DETENTE WITH RUSSIA

WHAT IS COMMUNISM?

CONTINUED COLLEGE RESPONSE

THE INDIANA SCHOOL OF ANTI-COMMUNISM

A TIME TO GIVE AND RECEIVE

DETENTE WITH RUSSIA
The idea that America and Soviet Russia are destined to be allies in a future war with Communist China is rapidly gaining ground in some groups which influence American foreign policy. They advise that every effort should be made to seek a "detente" with Soviet Russia. They are prepared to take "calculated risks" to achieve this. Such risks would often include sacrificing Vietnam to the communists and trading with the Communist World even in strategic goods.

The objective evidence suggests that this point of view is utopian rather than realistic. It is built of wishes and fragments of fantasy and ignores unpalatable reality. If translated into policy, this viewpoint will be a real threat to the future security of the United States and to the freedom of all men.
Webster’s dictionary defines detente as, "easing or relaxation of strained relations and political tensions between nations."
The cause of the political tension and strained relations between the Soviet Union and the United States is clear. It is the role of the Communist Party and communist doctrine in the formation of the policies of the Soviet Union.
The Soviet Union is governed by the Communist Party. The Communist Party is a minority organization which has established dictatorial power over the lives of the Soviet people and which utilizes the Soviet State and its assets for the achievement of purposes dictated by communist theory. This does not mean that Soviet policies are not also directed by national self-interest. National self-interest often runs parallel to the higher goal of communist world conquest. A strong military and economic base is essential for the achievement of the communist goal.
Communist doctrine has taught the communist leaders that it is their duty to achieve communist world domination. It has given them a picture of a world divided into two conflicting camps. These are the capitalist and socialist camps. In their thinking, "Socialism is good; capitalism is bad."
The capitalist camp is led by "American Imperialism" while the socialist camp is led by the Soviet Union.
In tune with this doctrine, the World Communist movement has defined "AMERICAN IMPERIALISM" as "THE GREATEST INTERNATIONAL EXPLOITER; THE CENTER OF WORLD REACTION; THE CHIEF BULWARK OF MODERN COLONIALISM; THE INTERNATIONAL GENDARME; THE MAIN FORCE OF AGGRESSION AND WAR; THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD."

The Sino-Soviet Conflict
This simple picture of the two camps has been complicated by the bitter conflict within the socialist camp between the Soviet and Chinese Communists. Chinese Communism is in the throes of a frenzied upheaval at home and an arrogant belligerence abroad. The so-called "great cultural revolution" is shaking the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese State to its foundations. It is characterized by a swarm of frenzied adolescents, called the Red Guard, roaming the cities and the countryside of China, attacking all existing remnants of culture and sanity.
The Red Guard is led by the Chinese Defense Minister, Lin Piao, and operates in the name of the "thought of Mao Tse-tung."
All colleges and universities have been closed and teachers have been ridiculed, molested, or arrested. The Red Guard seems to have declared war on the Communist Party organization itself, and clashes between these adolescent activists and workers are reported daily. It will be some time before the precise number of victims is known and the end is certainly not in sight. I predict that there will be millions of Chinese corpses before the Red Guard rampage is spent.
The motivation seems to be a paranoid terror of bourgeois reconquest at home and a frenzied xenophobia abroad. This xenophobia is manifest by bitter attacks on both America and the Soviet Union. It is not surprising that they mouth all the established communist doctrinal statements concerning the "hideous imperialism" of the United States, but they have accused the Soviet Union of reverting to capitalism and of forming a conspiracy with the United States to rule the world. They have attempted to rally around themselves the Communist Parties of the remaining nations.
Because of the spectacular and bizarre actions and the verbal belligerence of the Communist Chinese, there is a tendency to concentrate on this danger to world peace. Attention is thus diverted from the continuing program of World Communism, led by the Soviet Union, which consists of deeds more than words. Over the long period, the more sophisticated program directed by the Russian Communists constitutes the greater danger. An important element of this danger is the assumption that it does not exist. As evidence of the magnitude of this danger, I present the following:

