THE ATTRACTIVE FACE OF THE UNITED STATES

Dear Friend:

“A visitor from another country could not believe there is any racial problem in the United States.” This was the comment of my son John as we walked from the Los Angeles Coliseum following the football match between the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday evening, September 1.

John had never seen an American football match although he is both a player and an enthusiastic fan of the game of “rugby” which is played in Australia, so we took the opportunity to correct this cultural deficiency by attending the Rams—Chiefs contest.

Los Angeles was in the throes of a heat wave and we perspired freely as the car slowed to a crawl in the dense traffic near the coliseum. We solved the parking problem by driving through a narrow driveway into a parking lot behind a residential building in a lane off Hoover Avenue. We were in a Negro area or “ghetto.” As we walked the few blocks to the grounds, the streets were lined with drugstores and storefront churches. Black children played everywhere.

At the Coliseum, both the football teams and the crowd were thoroughly integrated. To reach our seats, we had to clamber over about a dozen Negro fans. They submitted to this misfortune cheerfully. Seated next to me was a black man with a small beard. He would not have been in the front runners of a beauty competition, but be was an enthusiastic expert on American football, and throughout the match be courteously kept us informed of the records of the players and the finer points of the game. The densely—packed crowd all around us, consisting as it did of black and white, old and young, male and female, was the epitome of smiling good will.

As we walked from the grounds, John made his remark concerning how difficult it was to believe that there was any racial problem in the United States. I immediately thought of American visitors to Moscow and Hanoi and how irrelevant their observations must be and what little significance should be attached to their reports. Even if an individual moves around freely throughout a country, judgments are superficial in the extreme.

We walked bock to the place where we had parked the car and found a crowd of 30 or 40 people waiting patiently and chatting amiably. Every inch of space had been utilized for parking and this included the narrow driveway leading from the street to the parking lot behind the residence. The front car was locked and the driver had failed to arrive so all the other cars were trapped.

The crowd waited patiently until midnight. Approximately half were black and half were white. They talked and laughed together as a group. I did not hear one angry or bitter word spoken.

Finally someone managed to insert a hook, made from a wire coat hanger, above the window and unlocked the car door. We pushed it to a safe parking area on the street. We entered our cars, waved goodbye to each other, and dispersed.

There is an enormous reservoir of good will between black and white in the United States. Friendship is the companion of shared interests. Driving home I felt a warm glow of optimism for the future. I wondered what Rapp Brown or Stokely Carmichael would have done in such a crowd.

Racial violence is not inevitable. Race hatred is not spontaneous; it is artificially created. The race agitators must be isolated and restrained.

The better side of race relations within the United States should be given as much publicity as the demented ravings of hate—filled bigots and the riots that ensue.

One example of racial harmony is the person and work of Archie Moore, the great Negro boxer, who is retired light heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Recently he wrote in-the San Diego Union of Tuesday, August 8, 1967:

GUIDE OR MISGUIDE

Archie Moore Points the Way

The devil is at work in America, and it is up to us to drive him out. Snipers and looters, white or black, deserve no mercy. Those who would profit from their brother’s misfortunes deserve no mercy, and those who would set fellow Americans upon each other deserve no mercy.

I’ll fight the man who calls me an “Uncle Tom.” I have broken bread with heads of state, chatted with presidents and traveled all over the world. I was born in a ghetto, but I refused to stay there. I am a Negro, and proud to be one. I am also an American, and I’m proud of that.

The young people of today think they have a hard lot. They should have been around in the ‘3Os when I was coming up in St. Louis. We had no way to go, but a lot of us made it. I became light heavyweight champion of the world. A neighbor kid down the block, Clark Terry, became one of the most famous jazz musicians in the world. There were doctors, lawyers and chiefs who came out of that ghetto. One of the top policemen in St. Louis came from our neighborhood.

We made it because we had a goal, and we were willing to work for it. Don’t talk to me of your “guaranteed national income.” Any fool knows that this is insanity. Do we bring those who worked to get ahead down to the level of those who never gave a damn? The world owes NOBODY --black or white —- a living. God helps the man who helps himself!

