METHOD IN THEIR MADNESS

Dear Friend:

Negro citizens are the major victims of the racial riots sweeping the cities. They are the ones who lose their homes and the stores where they buy the necessities of life. Most of those killed or imprisoned are Negroes. This is the most obvious fact of any riot.

This fact has led many to assume that the riots are irrational acts of suicidal frenzy, born of frustration and despair, and committed by desperate people in the grip of uncontrollable rage. In what other way can this senseless self—destruction be explained?

While many participants in the riot have no other motive than blind hatred and lust for loot, this is not true of the conspirators who plan, promote, and maintain the riots. They have a sinister purpose. For them the riots are deliberately designed to terrorize the majority of Negro citizens and to convince them that the law cannot protect them from the groups of violent and criminal extremists so they had better pay up and keep their mouths shut.

Guerrilla Warfare

As Stokely Carmichael stated explicitly at the OLAS conference in Havana, Cuba, their purpose is to conduct guerrilla warfare against the Government of the United States. Guerrilla warfare requires sanctuaries in which the guerrillas can operate safely. The people in these sanctuaries must provide financial support, food, and shelter, and they must be unwilling to betray the guerrillas to the authorities. Using the metaphor of Mao Tse-tung, “The guerrillas are the fish, and the people among whom they move are the sea.”

The guerrilla forces are made up of the criminals, the fanatical black racialists, the Black Muslims, and the communists. The communists seek the positions of leadership.

The coming months and years will be crucial in this battle. There is no doubt that the majority of the Negroes are law abiding citizens who detest violence and who want security in their homes and for their families. If this security is denied to them, they have no choice but to come to terms with the forces of violence in their midst.

This struggle is continuing 24 hours a day in every Negro area even where there is no sign of rioting. There are no communities in the nation which need and desire adequate police protection more than the Negro communities in the ghettos. The future of this country may well be determined by whether this police protection can be provided.

Why Improved Conditions Do Not Prevent Riots!

This explains why cities where the conditions of the Negroes are superior have experienced the most serious riots. Those who have accepted the Marxist diagnosis that the riots are caused by economic deprivation and social injustice are bewildered by the outbreaks in Los Angeles and Detroit. This includes the majority of civil rights workers, social workers, and politicians. Now, another city has been added to 1he list of those cities where a riot should not have taken place, but nevertheless one has occurred. This city is New Haven, Connecticut. An editorial in the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, Wednesday, August 23, discusses the bewildering situation:

“The one city of the nation which had every reason to believe it would not be hit by mass racial rioting is New Haven. Over the last few years t had become known as the very model of effective urban renewal and antipoverty efforts. Yet it erupted in the familiar pattern of looting, burning and mob defiance of authority. More than 200 were arrested.

“Two years before the Federal Government began its drive against poverty, this Connecticut city of 145,000 residents had its own antipoverty program underway. Financed by a $2.5 million grant from the Ford Foundation, its pioneer efforts to improve the lot of some 30,000 nonwhites established operational patterns subsequently adopted by Washington for countrywide use.

“Simultaneously the city was wiping out its worst slums and rebuilding its downtown shopping and business center. Private interests contributed $250 million. Another $60 million came from state and local funds. The Federal Government gave $120 million —- the largest per capita urban renewal grant in the country, amounting to about $800 for every man, woman and child in the city.

“In the aftermath of the two nights of rioting, Mayor Richard Lee expressed bewilderment that the widely heralded work of himself and other community leaders had not resulted in social stability. ‘I was sure that nothing like this could happen here,’ he said. ‘It lust doesn’t make sense.’

“Until the mystery of why the ‘model city’ of New Haven exploded is solved in all its ramifications, there can be no effective solution for the problem of America’s underprivileged racial minorities.

“Obviously the problem will not be solved solely by the expenditure of vast sums of money to wipe out slums and provide job opportunities.”

When we understand the organized conspiracy that lies behind these riots, there is rio mystery in the fact that the cities where conditions are the best are the ones where the riots are worst. Programs to promote peace and well-being simply must not be allowed to succeed. Any city that is making a genuine effort to improve employment opportunities, housing, education, and health becomes Cl special target of the conspirators and special efforts are made to provoke trouble.

A great wave of pessimism is sweeping over large segments of the intellectual community. Those who only a few years ago ridiculed the existence of any internal danger, are now plunged in the abyss of despair and say that America is on the point of self-destruction. Once they decide that the situation is hopeless, they are absolved from the responsibility of positive action.

