| LOMAX, THE RACKET BUSTER Dear Friend: “I happen to believe the nongovernmental groups fighting Communism border on nothing short of a racket. My first guest is the leader of such a group, the Christian Anti—Communist Crusade. His name is Dr. Fred Schwarz.” With these words, Louis Lomax introduced me during an interview which appeared on KTTV, Channel 11, in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday evening, February 19, at 10:30 p.m. I invited him to justify his charge of racketeering. He claimed that I received an income from the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade which of itself seemed to him to justify his charge. He appeared unaware that by this criterion every preacher, school teacher and civil rights’ leader, who receives a salary for his work, is a racketeer. Where does this leave his friend, Martin Luther King? For those who are unfamiliar with Louis Lomax, a word of introduction is in order. He is a Negro intellectual, renowned as an author, orator, and television personality. He classifies himself as a convinced liberal and rarely loses an opportunity to ridicule conservatives. He conducts a television program of the interview type each Thursday and Sunday evening over KTTV, Channel 11, in Los Angeles. This program is currently being syndicated to other television stations. I confessed that I had little hope of convincing him that the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade was not a racket. Since a man’s judgments are formed not only by the evidence, but also by his own nature, the task appeared hopeless. It is impossible for an individual who is dominated by avarice to understand the character and motives of another individual who sacrifices financial profit for principle. Nothing reveals the true nature of a man more clearly than his judgment of the motives of others. This was illustrated by our Lord when He said, “With what judgments ye judge, ye shall be judged.” Matt. 7:2 For the benefit of the unbiased and truth—seeking members of the audience, I did point out that as a medical doctor I had experienced no difficulty in earning a good income in Australia. My income was greater before the formation of the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade than it has ever been since. I also pointed out the case of Dr. Joost Sluis, Vice President of the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade. Dr. Sluis has willingly sacrificed the income that would normally be earned by an orthopedic surgeon for a comparative pittance as a worker in the cause of freedom. If he devoted himself to his surgical practice, he could easily earn five times his present income. THE SMEAR TECHNIQUE When the evil and the sordid wish to discredit the honorable and the good, the simplest method is to launch charges against their financial motives and operation. No evidence is needed to support these charges. The hostile will certainly believe them without evidence, and many uninformed tend to believe them because greed, which is part of human nature, conditions them to accept such smears. They know that if they were acting like the accused, they would be doing it for personal gain. This method of attack has been used extensively against the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade. Rarely is a hostile article written which does not contain this libel. Out of the myriad examples of this technique, I will quote the following: 1. The Communist Party of Russia depicted me as being paid by big businessmen to promote thermonuclear war so that the businessmen would receive profits from the sale of arms. 2. Harry Bridges, during his debate with me in 1962, made three contradictory charges concerning the use of the funds of the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade: a) The funds were used for my personal enrichment. 3. Stanley Mosk, then Attorney General of California, characterized our workers as “Patriots for Profit.” I invited Louis Lomax to audit the books of the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade. If he employed a legitimate auditor, the Crusade would be assured of one more friend. The Crusade has been audited by the Federal Government and the State of California on more than one occasion. We have won friends and supporters each time. THE CRUSADE RECORD As I survey the record of the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade since 1953, I can state with a clear conscience that the money invested by our friends and supporters has reaped remarkable dividends. It is no exaggeration to claim that millions of people have been informed of the nature of communism through our work. Thousands of individuals involved in organizations currently fighting communism were first recruited and inspired by our programs. Our message has permeated the literature and ideology of large groups in education, religion, business, and civic work. We have made significant contributions to communist setbacks in such countries as India, British Guiana, Brazil, and Chile. All this has been done by an investment which is microscopic compared to the vast sums the government is spending. The present expenditure in Vietnam is nearly $50 million a day. The present expenditure of the Crusade is about $50 thousand per month. SHOULD WE SPEND MONEY OUTSIDE THE U.S.A.? We receive and accept criticism from our friends as well as from our opponents. Sometimes good supporters protest that we spend some of our funds outside the United States. They state that if the United States succumbs to communist supervision or collapses into anarchy because of moral breakdown, the world battle against communism is irretrievably lost. For this reason they believe that all funds should be spent within the United