MARCUSE TO REMAIN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT SAN DIEGO |
In 1954 the San Diego Union published in its Sunday edition the following essay entitled “The Mechanics of a Communist Mind” by Dr. Fred Schwarz. This article was saved by Mrs. Roy Ledford of San Diego, a great patriot and friend of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade. Recently Mrs. Ledford died and her husband, Dr. Roy Ledford, sent it to me. Although it was written 16 years go, it
is relevant to the circumstances which exist today so I am republishing
it in the original form. |

| “The San Diego Union Feb. 28, 1954 “The Mechanics of a Communist’s Mind “Why Do Educated and Wealthy Men Succumb To A Despotic Philosophy? “Communism paints itself as a movement of the poor and downtrodden. Yet its leaders and some of its more spectacular members have been well educated, often men of wealth. Here a student of the Communist mind offers an explanation why such persons fall for the Communist line. “Editor’s Note: Dr. Fred Schwarz, 41-year-old Australian doctor and lay preacher, has issued an open challenge to debate with any Communist or fellow traveler on any platform, anywhere, anytime. Dr. Schwarz attacks communism by exposing the basic ideas and beliefs in communism and by explaining the deception of its published aims. “By Dr. Fred Schwarz Special to The San Diego Union “Communism is a movement originated and directed by educated and sometimes wealthy men. “The notion that a Communist is a shabby, uneducated fanatic given to soap-box oratory on street corners is false. While this character may play a part in communism’s lower echelons, he has never been the central figure in its conspiracy. Communism is not a movement of the working class. It is a movement of educated atheists to exploit the working class—and other groups—to bring themselves to power. “The virus of communism usually infects during the student years. “Karl Marx conceived the basic philosophic and economic ideas from which he built communism during his own student years. He met another students, Frederick Engels, son of a wealthy international manufacturing family and they began a lifelong association of writing, organization and conspiracy out of which communism was born. “Nicolai Lenin, as the student Vladimir Ilyich, renounced the ideas of the social revolutionaries of Russia, embraces Marxism and went on to establish bolshevism, fascism and political communism, and finally to conquer Russia and lay the groundwork for conquest of the whole world. “Joseph Stalin, as the young theological student Josef Vissarionovich Djugasvili, enrolled at Tiflis Theological Seminary of the Russian Orthodox Church, joined the ranks of the Marxists, identified himself with the bolshevists of Lenin and went on to become absolute master of one-third of the earth and draw the detailed blueprint for the conquest of the remainder. “The names of the American Communists and ex-Communists daily becoming more familiar—Alger Hiss, Harry Dexter White, Wittaker Chambers—were all wooed and won as students of American colleges of the highest academic caliber and tradition. “The Chinese Communist leader, Mao Tse-tung and his Indochinese counterpart, Ho Chi-mihn, were recruited during their student years. Throughout the world today the primary assault of the Communists is upon the student mind. “Lenin conceived the idea and structure of the Communist Party. Young intellectuals were organized into a disciplined, controlled and efficient unity to act as conspirators and organizers of the masses, to bring the party to power. The fiction was established that communism was a spontaneous mass movement of the poor and oppressed struggling to improve their lot. It assumed the guise of a legitimate political party and deceived many. “The fruit of this deception remains in the attitude of many educated persons who insist upon seeing communism as a political and economic movement originating in underprivilege and exploitation, ignoring its center—a magnificently organized, treasonable conspiracy dedicated to world conquest by deceit, violence and destruction of all opposition. “How are these intelligent students induced to become Communists in the first place. “The attraction of communism for the rich, the educated and religious presents little difficulty when we see the vision that communism presents to these people. This vision is the re-creation, redemption and perfection of the entire human race. It promises to people the earth with a quality of character, personality, culture and intellect never known historically. “There is something in the human heart that responds to a program for redemption and re-creation of mankind. This is a portion of every great religious movement. “Communism presents a vision that it will not waste its energy in the shallows of individuals but that it will assault basic causes, wiping out misery itself for all time. “Not very long ago, it was commonplace to hear the remark: ‘Communism is all very well in theory but it won’t work because of the weakness of human nature.’ Those guilty of making this statement reveal an ignorance as profound as it is dangerous. “Communism is not good in theory, and no Communist ever proposed to work communism with present human nature. They agree that human personality, as at present constituted, is degenerate and socially diseased, and that before the economic system of communism can come to pass, human character and personality must be re-created. “‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’ Men need something higher than themselves for which to strive, a reason for living and a cause for dying. Wealthy and educated idealists have found this reason and cause not in the field of orthodox religion but in the 20th century religion of communism. “At this point someone usually interjects ‘You are presenting communism as something good. It has a wonderful goal in tune with the goal of Christianity. It must have many desirable features.’ “There is no form of shallow thinking more dangerous than to identify a movement by its goal rather than its methods. Every charlatan, demagogue and confidence man in history has had a ‘good’ goal. No swindler would make enough to buy chili and beans if he did not have a good goal with which to lure his victims. “The question therefore naturally arises as to the mans by which the Communists propose to perfect the human race. They are in no sense reluctant to answer this question. They reply with one word—science. “‘We are scientists in the field of human nature’ they say. “Karl Marx achieved great prestige because, in an age when science was remaking the material world, he claimed to have discovered the scientific formula for remaking man. “The most widely distributed of all Communist texts is ‘Socialism, Utopian and Scientific’ by Frederick Engels. It has been translated into more languages than the Communist Manifesto itself. Since the achievements of science in the realm of the material universe, agriculture and animal husbandry are so outstanding this naturally provokes interest and merits intelligent consideration. “Science demands obedience to scientific laws. Let us take the analogy of steel production. It cannot be made from good intentions, industry and brotherly love, excellent as these may be in themselves. The raw materials, coal and iron, must be secured. They must be associated together in the correct conditions of temperature and humidity and an inescapable process must be carried out before the desired steel is obtained. No furnace—no steel. “The remaking of human nature to the Communist is a scientific process with a furnace stage. The true Communist does not shrink from this. Whenever any of the horrors in the countries under Communist control are shown him—slavery, slander and multiplies murder—he justifies them as the furnace phase from which the beautiful end-product will ultimately emerge. “Communism proceeds to enunciate its three fundamental scientific laws. These are:
“The Communists are proudly unashamedly atheistic in theory and in practice. Karl Marx was an atheist before he was a Communist and from the fibre of his atheism he wove the philosophy and economic doctrines of communism. “His greatest disciple, Lenin, begins his text book on religion with these words: ‘Atheism is a fundamental portion of Marxism of the theory and practice of scientific socialism.’ The banner is raised with the slogan ‘There is no God.’ “Once the existence of God is denied those moralities and values that spring from God are automatically discarded. The Ten Commandments are no longer authoritative. There are no absolutes such as right and wrong, truth and error. Mankind is left on the playing fields of the universe without umpire or referee, without even a book of rules. The winning side may make up the rules as they proceed.
“What is man? Whence has he come and whither does he go? Why is he here? What significance has his life and death, his love and hate, his thoughts and deeds? Communism has its own answer to all these questions. “Man is matter in motion and nothing more. He is a material machine. Within this machine, the stomach secretes gastric juices, the liver secretes bile, the brain secretes thought and emotion. By physical means the secretion of the stomach and the output of the liver can be varied. By physical means, the secretions of the brain which manifest themselves in thought, memory and personality can be changed. This is the basis of the Communist technique of brainwashing. “Three people who most influenced Karl Marx were Hegel who taught him the dialectic, Fuerbach who taught him materialism, and Darwin who taught him evolution. The Communists continue to be fanatical Darwinists. This is mandatory for every member. Man is the product of materialist evolutionary force. “Since there is no God he is obviously not created in the image of God. He is an integral portion of the animal kingdom, the species ‘homo sapiens’. He has no soul, no spirit, no significant individual value and no continuity of existence. Individual human life may be blotted out with the casual indifference reserved for any animal. Logically they carry this belief to its conclusion. They are as contemptuous of the lives of their own as of their opponents. They cannot understand the value Biblical religion places upon individual human life. “The Communists see themselves as the selected instruments of destiny to perfect the human species through the proven scientific processes of animal husbandry. “In support of this I quote William Z. Foster, chairman of the American Communist Party. He recently wrote a book, ‘The Twilight of World Capitalism.’ The culminating chapter has the resounding title, ‘The Advent of Socialist Man.’ “Here are some of his words: “ ‘But the biggest of all tasks to improve the physical well being of humanity and thereby the broadening of the base for its freedom, is to improve the human species itself in an evolutionary sense. The law of natural selection, which built the marvelous complexities of plant and animal species, no longer can work spontaneously. Now the evolution of the human species must be done artificially, by the conscious action of man himself.’ “This statement is an official death sentence for vast sections of the American people should communism ever triumph in this country.