The Real Danger

We have never underestimated the danger and have pointed out time and again during the past 10 years that the communist objective was the demoralization of the United States, not its conversion to communism. The formula for communist conquest is: “External encirclement, plus internal demoralization, leads to progressive surrender.” Whether the demoralization is brought about by communists or by forces unrelated to communism is quite immaterial. A black nationalist fighting to produce anarchy is lust as effective for the communist purpose as the most dedicated communist. The magnitude of the internal communist danger must therefore be measured by the magnitude of the forces of demoralization rather than by the numerical strength of the communists.

We take little pleasure in saying, “I told you so.” Our constant quest is to discover ways by which we can thwart the objectives of the communist conspiracy and advance the borders of freedom. We believe we have discovered one way with tremendous potentials for good.

The leaders of the Negro community must be informed of the true nature of communism and of the communist plot to exploit the grievances of the Negro people. The ministers of the Negro churches constitute a most important section of the Negro leadership. This is recognized by the communists. The August edition of “Political Affairs” contains an article by Paul Robeson entitled “The Power of Negro Action.” He states:

“The central role that was played in Montgomery by the churches and their pastors highlights the fact that the Negro church which has played such a notable part in our history, is still the strongest base of our power of organization.” (Page 38)

Our plan is to place two books in the hands of every Negro minister in the United States. The first book is “You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists)” written by Dr. Fred Schwarz. This is an explanation of the true nature, methods and objectives of communism in language that is easily understood. Ex—Congressman Walter Judd recently stated that he has learned this book by heart.

The second book is the “Road to Revolution” by Phillip Abbott Luce. Phillip Abbott Luce was at the heart of the communist conspiracy as a member of the Progressive Labor Party, the Peking-orientated Communist Party, while it was planning to exploit the Negroes for communist guerrilla warfare in the U.S.A. The book is well written and thoroughly documented.

We need $1O,OOO to translate this idea into a program. Will you send us your contribution? It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.

AN ANTI-COMMUNIST INTERNATIONAL

A meeting of a Communist International was held in Havana, Cuba, during the first week of August. It was called the Latin America Solidarity Conference (OLAS), and its purpose was to coordinate plans to create a number of “Vietnams” to harass and exhaust the United States. One of these “Vietnams” presented was racial guerrilla warfare within the United States. Stokely Carmichael, former chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNICK) was present and was treated as an honored guest by Fidel Castro.

An Anti-Communist International has been formed to coordinate plans to fight communism throughout the world. It is called “The World Anti-Communist League,” and its first conference will be held in Taipoi, Formosa, from September 25-29.

Rev. James Colbert, Chairman of the Board, will represent the Crusade at this conference as an observer.

It is our prayer and hope that this conference will signify a real advance in the worldwide struggle against communism.

DEMORALIZATION

“She that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.” I Timothy 5:6

The quest for pleasure is an old and futile quest. Happiness is a by—product of meaningful work and significant service. Unhappiness is the companion of those who seek the satisfaction of the senses as the goal of life.

There have always been those who made sensory pleasure their life objective. Most of these had sufficient wealth to indulge their appetites. They were known as “playboys.” The unhappiness of the playboy group is shown by the rate of suicide among them.

The hippie cult is the worship of sensory pleasure. It is a by—product of the affluent society in which large numbers of people can live without working.

The press tends to glamorize the hippie cult, but in realty it is disgusting and sordid. The members are essentially pitiful. They are the victims of all the forces they seek to escape.

A significant factor in the rise of the hippies is the availability of drugs which are alleged to bring happiness. The chief of these is LSD or Acid. The end result is a horror of filth, disease, misery, and exploitation. This is illustrated by an article in the communist “National Guardian” of July 1, by Thorne Dreyer. He writes:

“The streets of San Francisco’s Haight—Ashbury are lined with acid—toy salons. Outside, 14-year—old teeny—bopper chicks are raped and turned into methadrene freaks. Kids, dressed like Indians, beg a for their dinners. Around their necks are crucifixes and other religious paraphernalia. They chant the Hare Krishna.

“The word the commercializes of Hip are pushing is Love.

“There is a basic concept that needs to be dealt with here. That is the bald proposition that LSD is the Revolution. That psychedelic drugs, of and by themselves, produce such changes in the individual that, when taken on a mass scale, all our institutions will crumble and new and more loving structures will arise out of the ruins.

“Sounds great, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening. The merchants on Haight St. reflect primitive capitalism at its worst. For months they have promoted a religious pilgrimage to Mecca. And they have succeeded. As many as 200,000 kids are expected for the summer. Yet the merchants seem blind to the conditions they are bringing the kids into. The Flower Children come streaming into the Haight, wide-eyed and expectant, and suddenly find themselves broke, hungry and with bad cases of VD.

“But the merchants in their religious fervor, close their minds to the genuine misery around them. Their answer to all the problems of the world is, ‘Take acid, things’Il be cool.

