communist program.
The book "YOU CAN TRUST THE
COMMUNISTS to be Communists" has been described by the United States
Information Agency as an extremely clear explanation of the Communist
threat. It is available in Portuguese. I am forwarding a copy both in
English and Portuguese, and I hope you will read it and judge its
effectiveness.
We wish to distribute this as widely as
possible and ask your cooperation for your economic self-interest and the
preservation of human freedom.
You may help in various ways. These
include: 1) Distribute this book to your employees; 2) Subsidize its
distribution to university students and other groups.
I enclose a copy of an illustrated
pamphlet in Spanish entitled ‘If Communism Comes to Mexico’. We are
planning its production in Portuguese with the title ‘If Communism Comes
to Brazil’ for grass-roots distribution.

In response to this appeal we did not
receive one dollar. The investment in literature, stationery, printing and
postage was a complete loss to the Crusade. This will shock many of our
friends while our opponents will simply refuse to believe it. Yet it is
true.
The Individual
The individual is all important in the
struggle for freedom. We have been able to carry on because of the
sacrificial giving of scores of thousands of individual American citizens
who believe that Communism threatens their heritage. A few individuals have
been able to give substantially. Most have given small amounts. All gifts
are most welcome, and are manifestations of the true wealth of America, the
generosity and compassion of its G0d-fearing citizens.
You are the most important person in this
battle. Without you the chain will be broken, the cause will be lost. We
cherish your fellowship in service, sacrifice and suffering. From such
elements victory is created.
Our Lord stressed the value of each
individual. In our present automated, mechanized society, the warm and
wonderful truth that each individual is worth more than the entire material
world cannot be stressed too often. Remember the very hairs of your head are
all numbered. God need you and the cause of human freedom needs you.