Now then, don’t get the idea that I didn’t grow up hating the injustices of this world. I am a staunch advocate of the Negro revolution for the good of mankind. I’ve seen almost unbelievable progress made in the last handful of years. Do we want to become wild beasts bent only on revenge, looting and killing and laying America bare? Hate is bait, bait for the simpleminded.

Sure, I despised the whites who cheated me, but I used that feeling to make me push on. If you listen to the professional rabble-rousers, adhere to this idea of giving up everything you’ve gained in order to revenge yourself for the wrongs that were done to you in the past then you’d better watch your neighbor, because he’ll be looting your house next. Law and order is the only edge we have. No man is an island.

Granted the Negro still has a long way to go to gain a fair shake with the white man in this country. But believe this: if we resort to lawlessness, the only thing we can hope for is civil war, untold bloodshed, and the end of our dreams.

We have to have a meeting of qualified men of both races. Mind you, I said qualified men, not some punk kid, ranting the catch phrases put in his mouth by some paid hate-monger. There are forces in the world today, forces bent upon the destruction of America, your America and mine. And while we’re on the subject, do you doubt for a minute that communism, world communism, isn’t waiting with bated breath for the black and white Americans to turn on each other full force? Do you want a chance for life, liberty and pursuit of happiness in the land of your birth, or do you want no chance at all under the Red heel?

Africa’s a Great Place to Visit

There are members of the black community who call for a separate nation within America. Well, I do not intend to give up one square inch of America. I’m not going to be told I must live in a restricted area. Isn’t that what we’ve all been fighting to overcome? And then there is the element that calls for a return to Africa.

For my part, Africa is a great place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there. If the Irishmen want to go back to the Emerald Isle, let them. If the Slays want to return to the Iron Curtain area, OK by me. But I’m not going to go to any port of Africa to live. I’m proud of ancestry, and of the country that spawned my forefathers, but I’m not giving up my country. I fought all my life to give my children what I’m able to give them today; a chance for development as citizens in the greatest country in the world.

I do not for a moment think that any truly responsible Negro wants anarchy. I don’t think you’ll find intelligent—no, let’s rephrase that—mature Negroes running wild in the streets or sniping at total strangers. God made the white man as well as the black. True, we haven’t acted as brothers in the past, but we are brothers. If we’re to be so many Coins and Abels, that’s our choice. We can’t blame God for.

Teach That ‘Any Boy Can’

Something must be done to reach the Negroes and the whites in the ghettos of this country, and I propose to do something.

As a matter of plain fact, I have been doing something for the past several years. I have been running a program which I call the ABC -- Any Boy Con. By teaching our youth, black, white, yellow and red, what dignity is, what self respect is, what honor is, I have been able to obliterate juvenile delinquency in several areas.

I would now expand my program, change scope. If any boy can, surely any man can. I want to take teams of qualified people, top men in their fields, to the troubled areas of our cities. I know that the people who participated in the recent riots, who are participating and who will participate, are misguided rather than mad.

If some bigot can misguide, then I can guide. I’ve spent too much of my life building what I’ve got to put it to torch just to satisfy some ancient hatred of a man who beat my grandfather. Those men are long dead. Do we have to choke what could be a beautiful garden with weeds of hate? I say NO! And I stand ready to start “Operation Gardener.” I invite the respected Negro leaders of our country to join me.

WHAT IS COMMUNISM?

Lecture 9- DICTATORSHIP OF THE PROLETARIAT

The immediate communist objective is the seizure of power and the establishment of communist government. They have frankly told us the nature of this government that they propose to establish, and history has recorded that they have been true to their word wherever they have been successful in seizing power.

Lenin called the government the communists proposed to set up the “dictatorship of the proletariat.” He wrote books describing in considerable detail how this dictatorship was to operate. The communists openly proclaim that they propose to set up a dictatorship once they are in power.

Lenin defined the “dictatorship of the proletariat” as “the rule, based on force and unrestricted by law of the proletariat over the bourgeoisie; the rule enjoying the sympathy and support of the toiling and exploited masses.”