1) The World Communist Parties are convinced that the Soviet program is more effective to advance the goals of World Communism.
This is shown by the fact that almost without exception the Communist Parties of the world are aligned with the Soviet Union rather than Red China. The Albanian Communist Party is the only one of the 90 Communist Parties of the world wholeheartedly supporting Communist China. It is inconceivable that Fidel Castro, with his frenzied hatred of the United States and his passionate desire to conquer Latin America, would be siding with the Soviet Union and opposing Red China if he did not believe that this was the best way to advance communist conquest.
2)
Soviet deeds.
The communist attack on South Vietnam is currently the most acute manifestation of the communist world offensive. The attitude to the conflict in Vietnam is the touchstone of communist sincerity. Chinese Communist support for North Vietnam is wholehearted in words but halfhearted in deeds. They are prepared to sacrifice support for Vietnam to their hatred of Soviet Union. The support of the Soviet Union for North Vietnam is wholehearted and accepts no limitations.
This is expressed in an article in the communist newspaper "People’s World" of November 5, by Victor Perlo:

"The NFL forces use larger military formations equipped with artillery, and North Vietnam uses an ever-expanding array of defensive equipment against air attacks.
"North Vietnam now has the most effective anti-aircraft defense ever used in war according to the best known American military commentators. U.S. planes, despite their multiplied speed and short flying distance over Vietnamese territory, are absorbing larger loss rates than the U.S. Air Force took from anti-aircraft over Germany in World War II. The dense AA gun and missile network and the sophisticated radar network, functioning with split-second accuracy on a country-wide scale, are all supplied by the U.S.S.R. So are the war planes, appearing in increasing numbers and winning the begrudging respect of their American adversaries.
"In an extremely important joint statement, the Warsaw Pact powers in July pledged to render ‘every kind of assistance . . . needed to victoriously repulse the American aggression,’ and to allow volunteers to fight there whenever the North Vietnamese government requests. Military technicians are there already, and Vietnamese flyers are trained on Soviet soil.
". . . Absolutely essential is the great economic, military and political aid from the U.S.S.R. and other socialist countries." (Page 6)

3) Soviet words.
Since the overthrow of Khrushchev, Brezshnev is the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In this position he is the leading spokesman of World Communism. He does not speak frequently and when he does, his words should be considered carefully. He wrote an editorial in "Pravda," June 11, 1966. His words speak for themselves:

"A major objective of Soviet foreign policy is to build up the might and unity of the socialist world system.
"Our invariable policy is to give full support to the peoples upholding their freedom and independence against imperialism, to assist the liberation and revolutionary movement. We see this as our sacred internationalist duty. It also meets the interests of our socialist country.
"Imperialism, an enemy of socialism and peace, still commands considerable strength. The imperialists refuse to leave the historical scene of their own free will. They use every opportunity to intensify their activity and to counterattack. Evidence of this is the imperialists’ acts of aggression–the criminal U.S. war in Vietnam, America’s provocations against Cuba, intrigues against the countries that have rid themselves of colonialism, the revival of German militarism in the FRG, West Germany’s revanchist claims.
"The present international situation brings us to the conclusion that closing the ranks of the World Communist movement is an increasingly imperative task. The Central Committee of the Party is doing all in its power to accomplish this task.
"Our Party is convinced that all who cherish the cause of victory over imperialism, the cause of world socialism, will rally in the one international army of Communists.
"Our assistance is varied. It is military and economic aid, as well as active political support for our Vietnamese brothers. We are taking new measures and exerting further efforts to hasten the victory of the courageous people of Vietnam."

Are these the words of a man who has renounced the communist objective of world conquest?
The big danger is that while we are concentrating on a frontal confrontation with Communist China, we may be outflanked and surrounded by the forces of communism led by the Soviet Union. Attention must be focused on the total communist threat. The devil is no less dangerous as an Angel of Light than as a Roaring Lion.

