COMMUNISM AND RACE RIOTS

“The whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.” St. Paul, Romans 8:22
Dear Friend:

“Racial revolution” has replaced “workers revolution” as the core of the communist plot to conquer the United States. This is the central fact to bear in mind when considering tie wave of race riots currently sweeping the United States.

Those who cannot see the role of the communists in fomenting race strife in the United States are blind. This blindness may be willful or hysterical. It is difficult for those who have minimized the internal communist threat for so long to admit the ugly reality. It places so many of their fond delusions in jeopardy. They have accepted without question the Marxist doctrine that economic conditions create the tensions in society. It appears “intellectual” to discuss the “root causes” of racial tension such as poverty, unemployment, social discrimination, and police brutality. How can they accept the “religious” idea that the cause is to be found in the universal sinfulness of human nature.

It should now be clear that race consciousness has its roots deep in human nature and not merely in the external economic environment. The major race riots have occurred in the areas where the economic and social conditions were the best in the nation. Detroit was the “model city” where the war against poverty had been carried on most energetically. The mayor of Detroit, Jerome P. Cavanagh, was elected with large Negro support. He estimated that he spent up to 3/4’s of his normal 12—14 hour working day on problems of the poor. 28 redevelopment projects were underway in Detroit at a cost of $180 million of which $112 million is Federal funds. Detroit, under Mayor Cavanagh, became the first stop on inspection tours of the nation’s cities by teams studying urban problems and solutions. Nevertheless, the holocaust hit Detroit with hurricane force.

The social and economic conditions in the riot areas have existed for decades. The new element is the professional agitator urging violence and rebellion to the Negro youth. These agitators are usually influenced, if not fully controlled, by the communists.

Conspiracy

Because no evidence of conspiracy may be found in an individual riot, it is often argued that these riots are not part of a larger conspiracy. This is not necessarily true. This can be illustrated by an analogy:

Let us assume that a group of conspirators distributed heat—controlled bombs throughout major cities during the cold weather in February. These bombs are designed so that they will explode when the temperature reaches 95°. During February it is impossible to predict the date when this temperature will first be reached in any given city. Therefore, no one can say precisely when the explosions will break out. When the explosion does come, it can be blamed on the high temperature. Obviously these explosions would not take place if the bombs had not previously been distributed.

Racial agitators advocating violence are in effect distributing bombs in the various ghettos of the cities which will explode in the summer when the appropriate physical and emotional temperature is reached. There are many of these professional agitators throughout the nation. They are members of organizations which include the Black Muslims, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC or SNICK), the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), the Progressive Labor Party (PLP), and the Communist Party U.S.A. The American Communist Party and PLP are open Communist Parties. The Revolutionary Action Movement was founded by a communist, Robert F. Williams, who has directed it from Havana and Peking.

SNCC has openly collaborated with the communists, and their former chairman, Stokely Carmichael, has now thrown off the mask and identified himself with the communists in Cuba while the Black Muslims have been infiltrated by communists such as Charles P. Howard who writes regularly for their newspaper “Muhammad Speaks.”

To state that the riots are fomented by the communists does not mean that the rioting Negroes are consciously revolting against capitalism and for socialism. It means that the communist scientist has observed that Negro racialism can be ignited into revolt and that such a Negro revolt can produce anarchy as a step to communist dictatorship.

Sylvester Leaks, who has long been a fellow traveler of various communist programs and front groups, stated at a “Socialist Scholars Conference” held at Columbus University in September of 1965: “The only group prepared to go to war against the American system was the Negro “lumpen proletariat” but that they didn’t know “socialism from rheumatism.”

The communist exultation over the riots is expressed in the “Worker” on Sunday, July 30, page 3:

“The rebellion of the slums of Detroit, like all previous upsurges, was marked by the ‘liberation’ of foodstuff and needed household appliances and furniture. The picture windows of the stores with their opulent displays of the enormous accumulation of a superabundance of goods, of which the millions of needy Americans—black and white—are deprived, taunt and challenge the prisoners of the slum to an act of re—distribution of some token ‘sharing of the Wealth,’ as it were.