Force

The first feature of this dictatorship is that it is based on force. It is government by coercion, not with the consent of the government. It is a forceful, brutal dictatorship.

Unrestricted by Law

The second feature about communist government is that it is unrestricted by law. When laws are passed within this system they do not apply to the government. They merely regulate the conduct of the people who are under the control of the communist government. This is a very sinister feature of the communist system.

The history of civilization is the history of the restraint of government by law. Government un-restrained by law is naked tyranny. Government depends upon force. Government is force. That great American libertarian and president, Thomas Jefferson, once said, “Government, like fire, is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.”

In a constitutional republic, a constitution limits the power of government and protects certain of the rights and liberties of the citizens. This is the basic function of a constitution. It guarantees limited government. It says to the authorities, “thus far you can go and no further.”

Where there is no limitation on the power of government, it automatically becomes a tyranny. Communism is a tyranny because the power of the government is not restricted by the law.

The Constitution of the Soviet Union

The Soviet Union claims to have a constitution. It has a document which it calls the Constitution of the Soviet Union. If you read this document it reads very well indeed. It announces that the people have every conceivable liberty. However, it is a very deceitful document because it is not truly a constitution as it does not restrain the power of the government. It calls itself a constitution but it is not such in the true sense of the word because a constitution is something that legally restrains the government from excessive exercise of power. The so-called Constitution of the Soviet Union is a document designed to deceive the gullible.

The Dictator

Who is to exercise this unlimited power? Who is to be the. ruler? To use the force? To be completely free from any legal restraints? The definition states it is the proletariat who exercises the dictatorship while the subjects of the dictatorship are the bourgeoisie.

The proletariat is a very large body of people. Obviously it cannot exercise dictatorship directly so the Communist Party volunteers to exercise this dictatorship on behalf of the proletariat. The Communist Party believes that it is the brain of the proletariat, the mind of the proletariat, the vanguard of the proletariat, and that history has appointed it to act on behalf of the proletariat. It believes that the proletariat gives the Communist Party insight concerning its wishes and best interests. Thus the Communist Party has the responsibility of exercising this dictatorship on behalf of the proletariat.

The proletariat has no voice either in the selection or the control of the Communist Party. The people are voiceless since they do not have a vote. This dictatorship claims to possess the sympathy and support of the toiling and exploited masses but it has never allowed a free vote. The communists have never permitted a free vote in any country under their control.

In 1917 the Communist Party established their dictatorship within Russia. Today that same Communist Party exercises the same dictatorship. No choice and no alternative is permitted to the Russian people.

While the dictatorship claims to be the Dictatorship of the Proletariat actually it is the dictatorship of the Communists over the Proletariat.

The Communist Party is a small minority of the people. For example, today in the Soviet Union, the Communist Party constitutes only between three and four per cent of the population of that great country. If all the members of the Communist Party were involved in making decisions on behalf of the people, only a small minority would possess political freedom. Actually, by the structure of the Communist Party, the vital decisions are made by a tiny handful of men and frequently by one man Thus we have the Dictatorship of the Central Committee; the Dictatorship of the Politburo, or the Dictatorship of the Leader over the Proletariat.

Communism sets up this brutal dictatorship. It reverses the currents of history, making them flow away from human liberty. It degrades the function and role of government within society. And it attempts to justify the dictatorship by the doctrine that the Communist Party is the brain and mind of the proletariat while the bourgeoisie is a hostile enemy force that must be controlled and destroyed before political liberty can be widespread.

According to communist theory, the period of the dictatorship of the proletariat is merely temporary. While the Dictatorship of the Proletariat prevails, there is Socialism, not Communism.

Socialism

Socialism is the name given to the economic system of the intermediate period between the revolutionary seizure of power by the communists and the emergence of regenerate communist man. This is the stage which they claim exists today in Russia, China, and other communist-ruled countries. Communism lies in the future.

Under socialism everyone is forced to work and work hard, and they are rewarded in terms of the work they do. It is important to realize that the communists use the term socialism quite differently from many other people. The slogan of socialism according to the communists is “From each according to his ability, to each according to his work.”