States. While agreeing with their premise, I disagree with the conclusion. The communist program for the conquest of the United States is, “External encirclement, plus internal demoralization, leads to progressive surrender.” The battle must be fought against the encircling communist enemies as well as against the internal enemies of subversion and demoralization. INDIA As I write this, elections have just taken place in India. We cannot be indifferent to the fate of 400 million Indian people. We have been actively supporting Christian and anti-Communist workers in India since 1956. The two states in which most of our efforts have been concentrated are Kerala and Andhra. Kerala was formerly under communist control but the communists were defeated. We are supporting a daily newspaper and hundreds of individuals who are working to expose and defeat communism there. The situation in Kerala is critical. Since 1956, the work in Andhra State has been under the direction of Ch. Devananda Rao. This brief letter from him has just arrived: “Conducting very successful anti—communist campaigns all over Andhra along with the V.I.P.‘s. I am almost a transit passenger from one end of Andhra to the other. All well at home. Shall write more after these final election fights. Communists in Andhra will definitely be defeated. Gratefully remembering the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade for sacrificial assistance and prayers. Please continue to pray.” THE COMMISSION OF CHRIST We are the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade and must obey the directives of Christ. He gave the great commission, “Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature.” In obedience to the spirit of this commission, we have tried to disseminate the truth of the Christian Gospel and the true story of the atheistic enmity of communism to this Gospel, in all countries. Christ also demands concern for the temporal well—being of the sick and the suffering. He says, “For I was hungry, and ye gave Me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave Me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took Me not in: naked, and ye clothed Me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited Me not., Then shall they also answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when saw we Thee hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto Thee?’ Then shall He answer them saying, ‘Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to Me.’ “ Matt. 26:42-45 We have tried to obey our Lord. When fire destroyed many villages in India, we helped the victims. Devananda Rao writes: “You will be happy to know that besides the cash gifts, we have distributed the binny blankets to the thousand families who were the victims of the fires last summer.” We support the Indian Christian Orphanage which is conducted
by Mrs. Rao and which now has 90 children. These children may be adopted
by foster parents who choose to support them for $10 a month. Devanarida Rao also writes: “We were greatly honored by the visit of the Deputy Minister for Health of India, the Honorable Shri B. S. Murthy. He visited our boys, spoke with them, distributed the Christmas gifts to them and had lunch with us.” DEPUTY MINISTER FOR HEAL INDIA NEW DELHI December 29, 1966 Dear Devanarxia Rao, I am grateful to you and Mrs. Devanarda Rao for the happy time myself, Shri Madhava Rao and others spent with you over a delicious and royal Christmas lunch on 25th of this month. As usual your lunch was of the feudal order, tasteful and tempting. I was happy to meet the children of your Orphanage and speak to them of the fathomless love of Lord Jesus for humanity. Please inform Mrs. Devananda Rao that the sweets she made was very delicious. My God bless you all! ( B.S. Murthy ) BAD NEWS The Communist State Government will be restrained by the
Federal Government so it will not be able to impose maximum terror. Nevertheless,
the plight of the anti-communist workers is serious and they need our
prayer and support. Lecture 6--COMMUNIST TRAINING Communism claims to be a scientific program for the regeneration of mankind and the perfection of human society. It’s not surprising that such a claim may sound impressive to young student idealists questing for a noble purpose and goal in life. Students are frequently a strange mixture of intellectual materialism and emotional idealism. Their emotional idealism makes them very sensitive to the ills in the world around them. Their intellectual materialism makes them susceptible to a neat argument based on materialistic foundations and allegedly scientific processes which promises to produce human perfection. Students are often recruited by four basic forces. The first of these forces is disenchantment with the capitalist system; the second is materialistic philosophy; the third is intellectual pride; while the fourth is an unfulfilled religious need. DISENCHANTMENT WITH CAPITALISM The student is convinced that capitalism is basically evil and incurably diseased. Karl Marx developed a very neat argument which allegedly proves that by the operation of the capitalist system an inevitable cycle develops which results in recurrent depression and war. This is due to profit which Marx called the surplus value of labor. Therefore, depression and war are the children of capitalism. As long as capitalism continues, according to this argument, recurrent depression and war must afflict mankind. Therefore, if you are against depression and war, you must be against capitalism. Whitaker Chambers, who became a communist during the depression years while he was a very intelligent student and later repented, said that every intelligent person of his acquaintance who became a communist did so in terms