Have you been raped?’ they say. ‘Take acid and everything’ll be groovy.

“‘Are you ill? Take acid and find inner health.

‘Are you cold, sleeping in doorways at night? Take acid and discover your own inner warmth. ‘Are you hungry? Take acid and transcend these mundane needs.
“‘You can’t afford acid? Pardon me, I think I hear somebody calling me.’

What is needed in the United States is an old—fashioned religious revival to restore meaning to life and death.
GUYANA REVISITED

By Dr. Joost Sluis

My wife Lois and I revisited Guyana in July. We received a warm welcome from many friends and co-workers with whom we have been associated during the past six years.

Until May 26, 1966, the present sovereign nation of Guyana was known as British Guiana. On that date it ceased to be a British Colony and became an independent state. It is a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations and of the United Nations.

The birth of Guyana as a sovereign nation was an occasion for rejoicing rather than lamentation because the plans of the communists to be the government when independence was granted had been defeated. We had played our part in this defeat by conducting an educational program to expose the true nature, methods, and objectives of communism to the Gulanese people. This was acknowledged by the U. S. Representative to the Organization of American States, the late Ambassador de Lesseps S. Morrison, when he stated, “Dr. Fred Schwarz’s Christian Anti—Communism Crusade made a contribution to the downfall of communism in British Guiana.”

Our ability to make this visit to British Guiana was a tribute to the defeat of the communist plan. In 1961 the leader of the People’s Progressive Party, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, became Prime Minister of

British Guiana. Dr. Jagan is an East Indian by birth and a communist by choice. Under his leadership, the government of British Guiana classified both Dr. Schwarz and me as prohibited immigrants. This favor was granted because of the effectiveness of our program of education on the true nature of communism. For several months in 1961 we educated on communism by showing films in the villages, conducting public rallies, distributing thousands of copies of “You Can Trust the Communists (to be Communists);’ leaflets and comic books.

The ban was lifted in May, 1965, following the defeat of the Jagan forces in another election. This election was the first one held under the system of proportional representation, and it brought Forbes Burnham, a Negro, into power. The People’s Progressive Party, led by Jagan, received 45 per cent of the vote. The communists are now waiting patiently and hopefully for the next election when they are confident they will receive 50 per cent of the vote, and communism will rule without restraint. The frightening possibility is that they may be right because the forces of Indian nationalism are working for them through an expanding Indian birth rote. The future is ominous and the time to take preventive action is now.

A review of the facts that make Guyana so important is in order. These facts may be considered under the following headings: 1) Geographic Location, 2) Racial Imbalance, 3) Communist Leadership of the Indian Population.

Geographic Location

Guyana lies on the northeast coast of South America and shares common borders with Venezuela on ‘?‘ the west, Brazil to the south, and Surinam or Dutch Guiana to the east. Cuba lies a few hundred miles to the north. If communism rules in Guyana, it becomes a base for the supply of guerrilla forces and military weapons for Venezuela and Brazil. It becomes an ideal supply line for guerrilla forces trained in Cuba.
Racial Imbalance

The population of Guyana is now about 650,000. Most of these live on the rice and sugar plantations located in the narrow 270—mile coastal strip. About 50 per cent of the population is East Indian in origin; 32 per cent is African; 6 per cent Aboriginal; while the remaining 12 per cent consists of mixed nationalities of which English and Portuguese are prominent. The East Indian per cent of the population is constantly increasing because of a very high birth rate.

Communist Leadership of the Indian Population

Communism was introduced into this former British colony over 20 years ago when Dr. Cheddi Jagan, now 48 years old, returned as a dentist following his studies at Howard and Northwestern Universities in the United States. He was accompanied by his wife, the former Janet Rosenberg, who was an active member of the Young Communist League in the United States. Jagan was born to an East Indian family on a sugar plantation in British Guiana. They formed the People’s Progressive Party and the East Indian population rallied to the support of Jagan because he is an East Indian. His party was elected to power in 1953. This regime lasted only 6 months before the British moved in troops and suspended the constitution because of the revolutionary activities of the regime.

Three political parties emerged in British Guiana:

(a) The People’s Progressive Party, led by the Jagans, received the support of most of the East Indian people.
(b) The People’s National Congress, led by Forbes Burnham, the present Prime Minister, received the support of most of those of African origin.
(c) The United Force, led by Peter D’Aguiar, is multiracial and is regarded largely as the party of the businessmen.

When the elections were held in 1964, the People’s Progressive Party received 45 per cent of the vote while the combined vote of the People’s National Congress and the United Force was 55 per cent. These two parties formed a United Front and became the government with Forbes Burnham as Prime Minister and Peter D’Aguiar as treasurer. The People’s Progressive Party became the opposition with 24 of the 53 Assembly seats.