“In truth, the uprising in the slums of the big cities during this month—historically revolutionary July! —renders a dramatic service to the country. It has administered what should be a timely shaking-up of all thoughtful people….

“We urge mass demonstrations to aid the victims of the brutal and heartless military suppression throughout the country, and to demand the Government stop the Vietnam war and mobilize all resources to meet the poverty crisis at home.”

You will note, looting is “liberation” and the villains are the police, national guardsmen, and servicemen who strive to protect lives and property.

The delight of the communists reveals their complete heartlessness towards the Negroes who are the victims of the riots. They rejoice for every Negro killed and rendered homeless. They believe this will increase the militancy of the Negro community and result in bigger and better riots. This communist attitude is in marked contrast with that of the moderate Negro civil rights leadership.
On July 26, four prominent Negroes, Martin Luther King, Jr., A. Phillip Randolph, Roy Wilkins, and Whitney M. Young, Jr., issued a statement which included the following:

“Developments in Newark, Detroit and other strife—torn cities make it crystal clear that the primary victims of the riots are the Negro citizens.

“Who is without the necessities of life when the neighborhood stores are destroyed and looted? Whose children are without milk because deliveries cannot be made?

“Who loses wages because of a breakdown in transportation or destruction of the place of employment? Who are the dead, the injured and the imprisoned? It is the Negroes who pay and pay and pay.

“Killing, arson, looting are criminal acts and should be dealt with as such. Equally guilty are those who incite, provoke and call specifically for such action. There is no injustice which justifies the present destruction of the Negro community and its people.” U.S. News and World Report, August 7, 1967, Page 11.

The Blueprint

How closely the riots are following the blueprint is revealed when we compare what happened in Detroit with what was advocated by Robert F. Williams, the communist founder and director of the Revolutionary Action Movement, who publishes “The Crusader” newsletter. In our newsletter dated September 24, 1965, we published statements by Mr. Williams in “The Crusader” of May-June, 1964.

“The weapons of defense employed by Afroamerican freedom fighters must consist of a poor man’s arsenal. Gasoline fire bombs (Molotov cocktails), Iye or acid bombs (made by injecting lye or acid in the metal end of light bulbs) can be used extensively. During the night hours such weapons, thrown from roof tops, will make the streets impossible for racist cops to patrol. Hand grenades, bazookas, light mortars, rocket launchers, machine guns and ammunition can be bought clandestinely from servicemen, anxious to make a fast dollar. Freedom fighters in military camps can be contacted to give instructions on usage.

“Extensive sabotage is possible. Gas tanks on public vehicles can be choked up with sand. Sugar is also highly effective in gasoline lines. Long nails driven through boards arid tacks with large heads are effective to slow the movement of traffic on congested roads at night. This can cause havoc on turnpikes. Derailing of trains causes panic. Explosive booby traps on police telephone boxes can be employed. High powered sniper rifles are readily available. Armor piercing bullets will penetrate oil storage tanks from a distance. Phosphorus matches (kitchen matches) placed in air conditioning systems will cause delayed explosions which will destroy expensive buildings. Flame throwers can be manufactured at home. Combat experienced ex-service men can easily solve that problem.”

“When massive violence comes, the U.S.A. will become a bedlam of confusion and chaos. The...workers will be afraid to venture out on the streets to report to their jobs.. .Stores will be destroyed and looted.