“Human beings are material animals yet they have minds, characters, personalities, social relationships and religious beliefs. Whence are these derived and what are their significance? The unique discovery of Karl Marx was that all these things are derived from the class of economic origin. “The name given to this doctrine is ‘Economic Determinism.’ It teaches that the thoughts of our minds, our motivations, our religious faith, the entire personality is simply the imprint of the prevailing mode of production. In the Communist manifesto he and Engels discuss parental relationship and the conclusion is reached that mother love itself is a product of the economic system knows as ‘capitalism,’ and that when capitalism is destroyed, mother love will cease to be and the mothers of the future will be liberated from the bondage in which they are sealed through the love they bear to their own children. “They discuss the origin of such concepts as liberty, justice, equality and morality. The conclusion is reached that these are merely the reflections in consciousness of an environment of class struggle and that with the abolition of class struggle the ideas will atrophy from the minds of men and the very words will disappear and no longer be found in the language. “The grim truth is that these three fundamental Communist doctrines are either taught or inferred in all the major secular educational establishments of the free world. The Communists merely carry them to their logical conclusion. We preach we are animals; the Communists treat us like animals. Based on these three laws, the scientific program to redeem mankind goes into operation. The Communists agree with the Christians that present human nature is depraved. Where they disagree is with regard to the cause of this depravity. They contend that all human sin is the consequence of the vicious economic environment of capitalism and that a scientific program to eliminate sin must proceed by the following steps: 1. Revolutionary destruction by violence and bloodshed of the economic system known as capitalism. Specifically this involves the military destruction of the state which administers the capitalist system. 2. Establishment of absolute Communist control under the label ‘dictatorship of the proletariat.’ 3. Liquidation of those classes of society who by reason of their location in the capitalist system have the disease of though and character in the most pronounced form. 4. Re-education of those whose disease is not so deep-seated and contagious in an atmosphere of pure labor divorced from profit. These are the slave labor camps. 5. Rise of the new generation in the new environment with characters uninfluenced by the diseased virus of capitalism. 6. As the perfection of human personality advances, the control of the Communist Party will diminish and the ‘dictatorship of the proletariat’ will wither away. 7. Emergence of perfect personality leading to the creation of a perfect society known as ‘communism’. At this point, to quote the words of Engels, ‘pre-history will cease and history will begin.’ “To the Communists anything that forwards this program is good, beautiful and true. It is seen that an essential element is the liquidation, or scientific murder, of whole classes of people. The mind rebels in horror from this but the Communist has a ready answer. He says ‘Nature has been killing people by the multiplied millions for million of years – killing them by hunger, by pestilence, earthquake, old age, and war. If we hesitate to do that, which is scientifically necessary to fulfill our destiny and recreate mankind, how unworthy of the trust history has imposed upon us we would be.’ “Joseph Stalin was asked by Lady Astor, ‘How long to you intend to keep on killing people?’ He replied, ‘Just as long as is necessary.’ “Lenin wrote to Maxim Gorkey, ‘What does it matter if three quarters of the world perish, provided the remaining quarter is Communist.’ “William Z. Foster envisages the artificial evolution of the human species. “What does this involve for the American people? “This country is the headquarters of world capitalism. Therefore, to the Communist, the character and thought life of the American people is more diseased than that of other nations. Consequently more people will need to be exterminated in this scientific program. Many Communist leaders conservatively consider that the percentage of the American citizenry requiring liquidation will be about one-third. This means planned scientific murder of between 50 and 60 million Americans. “A holocaust of unlimited horror for men, women and children of this great country is looming at the present moment. That the motivation of the massacre is to be scientific necessity is cold comfort indeed. “A program to defeat Communism is the urgent necessity of the hour. This program will not be simple, easily conceived or quickly executed. It will involve every aspect of human organization. It must include legislative, economic, social, political, propagandist and military measures. “There must be an informed public opinion as to the nature of communism and its malignant essence. In the last analysis with the American system of Governmental legislative and administrative policies are founded in an enlightened public will. The recurrent visit to the ballot box assures this. Ignorance is communism’s greatest asset.” MARCUSE TO REMAIN AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT SAN DIEGO Many citizens of San Diego were disappointed when they learned that the University of California at San Diego is to continue to provide him with a sanctuary for subversion. This sad news was conveyed to them by the following article in the San Diego Union: “Marcuse to Serve at UCSD Again “Returning Without Pay As Graduate Student Advisor; May Also Lecture “July 17, 1970 “Controversial Marxist philosopher Herbert Marcuse, 72, will return to UCSD in the fall as an unsalaried graduate student adviser, it was announced yesterday. “Marcuse, whose contract expired July 1, will have supervision over eight graduate students working toward doctorates in the philosophy department, among whom is expected to be Angela Davis. “It is possible, philosophy department chairman Dr. Avrum Stroll said yesterday, that Marcuse also could be utilized as a guest lecturer. “But, Stroll emphasized, ‘there are no plans at the present time to use him in that capacity. This is all very hypothetical.’ “To Retain Vote “Stroll said Marcuse will have an office on campus, but will not have a title. Stroll said it is his understanding that Marcuse will retain his seat as a voting member of UCSD’s Faculty Senate. “Marcuse and his wife are now vacationing in Europe. ‘When he returns,’ said Stroll, ‘we’ll talk to him and talk to the instructors and see if something mutally agreeable can be worked out under guest lecturer rules.’ “Stroll said UCSD Chancellor William J. McGill knew of the arrangement beforehand and ‘voiced no objections.’ “Stroll said Marcuse agreed to serve without salary because ‘he’s very concerned about seeing that continuity is not interrupted’ in the thesis work of the graduate students. “No Official Position “The plan to retain Marcuse, said Stroll, was worked out with the administration and with the graduate council, which is an organization of faculty and administrators. “Stroll emphasized that Marcuse ‘has no official position here anymore. His contract has been terminated.’ He called the new agreement ‘an informal arrangement.’ “The department chairman said he had not discussed with McGill the possibility that Marcuse could be used as a guest lecturer. “Under university rules, a guest lecturer may be used once during a quarter with no obligation on the part of the department chairman to make a report to the chancellor and the board of regents. “Could Be Paid “If Marcuse were to be used as a guest lecturer, said Stroll, it could be both on the graduate and undergraduate level. He said he could lecture without a fee or he could be paid from department funds. “A guest lecturer cannot give grades and is not allowed to give the majority of lectures in any given course. But, said Stroll, ‘There is nothing to prevent him from being present at every session.’ “The arrangement whereby Marcuse will occupy an office and will advise graduate students is not an unusual one for retired professors at the university, a spokesman said. “McGill said yesterday in San Francisco that he would not approve of an arrangement whereby Marcuse would be a paid lecturer. “‘Expenditure of departmental funds has to be converted to vouchers and those vouchers would have to go through the administration office,’ said McGill. ‘They would not be approved.’ “‘His appointment is terminated,’ said McGill. ‘There is no subterfuge.’ The following editorial published in the San Diego Union, July 18, 1970, expresses the point of view of many San Diegans: “Dr. Herbert Marcuse has been indoctrinating youth at the University of California at San Diego for the last five years by lecturing in philosophy classes and by his leadership of militants on the Quad. “He is a Marxist who favors rule by an ‘elite’ and says so. He says also that the United States of America is decadent; that it ought to be changed by violence if need be; that Cuba comes the closest to being an ideal state in this world. He does not believe those who hold views contrary to his own should be allowed to speak. He is a revolutionary and a mediocre philosopher. “Nevertheless, the University waived its rules regarding age to bring him here five years ago. It stretched its rules again to retain him for an additional year. “Now, despite the wishes of the people and the promises of the University officials, Marcuse will remain on campus as a guest lecturer, paid by public funds. He will retain his seat as a voting member of the UCSD Academic Senate. He will have an office, secretarial services and library privileges all tax-supported. “It will be done under an arrangement in which Marcuse is utilized as a guest lecturer—so that ‘continuity is not interrupted’ in the work of eight graduate students. The eight graduate students could remain at UCSD indefinitely, and so could Marcuse. “At best the ‘arrangement’ by the acting head of the UCSD philosophy department is a serious breach of faith that can only continue to drive a wedge between the University and the people it is designed to serve.” HOW THE COMMUNISTS VIEW EVANGELIST BILLY GRAHAM From: Pravda (Truth), Moscow, July 8, 1969. “‘Soul Saver’ or How Reverend Billy Graham Hoodwinks His Gullible Flock” “Everytime I see and hear the ‘soul saver,’ American evangelist Billy Graham, I am reminded of a scene at a Chicago slaughterhouse, particularly the ‘work’ of a chestnut steer trained to lure into the slaughterhouse cattle driven to slaughter. “. . .Fattened cattle