At present the Jagans are keeping up a steady barrage of attacks on the present coalition government and on United States imperialism Recently they made the familiar charge that the government has set up all the machinery required to rig the next elections. They are working hard to apply the lessons learned in the past. They are charging the Negroes with discrimination against the Indians. Every racial incident tends to polarize the population and drive the Indians into the arms of Jagan. The future looks dark as Jagan must be considered to have excellent prospects of winning the next election. If he wins the election, the communists will have taken a giant step forward in their plans to subvert and conquer South America and encircle the United States.

To defeat the communists, at least 10 per cent of the Indians must be persuaded to vote against the communist—led People’s Progressive Party. This is not easy to accomplish as nationalism is such a powerful force. An intensive program of education to expose the hideous nature of communism to the East Indians is imperative. Most of the work must be done by Guyanese nationals. We are supporting a number of workers, and we must provide them with literature and the tools they need such as films, tapes, film projectors, tape recorders, and vehicles with electric generators. This costs money!

I plan to revisit Guyana later this year and need your help to make the educational campaign possible and effective.

WHAT A FAMI LY?

How would you like to have to feed this group of hungry boys every day? These are the boys of the Indian Christian orphanage and the “mother” is Mrs. Devananda Rao. These boys are supported by the Christian Anti— Communism Crusade. You may adopt one of these boys by paying $10 per month to provide food, shelter, clothing, education and Christian training. Many of them are still waiting for foster parents.
“Large oaks from little acorns grow.” In 1956, a young Indian school teacher wrote to me and asked for the help of the Christian Anti—Communism Crusade to carry on Christian and anti—communist work. I visited India, met this young man, Devananda Rao, and his family and was impressed by his devotion to Christ and freedom. I promised to present his needs and ask for support for his program. He formed the Indian Christian Crusade. We helped by supporting Christian workers, providing printing presses, and subsidizing the production of anti—communist literature. When the Raos formed the Indian Christian orphanage, we continued to help. The work has grown and the orphanage now cares for 125 boys. They receive Christian spiritual training as well as food, shelter, clothing and education.
Many prominent government officials and church leaders of Hyderabad and Secunderabad of Andhra State attended the opening.
This is truly Christianity in action! As you look at the pictures on these pages, you may understand a little better why it is so essential to receive your regular support for our work. We need monthly contributors.

STUDENTS AS TEACHERS

Shelton Blythe, Crusade representative in the Memphis, Tennessee area writes: “Here is what keeps one working hard. This is a letter from two lawyers who had read many good books on communism. They were strongly against communism but still did not know what it was. I talked with them for 30— minutes along the lines of your first two lectures in the ‘What is Communism?’ series and left them a copy of your book. Here is their reply:

“Arthur and I would like to thank you for the copies of ‘Communism——the Deceitful Tanny.’(Ed. Note: This is the educational title of the book ‘You Can Trust the Communists—-to be Communists’). It is beyond a doubt the clearest, most concise and effective treatment of a difficult subject that we have ever read.

“I feel that for the first time in my life I have a clear understanding of communism, the doctrine itself, and its goals and methods. I am afraid, too, that I have been one of the self-righteous individuals who, although aware of the inherent dangers of communism and its threat to all free men, have done little to combat it. As a result of this book, however, I now feel that I can become a more worthwhile citizen. I am ready to serve in any capacity.”

Letters like this are a constant source of encouragement and inspiration. A 15—year—old boy attended the Midwest School of Anti—Communism in Detroit. He writes:

“As I told you in Detroit during the school, I phoned St. Charles and began work on organizing study groups. We have one formed with students from our local high school and another group formed from young people at a nearby church. More study groups are organizing. We hope to see much more activity after school begins on September 5.

“I am the Chairman of the St. Charles Chapter of Young Americans for Freedom and this puts me in a unique position to stimulate activity among high school students in this area and to encourage Y.A.F. members to organize study groups.

“Since I hove returned from Detroit, I have spent many hours studying the materials which I obtained at the school.”

A Negro pastor who attended the anti-communism school in Detroit writes:

“Due to the awful riot we had during my stay in Detroit, I lost most of the material that I have gathered at the school. Would you please send me the two books that go with the records so I can go on with my study group? The people are eager to learn about communism.”

Here we see the slogan “Every student a teacher” translated into action.

Our work must go on. The coming months will be filled with creative activity for freedom. We cannot succeed alone. You are needed. It is a privilege to be associated with you in this great cause the advancement of human freedom. I know you will not fail. Love never faileth.

Yours in Christian love,