of the argument that capitalism is the parent of depression and war. A corollary of this argument is very effective throughout the world particularly in the underdeveloped countries. Students there survey the backwardness and poverty of their own country and find a very convenient explanation of why conditions are so bad. They claim that it is the result of American imperialism which is the manifestation of capitalism. They claim that American capitalism has drained the fruits of labor from these countries through economic colonialism and, therefore, the American system is responsible for the poverty and backwardness of most countries of the world. This argument is very powerful in recruiting the students in the underdeveloped countries to communism. The argument is obviously false because those countries in which capitalism has not been present and which are not colonies, have conditions which are as bad or even worse than those which characterize the countries in which colonialism has been present and capitalist investments have been made. Nevertheless, it is a very powerful argument with angry young students and angry young men. The first feature of communist recruitment of the intellectuals is disenchantment with capitalism. MATERIALISTIC PHILOSOPHY The second force of communist recruitment is materialistic philosophy. Having renounced belief in God, students are in a position to believe that scientific methods alone can perfect mankind and thus perfect society. If the present environment has created the evil in human nature, a selected environment can create a selected character and selected personality. A rationale for human perfection is provided. The program of the communists which consists of destroying the capitalist system, seizing all power, and forcibly creating a regenerative environment is persuasive. It makes sense. The student succumbs to the rationale and the vision. INTELLECTUAL PRIDE The third force that recruits the student is intellectual pride. They are very conscious of the brilliance of their own intellect. They are grappling with ideas. They observe the majority of the people of the world who seem content to accept the traditions that surround them and concentrate on social life and pleasure and such things as getting a fine home and raising a family and they are filled with contempt. They believe that they are in tune with the great minds of history and because of the superiority of their intelligence, they are historically ordained to the great and difficult task of destroying the curse of mankind, the capitalist system. They will then be able to create the environment which will perfect and regenerate mankind. They have a sense of the messianic grandeur of their destiny. Some idea of this messianic sense of the true communist is given in the speech of Joseph Stalin on the death of Lenin when he said: “Comrades, we communists are people of a special stuff. We are made from a special mold. We are those who form the army of the great international proletarian strategist, the army of Comrade Lenin. There is no greater honor than the honor of belonging to such an army. There is no greater title than the title ‘Member of the Party’ whose founder and leader was Comrade Lenin. It is not given to everyone to be a member of such a party. It is not given to everyone to withstand the stresses and strains that come from membership in such a party. It is the sons of the working class, the sons of want and struggle, the Sons of incredible privation and heroic effort who before all should be members of such a party. That is why the party of the communists, the party of the Leninists, is called the party of the working class. “Departing from us, Comrade Lenin adjured us to hold high the honor of the title ‘Member of the Party.’ We vow to thee, Comrade Lenin, we shall fulfill thy behest with credit.” This concept of belonging to the finest, greatest, and most powerful organization, of being part of the collective intellect in tune with the purposes of history, appeals to the intellectual pride of many of these students and makes them susceptible to recruitment to communism. UNFULFILLED RELIGIOUS NEED The fourth force of communist recruitment is unfulfilled religious need. “Man shall not live by bread alone.” The society that provides all the material wants of life such as food, clothing, shelter, and transportation in abundance s not enough. Man needs a goal, a purpose, an inspiration, something to give meaning to life. Man is born with a quest for the infinite and usually this manifests itself in religious experience. When the doors of religious experience have been closed by atheism and materialism, the need for personal fulfillment still remains. These religious needs are partially met by membership in the Communist Party, the mystic union of the finer intellects who are made into one body. This body is responsible for the fulfillment of history’s purpose. THE ANTIDOTE Once the forces of communist recruitment are understood it is possible to devise a program to frustrate them. Students should be taught the essential virtues of capitalism instead of concentrating on faults which are being progressively rectified. They must renounce materialist philosophy and be encouraged in intellectual humility and understanding of the limitations of the human mind. They should be taught that no human should have absolute power and control over others because human nature is weak and sinful and such authority corrupts. Finally a religious faith and deep religious fulfillment is most desirable. The communists, once recruited, dedicate themselves to the Communist Party. They surrender their personal ambitions, their lives, and even their thoughts become the property of the Communist