await their fate in the pens. Cows bellow piteously and sink beneath the blows of the drivers. At this point, the judas-steer is driven in. “He is quiet. As if showing that there is nothing dangerous ahead, the chestnut steer skillfully moves toward a vast metal hall, luring along the trembling animals. But as soon as a dozen or so cows enter the structure, behind them a metal curtain lowers. And the end. The animals are stunned, then poisoned with gas so that in a couple of minute or so their hides are quietly flayed off. “Preacher-evangelist William Franklin Graham, in the ads—Billy Graham, apparently has never been in a slaughterhouse. And the people whom he is hoodwinking have been prepared for something different. Those hoodwinked by Billy do not physically die. On the contrary, in the name of the Almighty he ‘saves’ their souls. But when it comes down to essentials, Graham’s ways differ little from the duties of a Chicago judas-steer. “Luring the ‘deceived little sheep’ to the ‘gates of paradise,’ the evangelist first befogs the minds of his victims. This is the aim of ‘the crusades’ the evangelist has been conducting in the United States and overseas for a couple of decades now, promising heaven to anyone who takes Jesus Christ as his savior. “Recently the evangelist demonstrated his talents in sinful New York. Here in an enormous new building, Madison Square Garden, his ten-days tours going by the title ‘New York Crusade’ were conducted. Daily all kinds of people from city and countryside crowded into the hall. Cripples and the deprived came in hope of miraculous help. Those who were growing rich by tricky dealing came calculating on the remission of their sins. But most came out of curiosity, out of idleness. Admission was in fact free. “‘I have a son, 21 years old,’ said an elderly American man. ‘He’s demonstrating, he insists God is dead. I’m praying for him.’ “‘Yes, I have everything the world could give anybody,’ said the divorced wife of wealthy Cornelious Vanderbilt Whitney, explaining her presence in the hall and showing off eight costly rings on her fingers. ‘But I turned to God because he called me to his service. . .’ “Outwardly, Billy’s sermons are magnificent spectacles in which a hymn-singing choir, soloist-musicians, and famous guests take part. Spectacles calculated for emotional effect. This is a single-minded operation in the psychological and political molding of people into a frame of mind desirable to the ruling class, on a scale that is gigantic even for America. “Everyday from a platform decorated with artificial flowers, as if emphasizing the falseness of the presentation, preacher Graham appeals to his audience in the unnatural voice of a backwoods tragedian: “ ‘Repent. . . Christ is alive. . . Let him become part of your life.’ “And at the conclusion, he invites ‘those turning to God’ to gather at the platform for further conversations. The misled are quite numerous and they are given over forthwith to the care of Billy’s volunteers. “The machinery of Graham’s ‘Evangelistic Association’ was set up a good many years ago. ‘Decision-makers’ are led into a special room. A specially trained ‘counselor’ sits alongside each arrival. He finds out the reason for the ‘decision to turn to God,’ records the sins, and fills out a card with the person’s address. Each ‘counselor’ is obliged for the nest 48 hours, until ‘faith has taken root’ to personally be in contact with his charge and to report about the start of a nine-week Bible course. In addition, on the spot everyone is given a brochure with a paraphrased version of St. John’s Gospel, postcards to learn hymns from and also a crossword on a religious subject to test their knowledge on. Answers are to be sent to Graham’s headquarters in Minneapolis. In a word, everything is on a grand scale. “Bill’s clergy pay extra attention to the problem of recruiting youth demonstrating social and racial inequality and rejecting the morality of the ruling class. Special bait has been worked up. A coffeehouse decked out with multi-colored flashing lights has been organized a block from Madison Square Garden. There, soft drinks are passed out free and every evening teenagers can dance to the accompaniment of specially invited musicians playing ‘Christian’ rock and roll. In intermissions between dances, evangelists carry out their crusading. “It takes a lot of money to carry off this kind of operation. And the money pours in, from sources that show whose interests evangelist Graham works for. “According to estimates made by Newsweek magazine, Billy’s ten-day tours in New York total up in costs to a nice round figure—about one million dollars. Those financing the preacher feel their capital investment well spent. In any case, when in the office of one of the richest insurance companies, Mutual Life, the decision was taken to invite Billy, the group of business figures had no doubts. George Champion, former chairman of the Board of Chase Manhattan Bank, Elmer Engstrom, president of the Radi Corporation of America, multimillionaire Maxley Jarman, and others joined up with the initiators of the ‘crusade’ long before it was held. “Publicly, the money bags insist with one voice that they all ‘really believe in the power of prayer,’ and are guided by one and only one concern—to lift New York out of ‘spiritual poverty.’ But beneath the showcase piety of the businessmen, their special interests are easily spotted. The press has noted that millionaires back only the kind of preaching that suits them. Billy does the trick. The preachers is cleverly able to detour his listeners from thoughts about problems here on earth and battling for a better lot in this world. “And Billy does what they want from him. Making fools out of people here, he rushes off to another part of the country in order to catch new souls on his hook. Devoid of high ideals, the broken-spirited ruling class clings to Graham as one of their last hopes.” N. Kurdyumov, Regular Pravda Correspondent, New York. (Translated from the Russian by Angelo Cosmides) “The Washington D. C. Antisubversive Seminar was beyond my expectations. I was truly fascinated and enthralled by the films and speakers presented. After the seminar, I felt inspired and excited by all that I had learned and enjoyed there. I am many times more knowledgeable on the subjects covered than I was before. I think you for allowing me to take part in such a rewarding and enjoyable experience.” Winston C. Cavin, Durham, North Carolina The name, Weatherman is constantly in the news. It refers to the official faction of SDS which was elected to leadership at the 1969 SDS convention. The name is taken from a song by Bob Dylan entitled “You Don’t Need a Weatherman to Show Which Way the Wind Blows.” Apparently this name was selected to show their emphasis is on action rather than theory. They claim to be communists following the teaching of Mao Tse-tung but they practice anarchist terrorist tactics. The Weatherman group organized the days of rage in Chicago, October 8-11, 1969. Their last public function was the convention held in Flint, Michigan, December 27-30, 1969, where they eulogized Charles Manson and his gang. They have now gone underground operating as urban guerrillas running bomb factories and preparing to conduct operation of sabotage, kidnapping, and assassination. Thirteen leaders of Weatherman have been indicted for conspiracy to bomb buildings and kill occupants in New York, Chicato, Detroit, and Berkeley. Most of them are in hiding. The following article on a statement by the Weatherman is published in the Guardian, June 6, 1970: “Weatherman: ‘We Will Never Go Back’ “The third body found at the site of a town house explosion in New York City last March has been identified as Terry Robbins, 23. The former Weatherman member was named in a statement issued last week in the name of the Weatherman group. “Titled a ‘Declaration of War’ and announcing ‘This is the first communication from the Weatherman underground,’ the statement summed up the tactical strategy and the objectives of the Weatherman faction of SDS, which has now gone underground. “Since ‘. . .black people have been fighting almost alone for years,’ the statement began, ‘we’ve known that our job is to lead white kids to armed revolution. . . We’ve been trying to show how it is possible to overcome the frustration and impotence that comes from trying to reform this system. . . Tens of thousands have learned that protest and marchers don’t do it. Revolutionary violence is the only way. “‘Now we are adapting the classic guerrilla strategy of the Vietcong and the urban guerrilla strategy of the Tupamaros to our own situation here. . . “‘Che taught us that revolutionaries move like fish in the sea. The alienation and contempt that young people have for this country has created the ocean for this revolution. . . The war and racism of this society show that it is too ------- up. We will never live peaceably under this system. This was totally true of those who died in the New York townhouse explosion. . . “‘The 12 Weathermen who were indicted for leading last October’s riots in Chicago have never left the country,’ the statement continued, ‘Terry is dead. . . but the rest of us move freely in and out of every city and youth scene in this country. We’re not in hiding, but we’re invisible. “‘We fight in many ways. Dope is one of our weapons. The laws against marijuana mean that millions of us are outlaws long before we actually split. Guns and grass are united in the youth underground. “‘Freaks are revolutionaries and revolutionaries are freaks. If you want to find us, this is where we are. In every tribe, commune, dormitory, farmhouse, barracks and townhouse where kids are making love, smoking dope and loading guns—fugitives from Amerikan justice are free to go. “‘For Diana Oughton, Ted Gold and Terry Robbins and for all the revolutionaries who are still on the move here, there has been no question for a long time now—we will never go back. “‘Within the next fourteen days we will attack a symbol or institution of American injustice. This is the way we celebrate the example of Eldridge Cleaver and H. Rap Brown and all black revolutionaries who first inspired us by their fight behind enemy lines for the liberation of their people. “‘Never again will they fight alone,’ the statement concluded. It was dated May 21. “A May 29 raid on a New York City apartment resulted in the arrest of two people police said were members of Weatherman—Lee Wood, 26 and Patricia Wood, 23. The Upper West Side apartment was said to have contained numerous arms. The New York raid followed the arrest in San Francisco of Michael Lamm and Robert Stover, also alleged to be members of Weatherman. According to police, they were burglarizing a chemical plant for material to manufacture nitroglycerin.” Page 8. |