Communism

Once this new environment created by the communists has destroyed capitalism, liquidated the remaining capitalists, given new experiences to the babies and the young, new characters will be created and the dictatorship will wither and die and the classless society will emerge. It will be characterized by abundance and perfect happiness. There will be no government. This will be the era of communism. The slogan of this communist era will be “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.” Such is the theory.

The communist reality is lawless, brutal dictatorship exercised by a handful of men and it is sustained by a promise of future perfection that will not be fulfilled.

DIALOGUE IN ST. LOUIS--October 16

The convention of the Disciples of Christ will be held in St. Louis, Missouri, in mid—October. An event of unusual interest and significance is scheduled during this conference.

The Department of Christian Action and Community Service has suggested that a “dialogue” be conducted on October 16, on the subject “Christianity and Communism——Dialogue or ?” The participants in this dialogue will be: Dr. Howard Schomer, Executive Director, Specialized Ministries Department, National Council of Churches, and Dr. Fred Schwarz.

The organizers state, “We want real differences between the two positions to clearly emerge. We have no interest in a kind of watered—down agreement that ‘We are all against communism.’

The subjects suggested for discussion are:

1. There is general agreement that the Christian faith stands in judgment on all political and economic systems.

Specifically, what is the Christian critique of communism as a political and economic system?

2. There is general agreement that certain changes have taken place in communism in the last 20 years. While reports of these changes may vary, they have to do with such matters as freedom of expression, freedom for religion, a less doctrinaire application of economic policies in favor of a more pragmatic approach, and a lessening of the monolithic nature of world communism resulting in both competing and cooperating communist states.

How do you evaluate any changes which have occurred and what are their implications for a Christian stance toward communism?

3. Individual Christians have voiced vastly differing ideas of what we should do about communism and communists. These have varied from one extreme of a recommendation to drop the atomic bomb on China and Russia to the other extreme of suggesting that communism is a valid political- economic system for Christians to support.

Specifically, what do you think Christians in the United States, acting individually and/or corporately, should do about domestic and international communists and communism?

The moderator will be Dr. W. A. Welsh, President, Lexington Theological Seminary, Lexington, Kentucky. There will be a panel of questioners and audience participation. The function will begin with dinner in the King Louis IX Room, 2nd Floor, Union Station, St. Louis, Missouri, at 5:30 p.m., on Monday, October 16.

The price of the dinner is $2.95 per person.

This should prove a most interesting evening. This is the first opportunity we have had to present our viewpoint at a convention of a major religious denomination. Those who have heard of this opportunity are so interested that delegations are planned from surrounding states.

There are 155 tickets available for this dinner and dialogue. If you wish to attend, please write immediately and your place will be reserved as long as tickets last.

A GOOD IDEA

“I have just completed an unofficial mailing of ‘You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists)’ to members of my American Legion Post. I wish every post in America would follow suit.”

TROUBLE IN THAILAND

The serious situation in Thailand is described in the Peking Review, August 18, 1967. The article is introduced by a quotation from Mao Tse—tung:

“Experience in the class struggle in the era of imperialism teaches us that it is only by the power of the gun that the working class and the labouring masses can defeat the armed bourgeoisie and landlords; in this sense we may say that only with guns can the whole world be transformed.”

The article states: “The first shot fired in the Thai people’s armed struggle took place on August 7, two years ago. Since then, led by the Communist Party of Thailand, the people’s forces have smashed repeated ‘mopping-up’ operations launched by the Thanom—Praphas clique. They have dealt U.S. imperialism and its lackeys heavy blows and have grown in strength. In two years, they have fought over 500 battles and wiped out more than 1,000 enemies. Of these 977 were killed or wounded and 26 captured.

“From November last to June 4, they fought 172 battles with reactionary troops and police, attacked and ambushed the enemy on 62 occasions and wiped out 258 of them, nc-tuding some local reactionary officials. In addition, they killed or wounded 81 secret agents. They also seized from the enemy a large quantity of weapons which they used to equip themselves.