“Property will be damaged and expensive buildings reduced to ashes... .and all manner of sabotage will occur. Violence and terror will spread like a firestorm. .The new concept is lightning campaigns conducted in highly sensitive urban communities... It dislocates the organs of harmony and order and reduces central power to the level of a helpless, sprawling octopus... rioting takes place... sniping... terror.. .“

As we study the blueprint, it is obvious that the worst is yet to come.
Mr. Williams is continuing his deadly work from Peking. In “The Crusader” of May, 1967, he gives further detailed instruction on methods of sabotage. He does this by means of a conversation with an — old Spanish General who says:

“The enemy saboteurs there worked like termites and there was really nothing we could do about it. Those devils fanned out over the city with newspapers. They twisted them tightly and flushed them down the toilet stools of all the main buildings in the ritzy business districts. All the sewer lines were clogged up and it was a stinking mess... Then they used to carry razor blades into all of the high class restaurants, clubs, and theaters and cut up the upholstery.

remember times when there were many fire alarms because those sabotaging bastards wrapped lit cigarettes in toilet tissue and threw them in waste paper containers after some cohort had preceded him there with a pocket sized bottle or can of gasoline or other inflammable solution and poured t over the waste paper then covered it with dry paper. The smoke really messed up the paint job and often time caused serious damage. By the time the fire really flared the fire team was far from the scene of confusion and repeating the dastard act some place else. Say if one man had a can of tighter fluid, he didn’t carry matches and vice versa. The two were never in the some rest room at the some time. It is unbelievable, the terror and tension caused by these petty little acts of sabotage. Women played a big role in this because there was almost no danger involved for the insurrectionists.

“At night they armed themselves with powerful slingshots and shot steel ingots and bearings from cars. They broke all of the expensive plate glass in the city. The slingshots were silent so we couldn’t immediately ascertain from which direction they were being fired. The culprits escaped. I caught hell but there was nothing I could really do. Some vandals even filed the points of heavy long nails, bent them in a circle so that the keen point would stand upright when thrown from a car or motorcycle and spread them on the main thoroughfares just before the morning rush and traffic was sometimes completely paralyzed. They took candles to the countryside along the highways, lit them and covered them with paper bags, allowing just enough ventilation at the bottom for air to keep the flame burning. After the candle burned low, the flames would reach the dry leaves and grass. By the time the forest fire would start, the scoundrels would be for away from the scene..

What Must Be Done

Let us return to our analogy of a group of conspirators manufacturing and distributing heat—controlled bombs set to ignite when the temperature reaches 95°. One solution which would defeat their plans would be to air condition every city so that the temperature would never reach 950 This is reminiscent of Will Rogers’s suggested solution to the submarine menace during the first world war. He suggested that they boil the ocean. When asked how this could be done, he indignantly replied: “You don’t expect me to supply all the details, do you?”

Those who propose to solve the race problem by changing the social and economic environment alone are as practical as those who would air condition the cities or boil the ocean. It is imperative that injustice be fought and that every effort should be made to provide employment, decent housing, adequate education, and physical security for all citizens including the Negroes. This will not solve the problem, however, of riots stirred by agitators in the conditions which presently exist. To return to our analogy, the manufacturer of the bombs must be stopped and their distribution prevented.

The bomb distributors or race agitators are typified by H. Rap Brown, chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. At Cambridge, Maryland, he spent 45 minutes haranguing Negroes to “burn this town down.” He added, “But don’t tear down your own stuff. When you tear down the white man.., you are hitting him in the money.”

“Don’t love him to death, shoot him to death. Get yourself some guns. This town is ready to explode.”

Specifying the Pine Street Elementary School, Brown said, “You should have burned it down long ago.” A few hours later it was burned to the ground. Two city blocks were razed by fire.

Brown was arrested but immediately released on $10,000 bond. The question immediately suggests itself, “Where would he get the $10,000?” I suspect, but cannot prove that the money comes from communist sources.

Following his release on bond, Brown delivered a speech from the pulpit of St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church in Northwest Washington under the sponsorship of the Rev. William Weridt and with the sanction of the Right Rev. Paul Moore Jr., the Episcopal suffragan bishop of Washington.

He told his perspiring, cheering audience, “Get you some guns. If necessary, burn this town down. “You’ve got to decide for yourself if you kill your enemy because that is an individual decision. But the white man is your enemy. You got to destroy your enemy.