WHAT IS COMMUNISM?
Lecture 5–Communist Recruitment
There are today more than 43 million communists in the world. These are individuals who claim that they are members of the Communist Party. Not one of these was born a communist. Everyone of them chose to become a communist at some stage in life. They were convinced of the correctness of the communist doctrine, of the value of communist programs, and the virtue of the communist objective.
Communism has succeeded or failed in most countries in accordance with its ability to recruit people who become members of the Communist Party and dedicate their lives to advance the communist program and work for the communist conquest of their own country and ultimately the communist conquest of the entire world.
Who are these people who are recruited to communism? Where are we most likely to find them? What group of people seems to be most susceptible to the appeal of communism? What arguments are used to convince them? How do they become communists?
Contrary to what many people thing, the great recruiting ground of the communists is not the working class and the poor. Communism, as such, has always had very little appeal to the workers. The great recruiting ground of the communists is the college and university. This is easily proved by a survey of the world communist leadership. Practically every major world communist figure was recruited to communism while he was a student at some university. Karl Marx was attracted to the doctrines which he ultimately formalized into the doctrines of Marxism while he was a university student. Frederick Engels was a university student when he became associated with Marx. Lenin embraced Marxism while he was a university student. Stalin became a communist while he was a student at a theological seminary.
If we take the communist leadership of China, we find exactly the same pattern. Mao Tse-tung became a communist while he was a student librarian at the National University in Peking. Chou En-lai, the Premier, became a communist while he was a student at a French University in Paris. The commander-in-chief of the Red Army, Chu The, became a communist while he was a student at a Prussian military academy in Germany.
So it continues. Fidel Castro, after he had established communist power in Cuba, came out and announced, "I have been a Marxist-Leninist since my student days, but I hid it; for had I not done so, I could not have brought the revolution to a successful conclusion."
The group that is susceptible to communist recruitment is the group of students in colleges or universities. They are in the prime of their intellectual life enjoying the exploration of the world of ideas.
Within the United States the Communist Party has had to colonize the unions. This means that they take graduates from universities and send them as manual workers into the factories. They have been unable to recruit manual workers suitable for positions of leadership within the Communist Party.

The Appeal
Why does communism appeal to these students while they are at universities? Communism recruits in terms of two things: a grievance and a vision. The grievance convinces the student of a situation which is wrong and should be corrected. The vision presents a future situation which is most attractive and promises to cure the grievance.
Young people, particularly bright intellectual students, are frequently very idealistic in an emotional sense. They are sensitive to the evils in the world around them. This is often associated with a peculiar insensitivity to the evil within themselves. Since every society in this world is made up of imperfect people and has various imperfections, there are always grievances which can stimulate the concern and indignation of these students. They insist that the wrong situation must be righted.
The vision that attracts is twofold. Communism makes two promises to these young students. The first promise is that they may participate in a great and successful program of world conquest. The communists claim that their plans are guaranteed success by history itself. They plan to conquer every country and ultimately the entire world. This is a tremendous project. To be a participant in this project would appeal to many people.
The second communist promise is not as well known as the first one. Communism does not regard world conquest as an end in itself. Theoretically at least, they are not just seeking power. World conquest is but a step on the pathway to an even greater goal and that goal is the regeneration of all mankind. They plan the perfection of human nature. They promise the creation of superb human character and intelligence superior to anything mankind has yet known.
Communism promises that when its program is mature, individuals will be so perfect that all the controls that are necessary in the world today will disappear because everyone will work because the impulses of his own nature tell him to work. Everyone will give because it is better to give than to receive. The evil characteristics of human nature so manifest today in the form of greed, lust, cruelty, and selfishness will have disappeared. When human nature has become perfect, then the mechanisms of control such as the police and the military will become unnecessary and disappear. Because everybody is so intrinsically generous and works so skillfully and willingly, universal abundance is created. There is no need for compulsory giving so income tax and everything of that nature disappears. Finally a society of abundance and beauty and harmony is created characterized by the slogan, "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."
It must be stressed that this is the ultimate communist vision which has not been realized anywhere. It is the end point which hypothetically will be reached. It’s a vision which attracts many of these university students. However, the question is not whether the vision is attractive and good, but can it be realized?
The communists say it can and will be realized. They have a program which convinces a number of students. When asked how they propose to change human nature, they say: "By science. Science has transformed the material world in which we live. Science has transformed the world of agriculture, the world of animal husbandry. We’re going to use science to perform its greatest task–to change mankind."
They then proceed to give their three fundamental scientific laws. The first one is, "There is no God." They’re unashamedly atheistic in theory and in practice. When they deny God, they simultaneously deny every virtue and value that originates with God. They wipe the slate clean.
All moral codes are abolished and they’re in a position where they can create a new set of values in tune with their basic beliefs and their future objectives.
The second law is, "Man is a material being–matter in motion, nothing more." He is subject to the laws of chemistry and physics like all other material machines.
The third law is a little more complex. In essence, it states, "The quality of the human mind, human character, and human personality are derived from the prevailing economic environment."
Once you accept these three basic laws, it is easy to believe the argument that the present economic environment of capitalism has created evil human natures and social problems such as misery, war, unemployment, and racial discrimination. Therefore, all the ills of mankind are due to capitalism. It is easy to go from this to the idea that if capitalism could be destroyed, and a new environment was created, all these evils could be eliminated from mankind. Once they are committed to a materialist philosophy, these students are attracted by the idea of being identified with this program of regenerating and remaking mankind. It appeals to their intellectual pride. They are recruited as communists.