“In two years, the guerrilla war has spread over the northern, northeastern, southern and central parts of Thailand to include 25 of the country’s 71 provinces. Now the people’s forces are mobilizing the peasant masses for the development and expansion of the guerrilla bases. The peasants are supplying them with grain. They have also led the masses in struggling against thugs and local despots. This has won the peasants’ hearty support.

“Chairman Mao’s brilliant theories on the establishment of rural bases and using the villages to surround the cities and ‘political power grows out of the barrel of a gun’ have shown their great vitality in Thailand. From their own experience, the Thai people have come to see that they can liberate themselves only by taking up arms and fighting a people’s war.” Page 39.

It would be foolish to accept as completely accurate all the statements in this article. It would be even more foolish to ignore the existence of the “people’s war” being waged in Thailand and to wait until the conflict has assumed the magnitude of the war in Vietnam.

The Rev. James Colbert, Chairman of the Board of the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade, will visit both Vietnam and Thailand after attending the Congress of the World Anti—Communist League in Formosa from September 25—29. We must increase both the scope and efficiency of our educational outreach in these countries.

INDONESIA

The communists have suffered a shattering defeat in Indonesia during the past two years. This is shown by the fact that an Indonesian representative will be present at the World Ant—Communist League Congress in Formosa.

The communists never give up. They have regrouped the remnants of their forces and have commenced armed struggle in the rural areas, according to a report in the Peking Review, August 25, 1967.

“A unit of the people’s armed forces fought a fierce battle against the reactionary army in Ninggil village, on March 5 this year. Prior to the ena9ement, this unit held ‘a heavily—guarded review1 at Ninggil, executed a number of the local reactionary officials and removed material to the nearby mountains and forests.

“There is no doubt that they will hold high the great banner of Marxism—Leninism, Mao Tse—tung’s thought, rely on and mobilize the peasant masses, develop revolutionary armed struggle, establish revolutionary base areas in the countryside and step by step carry the revolution forward to final victory.” Page 30.

CHALLENGE!

We are mailing a copy of “You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists)” by Dr. Fred Schwarz and the “Road to Revolution” by Phillip Abbott Luce to approximately 10,000 Negro ministers in the United States. These ministers exercise enormous influence on the Negro community. These books will reveal the true nature of communism and the communist plan to exploit the Negroes by provoking racial rebellion and reducing the United States to anarchy and chaos.
We have now been challenged to send copies of the books to every Negro newspaper in the United States. There is little need to stress the power of the Negro press for good or evil.

This challenge has been accepted, and we now issue a challenge to our constituency to contribute the funds needed for these and similar prolects. This special project will cost $10,000 which is additional to the maintenance of our regular work. It is a continuous struggle to secure the $50,000 needed each month. We have survived the summer by the narrowest of margins and our working funds are exhausted. We anticipate and require increased support for the remainder of the year.

There are ominous rumblings of a long, cold winter to follow the long, hot summer. The Negro revolutionaries are discussing how they can select a stormy day, when the National Guard and the Army will be immobilized, for rioting and looting. Stokely Carmichael has bragged to the Algerians that since the Negroes constitute a majority of the citizens of Washington, D.C., they can surround and capture the Pentagon.

To carry out these boasts, the violent revolutionaries must terrorize and control the Negro communities. This is the phase of the revolution on which they are presently concentrating.

The law-abiding citizens, who form the overwhelming majority of the Negro population, must be informed of this plot. Once they are alert to the danger, we may all sleep a little more securely.

Danger lurks everywhere! A new crisis is developing for Guyana. If Chedd Jagan is elected to power in the next election, the communists will have established a base in South America without firing a shot. An intensive, educational campaign to inform the Indian people of Guyana of the true nature of communism is urgently needed. Dr. Sluis is planning to initiate such a campaign. Again your help is imperative.

The temptation to relax is always with us. This temptation is like the urge to sleep which a man experiences when he is lost in the snow. Yielding to it is the forerunner to certain death.

The love of freedom pulsates in every human breast. If we can harness this love of freedom to on awareness of the devices of tyranny, a mighty and unconquerable force for good will be created. This is the path to peace and freedom.

Yours very sincerely,