“If you give me a gun and tell me to shoot my enemy, I might shoot Lady Bird.

“I say there should be more shooting than looting so if you loot, loot a gun store.”

On August 2, 1966, Charles Whitman climbed a tower at the University of Texas in Austin and shot to death 15 people. H. Rap Brown and Stokely Carmichael and other agitators are preparing the deaths of far more. Must we wait until more riots have killed more people? Should they not be immobilized and prevented from consummating their campaign of carnage and destruction?

The identification and treatment of the pathological agent is essential for the treatment of an infectious disease. The wave of riots sweeping this country is an infectious epidemic threatening the deaths of thousands of citizens and the destruction of the Republic. The communist agents must be identified and prevented from doing their evil work.

BRITISH GUIANA REVISITED

Dr. Joost Sluis has recently revisited the independent nation of Guyana which was formerly the British colony of British Guiana. The situation in Guyana is paradoxical when compared with that in the United States. The Negroes are the major anti—communist force, whereas the Indians are the major communist force. The reason for this is that the outstanding Indian leader, Cheddi Jagan, is a communist and the Indians vote for him and his party for racial reasons.

At present a Negro, Forbes Burn ham, is the Prime Minister and Jagan is leader of the opposition. There is great danger that this situation will be reversed at the election next year. Due to the high Indian birth rate, the percentage of Indians in the population is constantly increasing. It is already more than 50 per cent. At least 10 per cent of the Indian vote must be stripped from Cheddi Jagan to prevent Guyana from falling into communist hands. This requires an intensive campaign to expose the evil nature of communism to the Indians.

The stakes are very high. A communist country allied with Cuba on the mainland of Latin America with common borders with Venezuela and Brazil is a danger to be feared, and the consciousness of this danger should stimulate to sacrificial action.

PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

There can be little dispute concerning the contribution the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade has already made in the battle against communism. We pioneered in the field of education on the specific nature of communism and its techniques. We conducted schools of anti—communism, encouraged the formation of many anti—communist organizations, and urged individuals to study, form study groups, and become active as citizens in the democratic process. As a consequence, thousands have been alerted, informed, and inspired, and are active in all phases of American life.

Our activity and interest have not been limited to this country, as we have conducted a worldwide education program with the objective of telling the truth about communism to those in danger of being deceived and enslaved by it. Our purpose has been to inform them before they are enslaved and while they can still make a choice.

It has been our constant purpose to maintain the highest standards of intellectual integrity and to avoid personal attacks on individuals. This has not prevented slanderous personal attacks upon us and the Crusade.

Our acceptance in educational circles s illustrated by the following letter:

“I teach at Santo Anci (Junior) College, have been a somewhat passive supporter of your ‘Crusade’ and am reasonably well-read on communism. Recently a ‘Peace Club’ attempted to gain legal status on our campus... It was, of course, a thinly—disguised anti—Vietnam war group... It seems that the other viewpoint, anti—communism, should be better represented for the interested student.

“I have already placed two copies of your book in the library, but I believe your newsletter would be a most worthwhile addition since you analyze so beautifully current events where they have a relation to communism. Will you arrange to send the newsletter directly to the college library? The head librarian has already agreed to the idea.

“While I have not investigated other anti-communist groups, the CACC really makes sense to me-- particularly the sensible, non—wild—eyed view that you and the Crusade represent.”

Our financial survival has been a recurring miracle. It is not easy to raise $50,000 every month. The need must be constantly drawn to the attention of our constituency. So many worthy causes are competing for support these days that it is difficult for individuals to know where to give. Most cannot possibly respond to all the appeals they receive.

It remains true that the “wheel which squeaks gets the grease.” I know you will pardon us for doing a little “squeaking.” Our work is unique and merits support. Regular support is the most valuable.

During July our income took a turn upwards. Please continue this trend during August which threatens to be the month of maximum enemy activity.

We continue confidently knowing the truth of the promise, “When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will raise up a standard against him.”

Yours very sincerely,

Fred Schwarz