Party. The Chinese Communist theorist, Liu Shao-Chi, has stated in his book “How To Be A Good Communist” that the communists absolutely and unconditionally subordinate their personal interests to the party’s interests under all circumstances. The student is recruited, and he dedicates himself to the Communist Party. He is disciplined and trained by the Communist Party so that he can go forth as a leader to put the communist program into operation. As the communist scientist, he now utilizes social forces to advance communism to power. A CRY FOR HELP It is tragic when the idealism, which burns like a flame in many students, is channeled into the service of communist subversion. This tragedy occurs all too often, but it can be prevented. One student who entered the service of communism was Phillip Abbott Luce. He has written an article which appears in the February edition of Reader’s Digest, entitled “What the ‘New Left’ Did to Me.” He traces his progress from a middle—class home, through Mississippi and Ohio State Universities, into communism, and his final disillusionment and defection. His summation should serve as a resonant cry for help for millions of students: “I think often that I might have been spared the wasted years if my schooling had included the study of communism——not as a beguiling doctrine through its sacred texts, but as living history on view in Soviet Russia and Red China and in the story of its many mass deceptions and manipulations in the Free World. It seems incredible that I could have acquired a graduate degree in political science without having been encouraged to read ‘Witness’ by Whittaker Chambers, ‘The God That Failed’ by Arthur Koestler and others, ‘Child of the Revolution’ by Wolfgang Leonhard, and ‘The Red Decade’ by Eugene Lyons.” Page 97. We can answer this cry for help by providing suitable literature and conducting schools of anti— communism for students. The following letter speaks clearly: “I have just finished reading ‘You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists)’ a second time. It is undoubtedly the most effective anti—communist book in print in my opinion. After finishing it, I had a burning desire to put it in the hands of as many ‘liberals’ as I could find as well as those uninformed. I am President of the Boston University Young Americans for Freedom, and I wonder if you could donate a few hundred of these books to my chapter.” Don A. Fedder, Boston University. We sent the books air freight. We are anticipating great things from our summer schools of anti—communism for students, They are planned for the East Coast, the Midwest, and the West Coast. Details will be published soon. Have you sent your donation for these schools? We have
received $35,000 of the $100,000 needed, Please catch the vision, face
the responsibility, and send your contribution. Dr. Sluis is presently in the guerrilla—infested northeast portion of Thailand, and we await his report from this area with great interest. Thus far his visit has been fruitful beyond our expectations. This is revealed by the following extracts from his letters: “Today I had my most fruitful interview to date with the Thai Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thonat Khoman. He pledged the fullest cooperation of him and his staff and asked to be placed on our regular mailing list. I gave him a full set of your 14 messages and Janet’s songs, a copy of ‘You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists),’ and 6 recent newsletters. He plans to translate the messages into Thai for radio and possibly television. He is also interested in translating and distributing the book. I received letters of introduction from him to the governors of both the North and Northeast. “Most of the visit was devoted to a discussion of communism. He volunteered that the Thai government was presently occupied with the important and practical problems of subversion and guerrilla warfare and was probably giving too little attention to theory and doctrine. Points of great interest to him were: “1. Recent events at the University of California at Berkeley including the election of Bettina Aptheker and the dismissal of Dr. Clark Kerr. He was fascinated by the parallel between the situation at the University of Caracas and the potential situation at the University of California at Berkeley. “2. The history of internal party conflict which has characterized the Communist Party since its origin. “3. The worldwide interpretation of the victory of Stalin over Trotsky in Russia as the triumph of moderation. Earlier this week at a press interview he had pointed out that the present conflict in China was not between a ‘hard’ and a ‘soft’ line but between a ‘hard’ and a ‘harder’ line. “4. The fact that Marxism—Leninism is a ‘science’ of deception and that, therefore, there is a great need for truth and understanding while people still have a choice.” “On February 11, I met with General Netr Khemayodhin, the Undersecretary of State. He heads Thailands’s 8 universities which have a total full—time student enrollment of 40,000. I gave him a copy of ‘You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists)’ and outlined our program in l963, of distributing Portuguese translations of this book to every university student in Brazil. He immediately suggested that we send a Thai translation to every student in Thailand.” The doors of opportunity are open. We now have the responsibility to take full advantage of them. I pass the challenge on to you to provide the financial support needed for this task. With $50,000 we can achieve miracles. We have no support from the government so, if you fail, there is no one else to whom we can turn. I am confident you will not fail. With Christian love, |