THE INDIANA SCHOOL OF ANTI-COMMUNISM
The success of the Indiana School of Anti-Communism, which was held in Indianapolis, November 14, and November 28-December 2, encourages us to conduct more such schools.
      The special features were:

1) TELEVISION
Programs were televised live, over Indianapolis Station WTTV, Channel 4, from 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. They were also televised over Station WFAM, Channel 18, in Lafayette. Lafayette is the home of Purdue University. The response was substantial, widespread, and wholly favorable.
2) CAMPUS SPEAKERS:
Faculty members spoke on a large number of campuses in the area. There was a series of meetings at Indiana University where the New Left was prominent. They were somewhat taken aback by the message of our fine Negro faculty member, Raymond Joseph.
3) COMMUNITY SUPPORT:
The school has the backing of leading citizens of Indiana. The honorary chairmen were two ex-governors, Governor Henry F. Schricker, Democrat, and Governor Harold W. Handley, Republican. The Lilly Endowment contributed $5000 to the expenses of the school. Other businessmen cooperated and worked as a financial committee to raise the extra money needed. A team under the leadership of Floyd and Ruth Burroughs worked diligently and selflessly to do all the necessary chores such as manning phones, transporting speakers, and distributing literature.
4) T.V. SPONSORSHIP:
The television programs were sponsored as a public service by Grob Inc. of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Grob Inc. are the manufacturers of precision machines for the Metal Working Industry. Their products include: Cold rolled gears and splines, band saws, filing machines, rolled bar stock, and the Grob Rainmaker which purifies the water in lakes and fishponds.
We are most grateful to the President of Grob Inc., Ben Grob, for this sponsorship.
If such a school is possible in your city, please contact me and we will try to make the necessary arrangements.
The televised programs are available on film. Featured speakers and subjects are:

Dr. Walter H. Judd, THE WORLD CONFLICT MOVES TO A CLIMAX.
Dr. John W. Drakeford, THE SONG OF SONGS OF COMMUNISM.
Herbert Philbrick, THE NEW LEFT.
Serafin Menocal, LESSONS FROM CUBA.
Dr. Fred Schwarz, WHAT YOU CAN DO.

George Westcott, M.D., Surgeon of Ypsilanti, made first class tape recordings of the lectures at the colleges and high schools and at the public meetings. These lectures are contained on 9 tapes as follows:

A TIME TO GIVE AND RECEIVE
Christmas is giving. God gave Christ to save mankind.
Christmas is receiving. Mary and Joseph received the baby Jesus; the three wise men from the East received the message of the star; the world received the Prince of Peace.
My prayer is that each one of our readers may receive rich and abundance gifts from the hand of God this festive season. I also pray that each may give cheerfully to the cause of God and freedom. I again draw your attention to our special projects:

1) THAILAND. Dr. Joost Sluis leaves for Thailand in January. The challenge is great. It is to devise a program and recruit workers to strip the mask from communism and teach its real nature to the Thai people. If we are successful, we may save thousands of lives.
2) VIETNAM. We want the names of servicemen in Vietnam so that we can send them a letter of appreciation and a copy of the book "You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists)."
3) STUDENTS. We plan to recruit and instruct at least 1000 students to fight communism and collectivism on their campuses. Three summer schools of anti-communism are being scheduled for this purpose. These will be held on the East Coast, in the Midwest, and on the West Coast.

$30,000 of the $100,000 requested has now been received. A special effort is needed to reach out intermediated goal of $50,000 in 1966. Can you make a special donation this year?
Christ gives all an invitation to join His ranks to serve and sacrifice to set men free and to receive His crown.
